Plasma-assisted methanol reforming is an effective technology to produce hydrogen for various clean energy applications. In this study, hydrogen was produced from methanol reforming in a unique single stage microplasma reactor. Microplasma was produced between the capillary stainless steel tube electrodes by using high voltage direct current (DC) power supply. Blend of methanol and water was supplied to the microplasma reactor in a controlled flow rate using nitrogen as carrier gas. The effects of applied input power to the discharge and methanol feed rate on the performance of the plasma methanol decomposition were investigated. The experimental results showed that increasing the applied input power expressively increased the methanol conversion and hydrogen energy yield. In contrast, the increased feed rate significantly decreased the methanol conversion efficiency though it enriched the hydrogen energy yield. Under selective conditions, hydrogen energy yield of 24.14 g kW${}^{-1}$ h${}^{-1}$ was achieved with the conversion efficiency of 71% and 50% selectivity for H₂, which is comparatively better than many of plasma-assisted methanol reforming processes. This investigation reveals that methanol reforming through a single stage microplasma reactor has the ability to produce hydrogen efficiently without coke formation at room-temperature and atmospheric pressure.

We examine the impact of the hot drifting electron on stimulated Raman backscattering, which is coupled to decay instability, in a magnetized plasma. Through parametric coupling, this produces a plasma wave that moves forward and an electromagnetic wave that shifts downward. The plasma wave produced by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in this process decays into an ion-acoustic wave and a secondary, longer-wavelength Langmuir wave traveling opposite to the ion-acoustic wave. This energy diversion and attenuation of the primary Langmuir wave by drifting electrons limit the amplitude of SRS. In the presence of drifting electrons, the SRS is suppressed significantly and the plasma wave is attenuated resonantly at a higher rate.

The key to shale gas exploration is the characterization of gas migration under the combination of multiple factors. To address the long-standing energy challenge of rapidly and accurately quantifying the behavior of natural fractures and matrix pores in shale at an engineering scale in interaction with gas migration. This study proposes an interdisciplinary model for shale gas extraction by adopting fractal theory. Five innovative microstructural parameters are developed to characterize the size and scale of natural matrix pores/fractures in shale, so as to investigate the contributions of fractal distributed pores and fractal power-law distributed fractures to shale gas extraction. The present results of the proposed model are consistent with the exploitation state of the UK Bowland Shale #114 well. The evolution of the shale microstructure will lead to changes in gas migration behavior throughout the reservoir and in turn affect shale stress, temperature and gas adsorption–desorption effect, and finally have a significant impact on permeability. It is found that in the present analysis of the entire Bowland Shale, the overall permeability changes by 10.8% with the evolution of fractal distributed pores and by 41.3% with the evolution of fractal power-law fractures. This work provides a new approach for rapidly exploring the behavior of shale fractures and matrix pores at engineering scales. This work also offers a new and practical baseline for shale gas extraction assessment and fossil energy management.

Based on a follow-up study of Xizang Autonomous Region’s ecological civilization construction and its clean energy development, this paper takes Chamdo as a case study and uses the SWOT matrix to analyze the basic conditions, challenges, and possible pathways for clean energy development. The purpose is to discuss whether Xizang can play a prominent role in the green and low-carbon transition. It demonstrates that, under the framework of nationwide planning, starting from Xizang’s resource endowments and the practical demands of sustainable development, Xizang can capitalize on external opportunities, such as policy advantages and power assistance, to build a diversified clean energy system that integrates hydropower, wind, solar, and energy storage. By strengthening the coordination between the clean energy sector and other industries, Xizang can promote both local consumption of clean energy and its transmission to other regions. This not only enables Xizang to play a prominent role in the nation’s green and low-carbon transition, but also uses clean energy as a bridge to reinforce collaborative efforts among eastern, central, and western regions in achieving dual carbon goals, while fostering common prosperity, and enhancing national unity.

Addressing the three major stresses facing our planet, clean air, clean energy, and clean water, is within our reach. At present, new materials such as metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks, produced by reticular chemistry, are at the forefront of efforts to capture carbon dioxide from air and harvest water from air. We envision that the products of these two capture processes (carbon dioxide and water) can be fed into a conversion cycle in which they are used to produce fuels and chemicals via artificial photosynthesis. The use of air as a nonpolluting, cyclable, and sustainable resource for carbon and water can be powered by sunlight. We describe how the scientific basis for realizing this vision is either already achieved or being established, and that in the fullness of time this paradigm may lead to new global industries and a thriving “air economy.”

We need energy, and while current renewable energy sources like solar and wind power provide us with electricity, they can be unreliable and the energy they produce is not suitable for long-term storage. But what is? Hydrogen. With the highest energy content per unit weight of any fuel and only giving off a byproduct of water, hydrogen is regarded as the fuel of the future. However, there is a problem with hydrogen energy: people are resorting to using fossil fuels to separate hydrogen from other molecules. We can avoid that by using the Spirulina Platensis algae to produce hydrogen for us. This project aimed to test yard waste as a viable nutrient source for Spirulina Platensis for the purpose of producing hydrogen. The use of yard waste makes this process carbon-negative. Algae were grown in 200 mL conical flasks with either commercial nutrient solution, distilled water, or 4 grams of yard waste, and the growth of algae was compared by determining cell density using a Secchi Stick and cell counting. It was found that while the concentration of algae in the flask with the yard waste solution grew the least, it still grew despite an observed change in pH. This suggests that yard waste can be used as a nutrient for algae growth, and lays the groundwork for further testing.

A novel approach to trend monitoring and the identification of promising high-tech solutions is presented in the chapter. It is based on the ontology of a technology/market trend, Hype Cycles methodology, and semantic indicators which provide evidence of a maturity level of a technology as well as of emerging user needs (customer pains) in high-tech industries. This approach forms the basis for text mining software tools implemented in Semantic Hub platform. The algorithms behind these tools allow users to escape from getting too general or garbage results which make it impossible to identify promising technologies at early stages (early detection, weak signals). Besides, these algorithms provide high-quality results in the extraction of complex multiword terms which correspond to technological concepts and user pains forming a trend. The methodology and software developed as a result of this study are applicable to various industries with minor adjustments.
