We demonstrate a large area time domain terahertz (THz) imaging system capable of scanning 1 meter square area in less than 20-100 minutes for several security applications. The detection of concealed explosives; metallic and non-metallic weapons (such as ceramic, plastic or composite guns and knives); and flammables in luggage, packages and personnel has been demonstrated. Transmission mode images of luggage containing threat items are discussed. Reflection mode images of luggage and personnel are discussed. Time domain THz images can be analyzed for 3 dimensional and volumetric information. Time domain THz images have advantages over coherent narrow band imaging methods, with freedom from interference artifacts and with greater ability to discard irrelevant or intervening reflections through time discrimination.

Visualization is primarily utilized as a training method to enhance athletic movement quality, increase concentration power, and minimize competition stress on the player while building firm confidence. Physical literacy (PL) provides a valuable lens for analyzing physical activity (PA) movement in more significant social and affective learning processes. This paper presents an Interactive Visualization positioning in physical education (IVPPE) to deal with the signal fluctuations and positioning techniques in visualizing Deep Neural Network (DNN). To ensure the success of their game, athletes are always looking for new ways to improve their health and performance. Using sensors to keep tabs on training and recovery has become more popular among athletes. Currently, sports teams are using sensors to track both the players’ internal and external workloads. It illustrates the multilayer localizer (MLL) based on transfer learning to improve the positioning accuracy and physical literacy positioning model (PLPM) as a health determinant. A variety of data augmentation techniques are used to combat signal fluctuations. As a result, the combined effects of motivation-promoting physical activity-based visualization improve the accuracy ratio to 96.7%, prediction ratio to 96.2%, efficiency ratio to 96.8%, and reduce the error rate to 18.7%, stress level (52.8%) compared to other conventional models and have a positive impact on the localizer and positioning, making a difference in physical activity (PA) levels.

In this work, a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique with an Nd:YAG laser source was used to produce pure Hydroxyapatite (HA) and Cu-substituted HA (Cu-HA) coatings on stainless steel substrates in vacuum at room temperature. It is observed that the combined effects of percentages of Cu dopants and laser energy as well as annealing temperature significantly modify the crystallinity of the films. The morphology and structural properties of the deposited HA films were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. FESEM images displayed various shapes of nanoparticles with high-surface density throughout the area of the substrate and with typical sizes around 26–208 nm. XRD analysis confirmed that post-deposition annealing is essential to achieve the desired crystallinity and uniformity of coatings. The Raman spectrum of HA has peaks at 958.22, 437.48, and 587.05 cm${}^{-1}$ attributed to the ${\nu }_1$ PO${}_4^{3-}$, ${\nu }_2$ PO${}_4^{3-}$, and ${\nu }_3$ PO${}_4^{3-}$, respectively. The synthesized HA and Cu-HA crystalline films are nanostructures with dense and compact microstructures. Finally, irregular surface and crystalline structure of fabricated films lead to the extension of the surface and enhance the cell’s proliferation in medical uses and biomedical applications.

A subthreshold MOS-based pseudo-resistor featuring a very high value and ultra-low distortion is proposed. A bandpass neural amplifier with a very low high-pass cutoff frequency is designed, to demonstrate the linearity of the proposed resistor. A BJT less CTAT current generator has been introduced to minimize the temperature drift of the resistor and make tuning easier. The standalone resistor has achieved 0.5% better linearity and a 12% improved temperature coefficient over the existing architectures. A neural amplifier has been designed with the proposed resistor as a feedback element. It demonstrated 31dB mid-band gain and a low-pass cutoff frequency of 0.85Hz. The circuit operates from a 1V supply and draws 950nA current at room temperature.

This paper presents a design and simulation of a low-noise, low-voltage, and low-power complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) logarithmic amplifier for biomedical applications like digital hearing aid applications. The amplifier block of analog front end is used as a logarithmic amplifier, based on the progressive-compression parallel-summation architecture with DC offset cancelation by adding an off-chip coupling capacitor at each stage. A fully nontailed differential limiting amplifier with bulk-driven input pair is used to achieve larger voltage gain and low voltage operation. The proposed logarithmic amplifier was designed and simulated with process parameters variation in standard 0.18-$\mu$m CMOS technology. The circuit operates with a single 0.4-V power supply voltage and dissipates 0.832$\mu$W. The simulated input dynamic range is about 60dB, which covers the input amplitudes ranging from 1$\mu$V to 10mV, and the $-$3-dB bandwidth of the amplifier is from 400Hz to 8.27kHz with simulated total input-referred noise is 0.731$\mu$V@8 kHz.

The current scenario focuses on lightweight and better energy-absorbing structural materials for critical engineering applications in aerospace, automobiles, marine, electronic, and implant materials for biomedical industries. The magnesium-based syntactic foams are the preferred choice of material in the same category due to their lightweight, higher plateau strength, better damping characteristics, and excellent energy absorption behavior. Many works were reported based on the polymer and aluminum-based syntactic foams and their developments. However, the rapidly increasing interest in magnesium-based syntactic foams and the adoption of the applications are still at a nascent stage. This proposed review work comprehensively insights the magnesium-based syntactic foam; various hollow filler material usages and summarizes the influence of physical and mechanical behavior on processing routes and future research opportunities for applications.

In this issue, we have two highlights that will look at how far imaging technologies have come since the X-ray. First, Keefe Chee from BD Life Sciences, Singapore, discusses how real-time imaging spectral flow cytometry (RTI-SFC) allows scientists to identify previously unclassifiable cells in real time, bridging a long-standing gap in biomedical research.

And then we have Torrey Smith, CEO of Endiatx, to share with us about PillBot™, the world's first motorised pill camera that will allow a doctor to view the entire stomach and assess for any lesions, making stomach cancer diagnosis more accessible and palatable.

Finally, some research highlights we have this issue include a novel diagnostic tool that will improve the clinical diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders, a textile that can convert body movement into electricity, and a uterine tissue-specific hydrogel that could aid in infertility.

A new biomedical image segmentation method based on deep learning networks has been constructed. Under the framework of deep learning, a dual-branch deep learning network structure was designed to perform average pooling and maximum pooling on input image data, respectively. The results of pooling processing are sent to multi-layer convolution for further processing, where 2D convolution and dilated convolution are used, respectively, and the more flexible SoftMax function is selected for activation processing. Multiple fully connected processes were used between each link and between two branches to form better fusion criteria. The experimental results show that our method has a more ideal segmentation effect in both homologous and heterogeneous training segmentation experiments, with AC, SE, and SP indicators reaching over 95%, 84%, and 99%, respectively.

In the medical field, ontologies are mainly used to standardise the coding of knowledge, either during the drafting phase of documents or during subsequent processing intended to give them a format which makes them usable for automatic processing. In this sense, they have a normative role analogous to the classical medical terminologies (in particular thesauri): to set up a common vocabulary and to make use of shared representations and concepts, in order to allow the interoperability of documents and medicals information systems. Medical and biomedical data play a very important role in the medical field. They solve many of the problems encountered during the diagnosis of diseases and in the prescription medical treatments. The objective of this paper is to develop ontology for the field of medical analyses in an attempt to facilitate the tasks of the various actors in the medical field, namely: doctors, laboratory assistants and patients. It also endeavours to improve the care of patients and facilitate the various acts of health professionals, the purpose of which is to aid in decision-making in the treatment of a disease. To this end, we followed the so-called METHONTOLOGY based on the phases ranging from the needs specification to the evaluation and documentation of this ontology of medical analysis.

This paper analyses a number of factors which are implicated in the success of biomedical innovation processes in the United Kingdom (UK): the observability of the innovation process to the participants; the role and interests of UK public and private sector networks; and the ability of the wider constituency to push or drive the innovation process. This study addresses four ongoing developments (familial breast cancer diagnosis, cystic fibrosis gene therapy, inherited eye disease gene therapy and breast cancer screening). The paper draws directly on research funded by the ESRC. Documentary evidence has been analysed for relevant information together with information derived from semi-structured interviews. This has taken account of the key contributions over time from differing professional groups, public and commercial organisations (including user groups) and sectors.

Due to their small size, nanoparticles have brought a new era for researchers. They are utilized in different areas, including the food industry, pharmaceuticals, and medicals, for their outstanding properties. Many medicines are also used to treat patients with various diseases. Many researchers are continuing their research to find more applications of these materials. This paper reviews how nanoparticles synthesized from plants can help the immune response. Different nanoparticles have been initially studied with their source of origin, properties, and applications in the immune response. Then, how various nanoparticles work on the immune response has been briefly discussed. Different applications of nanoparticles on immune response with different perceptions have also been considered. The results of the applications of these particles have been debated as well. In the end, these particles’ potential challenges and future opportunities for immune response have been reviewed. This review paper will work as a guide for nanoparticle researchers in immunity.
