Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be produced in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly manner using a process that has gained significant attention called green synthesis. This study was designed to synthesize and characterize AgNPs using an aqueous solution of Cordyceps militaris, followed by an evaluation of their biological activities. Synthesis and characterization were confirmed by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, which revealed peaks at 2920.51${\mathrm{\text{cm}}}^{-1}$, 1651${\mathrm{\text{cm}}}^{-1}$ and 1634${\mathrm{\text{cm}}}^{-1}$, indicating multiple functional groups. Fourier transform-infrared and gas chromatography mass spectrometry analyses identified the presence of 30 compounds. UV–Vis spectroscopy showed a distinct peak at 410nm, and scanning electron microscopy, at magnifications of 200000× and 50000×, provided visual confirmation of the nanoparticles. The X-ray diffraction analysis further confirmed that the synthesized particles were AgNPs with a face-centered cubic crystal structure, showing additional peaks at $10.32^{\circ },12.76^{\circ },14^{\circ }$, and $38.28^{\circ }$ in the diffractogram. Biologically, the AgNPs demonstrated antioxidant activity in the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, with noteworthy inhibition observed at a concentration of 600$\mu$g. The maximum inhibition, corresponding to antidiabetic activity, was also recorded at this concentration via in vitro assays. Additionally, the AgNPs exhibited strong antimicrobial potential against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In conclusion, this study highlights the therapeutic potential of AgNPs, suggesting their use as nanomedicine or phytomedicine for treating various ailments.

The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) allows for highly sensitive and specific amplification of DNA. It is the backbone of many genetic experiments and tests. Recently, three labs independently uncovered a novel and simple way to perform a PCR reaction. Instead of repetitive heating and cooling, a temperature gradient across the reaction vessel drives thermal convection. By convection, the reaction liquid circulates between hot and cold regions of the chamber. The convection triggers DNA amplification as the DNA melts into two single strands in the hot region and replicates into twice the amount in the cold region. The amplification progresses exponentially as the convection moves on. We review the characteristics of the different approaches and show the benefits and prospects of the method.

We propose a simple model of landfill and study a minimal time control problem where the re-circulation leachate is the manipulated variable. We propose a scheme to construct the optimal strategy by dividing the state space into three subsets ${{ℰ}}_0$, ${{𝒵}}_1$ and the complementary. On ${{ℰ}}_0$ and ${{𝒵}}_1$, the optimal control is constant until reaching target, while it can exhibit a singular arc outside these two subsets. Moreover, the singular arc could have a barrier. In this case, we prove the existence of a switching curve that passes through a point of prior saturation under the assumption that the set ${{ℰ}}_0$ intersects the singular arc. Numerical computations allow then to determine the switching curve and depict the optimal synthesis.
