The general Euler-Poisson problem of rigid body motion is investigated. We study the three-dimensional algebraic level surfaces of the first integrals, and their topological bifurcations. The main result of this article is an analytical and qualitatively complete description of the projections of these integral manifolds to the body-fixed space of angular velocities. We classify the possible types of these invariant sets and analyze the dependence of their topology on the parameters of the body and the constants of the first integrals. Particular emphasis is given to the enveloping surfaces of the sets of admissible angular velocities. Their pre-images in the reduced phase space induce a Heegaard splitting which lends itself for a general choice of complete Poincaré surfaces of section, irrespective of whether or not the system is integrable.

We perform an analytical study of the external cavity modes of a semiconductor laser subject to conventional optical feedback as modeled by the well-known Lang–Kobayashi equations. Specifically, the bifurcation set is derived in the three-dimensional parameter space of feedback phase, feedback strength and pump current of the laser. Different open regions in this space correspond to different numbers of physically relevant external cavity modes of the laser. Some of their stability properties are determined from the characteristic equation.

In this paper, the existence and bifurcations of periodic motions in a discontinuous dynamical system is studied through a discontinuous mechanical model. One can follow the study presented herein to investigate other discontinuous dynamical systems. Such a sampled discontinuous system consists of two subsystems on boundaries and three subsystems in subdomains. From the theory of discontinuous dynamical systems, switchability conditions of a flow at and on the boundaries are developed. From such switchability conditions, grazing motions of a flow at boundaries are discussed, and sliding motions of a flow on boundaries are presented. Based on the motions in each domain and on each boundary, generic mappings are introduced. Using the generic mappings, mapping structures for specific periodic motions are developed. Based on the grazing conditions and appearance and vanishing conditions of sliding motions, parametric dynamics of the existences of the specific periodic motions are presented. In addition, the traditional saddle-node bifurcation, Neimark bifurcations and period-doubling bifurcation are used for parametric dynamics of periodic motions. Bifurcation trees of periodic motions varying with a system parameter are presented first, and phase trajectories of periodic motions are illustrated. The $G$-functions are presented for the illustration of the motion switchability at the boundaries and sliding motions on the boundaries. Codimension-2 parametric dynamics of periodic motions are studied and how to develop the 2D parametric maps for specific periodic motions are presented. In the end, periodic motions with grazing are illustrated.

In this paper, we have analyzed the critical behavior of even–even Ru and Pd isotopes between U(5) and SO(6) limits of interacting boson model via Catastrophe Theory in combination with a coherent state formalism to generate energy surfaces. The parameters of the Hamiltonian are determined via least-square fitting to the experimental data for different Ru and Pd isotopes. Our results suggest a second-order phase transition in these isotopic chains and propose the best candidates for E(5) critical symmetry. Also, the analogy between the critical exponents of ground state quantum phase transition and Landau values for the critical exponents of thermodynamic phase transitions are described.
