    A STUDY ON INDIAN HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE BASED BUSINESS INCUBATORS

    The purpose of this paper is to identify and explore the various range of business incubation services being provided to the nascent entrepreneurs which is based on comprehensive compilation and subsequent analysis of literature followed by case based approach in context to Indian higher educational institute (HEI) based business incubation centres. The objective behind this research is to critically assess the assistance services and to prioritize the service dimensions provided by the business incubation centres. Data has been collected from various business incubation centres to capture the experience of the incubated clients and other stakeholders who are directly and indirectly attached to the business incubation centres. The novelty of this paper is that there is no available literature that has followed a similar approach in measuring most influential business incubation service parameters taking different HEI based Indian incubation centres. Statistical analysis has been deployed for investigation of service dimensions and prioritized it accordingly as well as a model has been proposed with the identified service dimension that influences the creation of the new ventures. The findings suggests that HEI based business incubation centres are providing services to emerging economies by leveraging talent and thus creating value. The findings have both entrepreneurial and managerial implications for decision makers in universities, industry and government. The management of incubators, entrepreneurs as well as researchers can take input from this study in order to accomplish effective service management for scalable ventures.

    INDIVIDUAL ENTREPRENEURIAL CHARACTERISTICS AND ENTREPRENEURIAL SUCCESS POTENTIAL

    Entrepreneurial technology-based new venture constitutes a dominant proportion of incubated firms. Often, such firms are established by engineering graduates. This paper investigates a methodology for assessing the potential for success of new ventures set up at an early stage by engineering students via an evaluation of the entrepreneurial personalities of engineering students. The survey of 215 students of Manufacturing Engineering indicates particular traits have a strong predictive impact on the proclivity towards the different 'idea factors on innovation' suggested by Goldenberg et al. [1999]. In particular, 'risk-taking propensity' and 'need to achieve' are two critical characteristics that significantly influence the selection of 'success-intended' idea factors whereas 'external locus of control' influences the selection of 'failure-intended' idea factors. The findings have important implications for researchers, business incubators, and policy makers inside and outside universities. Based on the extensive literature and successful result in demonstrating entrepreneurial characteristics as predictors of sustainable competitive advantage of future entrepreneurs by identifying types of idea factor adopter, the results of this study can be used either as a self-evaluation (self-screening) before starting a new venture that has a higher success probability. Specifically, the results indicate that the classification of idea factor adopters, in terms of entrepreneurial behavior, the incubator may be better able to identify the go or no-go decision for applicants. For instance, incubators could try to base their selection process for business incubation programme partly on information provided by applicants about personality traits and preferences regarding entrepreneurship.

    DEVELOPING INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT OPEN INNOVATION: CASE STUDIES FROM THE EAST OF ENGLAND

    This paper investigates the role that publicly funded infrastructure can play in supporting the implementation of open innovation at particular locations. Three case studies of open innovation infrastructure projects in the East of England illustrate contrasting approaches to delivering an infrastructure to support open innovation. The paper analyzes the cases using concepts from the literature on open innovation, regional innovation systems and business incubation. The cases reveal insights on how emerging management theories can have direct influence on regional innovation policies, and reveal the complexities of managing changing multi-stakeholder interests in relation to an approach to supporting innovation whose success is inherently hard to measure.
