Composite hollow–core slab floor with reinforced concrete topping (i.e. CHFT) is relatively new, which can be applied to various long-span structures. However, these systems are typically lightweight and exhibit low damping, posing potential serviceability concerns related to human vibrations. This paper presents a comprehensive vibration test on a 9m-long CHFT system. Natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes of the floor system were obtained through modal tests. The peak acceleration, root–mean–square acceleration, maximum transient vibration value, and perception factor of the floor under heel-drop excitation were obtained through the perceived vibration test and were checked against the available design codes and standards. Sensitivity studies using the finite element method were made to investigate the vibration performance of the CHFT system. Analytical formulas for the fundamental frequency and peak acceleration were derived, which are therefore suggested for practical use. Additionally, an approach for evaluating the vibration serviceability of CHFTs is described.

An algorithm M is described that solves any well-defined problem p as quickly a the fastest algorithm computing a solution to p, save for a factor of 5 and low-order additive terms. M optimally distributes resources between the execution of provably correct p-solving programs and an enumeration of all proofs, including relevant proofs of program correctness and of time bounds on program runtimes. M avoids Blum's speed-up theorem by ignoring programs without correctness proof. M has broader applicability and can be faster than Levin's universal search, the fastest method for inverting functions save for a large multiplicative constant. An extension of Kolmogorov complexity and two novel natural measures of function complexity are used to show the most efficient program computing some function f is also among the shortest programs provably computing f.

In an effort to make modification on the classical Polak–Ribière–Polyak method, Wei et al. suggested an efficient nonlinear conjugate gradient method which possesses the sufficient descent property when the line search fulfills the strong Wolfe conditions (by restricting the line search parameters). Here, we develop a three-term extension of the method which satisfies the sufficient descent condition independent of the line search. Also, under a backtracking Armijo-type line search, we establish global convergence of the method without convexity assumption. Using a scalar approximation of the Hessian of the objective function, we suggest an acceleration scheme that can be used in the iterative line search methods of unconstrained optimization. At last, practical merits of the proposed method are investigated by numerical experiments on a set of CUTEr test functions as well as the well-known image restoration problem. The results show numerical efficiency of the method.

Proximal alternating direction method of multipliers (PADMM) is a classical primal-dual splitting method for solving separable convex optimization problems with linear equality constraints, which have numerous applications in, e.g., signal and image processing, machine learning, and statistics. In this paper, we propose a new variant of PADMM, called PADMC, whose proximal centers are constructed by convex combinations of the iterates. PADMC is able to take advantage of problem structures and preserves the desirable properties of the classical PADMM. We establish iterate convergence as well as ${𝒪}(1/K)$ ergodic and ${𝒪}(1/\sqrt{K})$ nonergodic sublinear convergence rate results measured by function residual and feasibility violation, where $K$ denotes the iteration number. Moreover, we propose two fast variants of PADMC, one achieves faster ${𝒪}(1/K^2)$ ergodic convergence rate when one of the component functions is strongly convex, and the other ensures faster ${𝒪}(1/K)$ nonergodic convergence rate measured by constraint violation. Finally, preliminary numerical results on the LASSO and the elastic-net regularization problems are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods.

It is widely believed that the assumption of homogeneity is a good zeroth order approximation for the expansion of our Universe. We analyze the correction due to subhorizon inhomogeneous gravitational fields. While at early times this contribution (which may act as a negative pressure component) is perturbatively subdominant, we show that the perturbative series is likely to diverge at redshift of order 1, due to the growth of perturbations. So, the homogeneous Friedmann equation cannot be trusted at late times. We suggest that the puzzling observations of a present acceleration of the Universe, may just be due to the unjustified use of the Friedmann equation and not to the presence of a Dark Energy component. This would completely solve the coincidence problem.

In this letter, we consider a model of the universe filled with modified Chaplygin gas and another fluid (with barotropic equation of state) and its role in accelerating phase of the universe. We have assumed that the mixture of these two fluid models is valid from (i) the radiation era to ΛCDM for -1 ≤ γ ≤ 1 and (ii) the radiation era to quintessence model for γ < -1. For these two fluid models, the statefinder parameters describe different phase of the evolution of the universe.

We discuss the effects of non-inertial motion in reactions occurring in laboratory, stars, and elsewhere. It is demonstrated that non-inertial effects due to large accelerations during nuclear collisions might have appreciable effects nuclear and atomic transitions. We also explore the magnitude of the corrections induced by strong gravitational fields on nuclear reactions in massive, compact stars, and the neighborhood of black holes.

Little is known about the physics frontier of strong acceleration; both classical and quantum physics need further development in order to be able to address this newly accessible area of physics. In this lecture we discuss what strong acceleration means, possible experiments using electron-laser collisions, and data available from ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. We review the foundations of the current understanding of charged particle dynamics in presence of critical forces and discuss the radiation reaction inconsistency in electromagnetic theory and the apparent relation with quantum physics and strong field particle production phenomena. The role of the quantum vacuum as an inertial reference frame is emphasized, as well as the absence of such a 'Machian' reference frame in the conventional classical limit of quantum field theory.

The electron vacuum fluctuations measured by do not vanish in an externally applied electric field ℰ. For an exactly constant field, that is for vacuum fluctuations in presence of a constant accelerating force, we show that has a Boson-like structure with spectral state density tanh^-1(E/m) and temperature T_M = eℰ/mπ = a_v/π. Considering the vacuum fluctuations of 'classical' gyromagnetic ratio g = 1 particles we find Fermi-like structure with the same spectral state density at a smaller temperature T₁ = a_v/2π which corresponds to the Unruh temperature of an accelerated observer.

In this work, we study the evolution of a fractal universe composed of Tsallis holographic dark energy (THDE) and a pressureless dark matter that interact with each other through a mutual interaction. We then reconstruct the interaction term of this model by considering the Hubble length as the IR cut-off scale. We also study the behavior of different cosmological parameters during the cosmic evolution from the early matter-dominated era until the late-time acceleration. The present study shows that the universe undergoes a smooth transition from a decelerated to an accelerated phase of expansion in the recent past. Moreover, we also shown the evolution of the normalized Hubble parameter for our model and compared that with the latest cosmic chronometer data. Finally, we test the viability of the model by exploring its stability against small perturbation by using the squared of the sound speed.

In this study, we have discussed the implications of acceleration in quantum mechanics by means of a generalized derivative operator (GDO). A new Schrödinger equation is obtained which depends on the reduced Compton wavelength of the particle. We have discussed its implications in quantum mechanics for different types of potentials mainly the infinite wall potential, the gravitational linear field potential, the Cornell potential and the Coulomb repulsive potential. The corresponding wave functions and discrete energies are modified and differ from the results obtained in the conventional formalism. The major results obtained concerned the large improvement of the ground energy of the electron subject to the gravitational acceleration in addition to Cornell potential and the emergence of quantized electric charge in the theory without including Dirac monopoles or using gauge theories.

We study the energy loss rate (ELR) of the accelerated quark in terms of the holographic models for the two different motions, linear acceleration and uniform rotation. They are examined by two different nonconformal models with confinement. We found in both models that the value of ELR is bounded from below by the string tension of the linear confinement potential between quark and antiquark. The lower bounds of ELR are independent of the types of the motion of the quark. They are determined by the string tension at the worldsheet horizon of the model. These results are obtained when the model has the diagonal background metric. Then we find the common perspective for the lower bounds of ELRs of the two different motions.

It is well known that an accelerated charged particle radiates away energy. However, whether an accelerated neutral composite particle radiates away energy is unclear. We study decoherent Larmor radiation from an accelerated neutral composite object. We find that the neutral object’s long wavelength radiation is highly suppressed because radiation from different charges is canceled out. However, the neutral object radiates high energy or short wavelength radiation without any suppression. In that case, radiation from each particle can be treated independently, and it is called the decoherent radiation. We compare a hydrogen atom’s decoherent Larmor radiation with its gravitational radiation while the atom is in a circular orbit around a star. Gravitational radiation is stronger than the electromagnetic radiation if the orbital radius is larger than some critical radius. Since the decoherent radiation is related to the object’s structure, this implies that the strong equivalence principle which states that gravitational motion does not depend on an object’s constitution has severe limitations.

Aspirations of modern high energy particle physics call for compact and cost efficient lepton and hadron colliders with energy reach and luminosity significantly beyond the modern HEP facilities. Strong interplanar fields in crystals of the order of 10–100 V/Å can effectively guide and collimate high energy particles. Besides continuous focusing crystals plasma, if properly excited, can be used for particle acceleration with exceptionally high gradients $O$(TeV/m). However, the angstrom-scale size of channels in crystals might be too small to accept and accelerate significant number of particles. Carbon-based nano-structures such as carbon-nanotubes (CNTs) and graphenes have a large degree of dimensional flexibility and thermo-mechanical strength and thus could be more suitable for channeling acceleration of high intensity beams. Nano-channels of the synthetic crystals can accept a few orders of magnitude larger phase-space volume of channeled particles with much higher thermal tolerance than natural crystals.

This paper presents conceptual foundations of the CNT acceleration, including underlying theory, practical outline and technical challenges of the proof-of-principle experiment. Also, an analytic description of the plasmon-assisted laser acceleration is detailed with practical acceleration parameters, in particular with specifications of a typical tabletop femtosecond laser system. The maximally achievable acceleration gradients and energy gains within dephasing lengths and CNT lengths are discussed with respect to laser-incident angles and the CNT-filling ratios.

We consider theories of gravity that include many coupled scalar fields with arbitrary couplings, in the geometric framework of wave maps. We examine the possibility of obtaining acceptable cosmological solutions without the inclusion of a potential term to the scalar fields. To illustrate the theory, we study two simple models and compare their solutions to those in General Relativity. We also address the issue of the conditions that must be satisfied by the wave maps for an accelerated phase of the Universe.

Recently, by the end of their second observing run, advanced LIGO and Virgo have detected some binary black hole mergers. In this paper, we show that the acceleration of black holes around each other causes the emergence of two Rindler space–times. The parameters of the black hole in each region change in opposite order to the parameters of the black hole in the other region. Also, the acceleration has a direct relation to the black hole entropies and their observed redshifts.

The interlaminar peel strength of Al/AFRP (Aluminum alloy/Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic) hybrid composite is affected by the adhesive strength between the Al alloy layer and the aramid fiber layer. The study of the tensile strength and the T-peel strength of the Al/AFRP should be accomplished first. Therefore, this study focused on the effect of the resin mixture ratio as the Al/AFRP on the tensile strength and T-peel strength. In conclusions, the resin mixture ratio by equivalence ratio of 〈epoxy resin : curing agent〉 equal to 〈1:1〉 of Al/AFRP-I and the resin mixture ratio by equivalence ratio of 〈epoxy resin : curing agent : accelerator〉 equal to 〈1:1:0.2〉 of Al/AFRP-II showed the highest ultimate tensile strength. After the T-peel test, it is found that the T-peel strength of Al/AFRP-II is approximately 1.5 times higher than that of Al/AFRP-I. Reviewing the characteristics of the tensile and T-peel strengths, the resin mixture ratio 〈1:1:0.2〉 of Al/AFRP-II showed the highest tensile strength and T-peel strength.

Dielectric structures promise to support high field, especially for short wakefield pulses produced by a high charged electron beam traveling in a dielectric tube. To push the gradient higher, we have tested two structures using recent upgraded Argonne wakefield accelerator facility that capable of producing up to 100 nC charge and bunch length of < 13ps (FWHM). Here we report on the experiment results that more than 80 nC beam passes through a 14 GHz dielectric loaded wakefield structure that produced an accelerating field of ~ 45 MV/m. The two structures consist of a cylindrical ceramic tube (cordierite) with a dielectric constant of 5, inner and outer radii of 5 mm and 7.49 mm, respectively, and with length of 102 mm and 23 mm long. We present measurements made with single electron bunches and also with two bunches separated by 1.5 ns. As a next step in these experiments, another structure, with an output coupler, has been designed and is presently being fabricated.

The response of the side shell to non-contact underwater explosion is of major concern in ship design. While extensive research is carried out on air-backed plates, relatively less attention is paid to water-backed plates. Nevertheless, the response of the water-backed plates becomes relevant when the water filled side shells are exposed to an underwater shock loading. Availability of scant information on the experimental results of water-backed plates is the primary motivating factor to make analytical estimates. These estimates are provided in comparison with an air-backed plate for identical attack geometry and target parameters. This work aims to bring out a comparative procedure for the damage assessment between air- and water-backed plates so that the response of the latter can be presented in terms of that of the former.
