Trends in Scientific Publications of Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an important component of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). The fast economic growth of mainland China in the past two decades has promoted the use of TCM beyond Chinese-speaking countries. Chinese researchers have published more TCM research studies in CAM-related professional journals, including the American Journal of Chinese Medicine (AJCM), the highest impact journal in Chinese medicine. The consistent increase of the impact factor of the AJCM suggests a growth in TCM popularity. This study analyzed articles published in the AJCM between 2004 and 2011. Our data show that while enthusiasm towards cardiovascular, nervous system and inflammation related research remained high, more herbal investigations and cancer studies were published. Furthermore, a reduction in TCM formulation studies was replaced by increasing botanical single constituent research. Examples of frequently cited studies, including those before 2004, are presented. These data are not only important to the scientific community for recognition of trends in TCM research, but also for providing information to TCM researchers who are targeting potentially highly cited studies.

Analyzing Funding Patterns and Their Evolution in Two Medical Research Topics

This paper analyzes funding patterns and their evolution in two medical research topics: breast cancer and ovarian cancer, taking into account cross-agency and cross-national co-funding. A bibliometric analysis of 355463 papers from PubMed (273526 on breast cancer and 81937 on ovarian cancer) brought back 91 funding agencies involved in breast cancer and 65 in ovarian cancer. Additionally, the paper examined the evolution of medical subject headings (MESH) funded by agencies. An analysis of patterns in funding, co-funding, MESH, and their evolution, was carried out using social network analysis (SNA) methodology. The results show the importance of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in both breast and ovarian cancer. The NCI achieves its policy goals by co-funding its programs with both national and cross-national agencies. Moreover, the MESH agencies co-funded in the two years studied coincided; however, it must be said that the number of agencies which participated in research funding also increased.

PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF A NEAR-INFRARED LIGHT RESPONSIVE MICROCAPSULE SYSTEM FOR CANCER THERAPY

A novel near-infrared light responsive microcapsule system, gold nanorod-covered DOX-loaded hollow CaCO3 microcapsule (AuNR-HM-DOX) is developed for cancer therapy. The hollow CaCO3 microcapsules were prepared based on the self-assembly between chitosan and sodium alginate on CaCO3 particles via layer-by-layer technique, and then covered with gold nanorods to obtain the microcapsule system. Upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, microcapsule with gold nanorods can convert the absorbed NIR light into heat. Meanwhile, doxorubicin (DOX), a chemotherapy drug, is loaded into the microcapsule system via electrostatic adsorption for combined photothermal therapy and chemotherapy. Properties of AuNR-HM-DOX including grain diameter, optical spectra were characterized. Confocal fluorescence imaging was performed to observe the morphology of the capsules and existence of DOX in the core, confirming the successful loading of DOX. The release of DOX from the capsules under continuous NIR irradiation was investigated to evaluate the temperature responsiveness of AuNR-HM-DOX. Results indicate that AuNR-HM-DOX microcapsules possess uniform particle size and high light responsiveness. The combination of chemical and physical therapy of AuNR-HM-DOX features great potential as an adjuvant therapeutic alternative material for combined cancer therapy.
