The improved food security in Asia that has facilitated the region’s development progress depends on nitrogenous fertilizers. Rising prices and shortages of imported fertilizer have prompted countries to explore alternative sources of crop nitrogen, including diversification with legumes. We evaluate an intervention in Nepal that promoted mungbean adoption. Our doubly robust impact evaluation approach accounts for nonrandom patterns of adoption related to livestock rearing, participation in agricultural cooperatives and training, and greater irrigated land use. Adopters growing mungbean for the 2-year study period showed an average increase of 20 kilograms (kg) in their annual consumption of mungbean-based foods, applied almost 40kg per hectare (ha) less fertilizers to their rice crops, and obtained an additional 280kg in rice yield per ha. Hence, agricultural innovations that use legumes such as mungbean can help promote sustainable intensification of cereal-based production systems, while enhancing food security and reducing balance-of-payments issues for the countries dependent on fertilizer imports.
Rice is a staple food crop around the world, and its demand is likely to rise significantly with growth in population. Increasing rice productivity and production largely depends on the availability of irrigation water. Thus, the efficient application of irrigation water such that the crop doesn’t experience moisture stress is of utmost importance. In the present study, a long short-term memory (LSTM)-based neural network with logistic regression has been used to predict the daily irrigation schedule of drip-irrigated rice. The correlation threshold of 0.75 was used for the selection of features, which helped in limiting the number of input parameters. Also, a dataset based on the recommendation of a domain expert, and another used by the tool Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM) was used for comparison. Field data comprising of weather station data and past irrigation schedules has been used to train the model. Grid search algorithm has been used to optimize the hyperparameters of the model. Nested cross-validation has been used for validating the results. The results show that the correlation-based selected dataset is as effective as the domain expert-recommended dataset in predicting the water requirement using LSTM as the base model. The models were evaluated on different parameters and a multi-criteria decision evaluation (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution [TOPSIS]) was used to find the best performing.
Rice variety identification is important for genetic breeding classification and crop yield estimation. Traditional identification methods are time-consuming and inaccurate. This paper proposes a method for rice variety identification based on the hyperspectral characteristics of leaves. Hyperspectral data of rice leaves were collected using a geophysical spectrometer imaging system. To reduce the redundance among the hyperspectral data and save the identification cost, locality preserving projections (LPP) is first applied to extract low-dimensional representative features from the leaf hyperspectral data. Then, support vector machine (SVM) is combined for conducting the identification of rice varieties. The experimental results show that the identification rate of 10 varieties of early rice was found to be 91.67% and the identification rate of 10 varieties of late rice was 97.33%.
Advanced statistical approaches have been applied to determine the temporal scaling-invariance laws in annual mean yields registered in Mexico during the period 1897–1999. When the maize, bean, wheat and rice series are treated as self-affine profiles through power spectrum analysis, the temporal fluctuation f-β is detected in each case for time scales of 2 to 103 years. β values (p < 0.0001) of -1.84 ± 0.15, -1.71 ± 0.218, -1.62 ± 0.194 and -1.7 ± 0.139 for maize, bean, wheat and rice profiles, respectively, suggest that short-term variation is important and are influencing the dynamic evolution of the yearly mean yields. Thus, in addition to the linear trends driven by endogenous factors of agricultural systems, grain yield variation may be due to external forcings such as climatic oscillations and/or solar signals. Through the spectral analysis using the maximum entropy method, the influence of external forcings on the behavior of the annual mean yields in all four crops was evidenced. The detected main external forcings are: a 6- to 8-year political oscillation, the magnetic and sunspot cycles of the Sun, and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Taking into account the number of significant periodicities, the order of annual mean yield series' sensitivity to external forcings influencing their short-term variation is as follows: maize < wheat < rice < bean.
