The potential utility of electrospun polystyrene (PS) nanofibers embedded with 2,6-diiodo-8-phenyl-1,7-dimethyl-3,5-di-2-thienylvinyleneBODIPY for the photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes is investigated. A comparison of the singlet oxygen quantum yield of the $\pi$-extended BODIPY dye in solution and in the PS nanofibers demonstrates that its photosensitizer properties are retained when it is embedded in the solid phase. The photocatalytic degradation properties of the PS nanofibers for Methyl Orange and Orange G were determined by using a Thorlabs 625 nm light emitting diode. The rate of photodegradation increases with the Orange G and Methyl Orange concentration and follows pseudo-first order kinetics at pH 6.7.

The results of recent studies on the optical limiting properties of BODIPY dyes at 532 and 1064 nm are described and compared. The optical limiting properties of novel 1,7-dimethyl-3,5-di-4-dihydroxyborylstyryl- and 3,5,7-tristyryl-1-methyl-BODIPY dyes were studied in CH₂Cl₂ and C₆H₆ and polystyrene thin films using the open aperture Z-scan technique at 532 nm with nanosecond laser pulses to provide an example of how the effective nonlinear absorption coefficient, the third order susceptibility, hyperpolarizability and limiting thresholds can be calculated.

The synthesis and characterization of a novel dibrominated 1,3,5-tristyrylBODIPY dye is reported, and its potential utility as a singlet oxygen photosensitizer and optical limiting material is assessed. The main spectral band lies in the therapeutic window, and there is a moderately high singlet oxygen quantum yield making the dye potentially suitable for use in biomedical applications and as an optical limiting dye at 532 nm. The optical limiting parameters are comparable to those reported previously for 3,5-distyrylBODIPYs, which suggests that mixtures of 3,5-distyryl and 1,3,5-tristyryl compounds that are formed in Knoevenagel condensation reactions could be used for this application. Theoretical calculations are used to assess the effect of 1,3,5-tristyryl substitution. A smaller red shift of the main spectral band is observed upon styrylation at the 1-position than is the case with the 3,5-positions due to there being smaller MO coefficients at this position, limiting the utility of this structural modification method for shifting the main BODIPY spectral band further into the therapeutic window.

A 2,6-diiodo-3,5-dithienylvinyleneBODIPY dye was prepared and encapsulated with folate-chitosan capped Pluronic${}^{\circledR }$ F-127 to provide drug delivery systems for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Moderately enhanced singlet oxygen quantum yields were observed for the dye encapsulation complexes in water. The in vitro dark cytotoxicity and photodynamic activity were investigated on the human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) cell line. Minimal dark cytotoxicity was observed for the BODIPY dyes in 5% DMSO and when encapsulated in folate-functionalized chitosan-coated Pluronic${}^{\circledR }$ F-127 micelles, since the cell viability values are consistently greater than 80% over the 0-40 $\mu \mathrm{\text{g}}\cdot {\mathrm{\text{mL}}}^{-1}$ concentration range. Upon irradiation of the samples, significant cytocidal activity was observed for the encapsulation complex of a 2,6-diiodo-8-dimethylaminophenyl-3,5-dithienylvinyleneBODIPY dye with less than 50% viable cells observed at concentrations $\ge 20\mu \mathrm{\text{g}}\cdot {\mathrm{\text{mL}}}^{-1}$.

Mono- and disubstituted 2,6-dibromo-dimethylaminophenylbuta-1,3-dienylBODIPY dyes were successfully prepared, and their in vitro photodynamic activities against MCF-7 breast cancer cells were evaluated with a Thorlabs M660L4 660 nm LED (336 J · cm${}^{-2})$. The IC${}_{50}$ value of the monophenylbuta-1,3-dienylBODIPY was ca. 2.1 $\mu$M, while that of the diphenylbuta-1,3-dienylBODIPY was > 50 $\mu$M. Both dyes exhibited minimal dark toxicity. The results demonstrate that monosubstituted 2,6-dibromo-dimethylaminophenylbuta-1,3-dienylBODIPY dyes merit further in-depth study for use as photosensitizer dyes in photodynamic therapy.

Two pyrrolyl-BODIPY dyes with 3,5-di-$t$-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl group were synthesized through stepwise S${}_{\text{N}}$Ar reactions of 3,5-dibromoBODIPYs, which were used as a fluorescent sensor for basic anions. The intermediate pyrrolyl-BODIPYs 2a–2b were regioselectively synthesized through an efficient S${}_{\text{N}}$Ar reaction between 3,5-dibromoBODIPY 1a and pyrroles. The target pyrrolyl-BODIPYs 3a–3b with a 3,5-di-$t$-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl group at 3-position and a pyrrole substituent at 5-position were obtained through a second S${}_{\text{N}}$Ar reaction between pyrrolyl-BODIPYs 2a–2b and high steric hindrance 2,6-dibutylphenol in 90% and 88% yields, respectively. In contrast, the reaction between pyrrolyl-BODIPYs 2a–2b and phenol gave pyrrolyl-BODIPYs 3c–3d with phenoxy substituent at 3-position. These pyrrolyl-BODIPYs 3a–2d show strong, sharp absorptions (551–604 nm) and emissions (564–634 nm) with high fluorescence quantum yields up to 0.86 in dichloromethane. Importantly, the 3,5-di-$t$-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl group of pyrrolyl-BODIPY 3a showed a turn-off fluorescent response toward fluoride anion.

The ease of functionalization of BODIPY dyes provides scope for preparing pH indicators by introducing suitable functional groups. In this work, two dimethylamino substituted BODIPY dyes 3 and 4 with styryl and phenylbuta-1,3-dienyl groups introduced at the 3,5-positions were synthesized, characterized, and studied for use as pH indicators. Incorporation of the electron-rich vinylene substituents yielded dyes that absorb in the NIR region with emission wavelengths of 796 and 797 nm for 3 and 4, respectively, in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations were performed to study the effect of adding an extra alkene bond in 4 on the photophysical properties. The extra alkene bond in 4 resulted in a 3 nm shift in the main NIR region absorption band, lower molar extinction coefficient values, higher emission wavelength, and a decrease in fluorescence quantum yield in all solvents studied. Upon protonation of the amino groups, a large blue shift is observed in both the absorption and emission wavelengths, along with an increase in the fluorescence quantum yields and longer fluorescence lifetimes. The $p{\mathrm{\text{K}}}_{\mathrm{\text{a}}}$ values for 3 and 4 were estimated to be 2.9 (± 0.05) and 1.2 (± 0.05), respectively.

The photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) activities of seven 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-2,6-dibromoBODIPY dyes with 4-acetamidophenyl (2a), 2-iodophenyl (2b), 3-iodophenyl (2c), 4-iodophenyl (2d), 2-bromophenyl (2e), 5-bromothien-2-yl (2f), and methylphenyl ester (2g) meso-substituents were studied against Staphylococcus aureus through irradiation with a 530 nm Thorlabs M530L3 light emitting diode (LED) (110 mW.cm${}^{-2})$ to identify structure-property relationships related to modifying the meso-substituent. Significant differences are observed in the log${}_{10}$ reduction values obtained with 1 $\mu$M of 2a exhibiting the highest PACT activity with a value of 9.60 after 15 min of photoirradiation. In contrast, log${}_{10}$ reduction values < 1.20 were obtained after 60 min of photoirradiation for iodophenyl dyes 2b-2d. The data demonstrate that the singlet oxygen quantum yield of the dye is not the most important factor determining the PACT activity properties.
