Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been known as an autoimmune disease that affects the joint tissues leading to the development of stern inflammatory microenvironments. Patients suffering from RA are often recommended to take disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs known as DMARDs by health-care professionals. But, utilizing DMARDs for a prolonged time has been found to cause toxicity in several organs of the patient including the gastrointestinal tract, skin and kidneys. Along with affecting these organs, prolonged usage of these drugs also leads to immunosuppression that causes varied infections. In recent years, nanomedicine has emerged as one of the most potent therapeutic techniques in treating RA. This is because of its efficacy in localizing medicines precisely in inflamed joints. Therefore, the topic of nanomedicine, which has the potential to be utilized in the delivery of therapeutic drugs specifically to the joints that are damaged and inflammatory, will be the primary focus of this review. This will also contribute to the development of an understanding of nanomedicine, which assists in regulating the progression of the disease RA by emphasizing immune regulation, controlled medication release, and targeted delivery.

Dental diseases in the elderly are usually chronic and often complicated by general illness and medications. An alternate approach to study geriatric dental disease is proposed. Relating oral diseases to systemic functional systems with TCM theory provide a more holistic view of both local and general pathological factors. Cross-referring TCM theory with modern research show evidence that dental diseases are in close association with general condition. Saliva is found to be an importance interface between systemic functions and oral environment. It can serves as an indicator or diagnostic aid for many systemic conditions.

Many clinical problems, in spite of repeated attempts on treatment remain disturbing. The application of complementary treatment is often the result of patients' disappointment and clinicians' enthusiasm to help. Acupuncture is an important component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The concept of acupuncture is based on an assumption of maintaining an internal balance through the stimulation of special points along the meridians. Acupuncture, therefore, enjoys a free utilization as a harmonizing procedure. When modern practitioners start to utilize acupuncture as alternative means of treatment, their scientific medicine background is influencing them to take a specific approach for the treatment of specific pathologies. Unlike acupuncture experts, they ignore the general concept of bringing harmony to physiological imbalance. Once they are convinced they apply the traditional technique to areas of popular concern like obesity, and skin conditions affecting cosmesis, and difficult situation occurring in endocrine and autoimmune diseases like thyrotoxicosis and ulcerative colitis.

This chapter has no intention of making a comprehensive review on the new areas of application of acupuncture, but would attempt to give some discussion on examples of the current popular uses.
