      Abstract:

Although we may design a digital system for any particular function from scratch, connecting registers and functional blocks, using the technique studied in Chapter 8, for reasons of flexibility it is preferable to have an adaptable and easily reprogrammable system, a computer. This chapter provides a summary of the development of computers and their internal organisation.
