The motivation of this paper is to name the central lines of development in the research field of innovation-related knowledge engineering. This helps to define the starting point for an urgently required interdisciplinary academic discussion about the design of a core ontology for innovations. A review about the currently known ontologies for innovation emphasizes the need for engineering a core ontology for innovations based on a valid consensual understanding of the term innovation. In a universally applicable conception, innovation is characterized as a (re-) combination of purposes and means. A transmission of this conceptualization is presented, visualized and its usage shown through the ontology InnOnto. The paper concludes with implications for future research tasks in the field of innovation-related knowledge engineering.

Today's metadata models and metadata standards often focus on a specific media type only, lack combinability with other metadata models, or are limited with respect to the features they support. Thus they are not sufficient to describe the semantics of rich, structured multimedia documents. To overcome these limitations, we have developed a comprehensive model for representing multimedia metadata, the Multimedia Metadata Ontology (M3O). The M3O has been developed by an extensive analysis of related work and abstracts from the features of existing metadata models and metadata standards. It is based on the foundational ontology DOLCE+DnS Ultralight and makes use of ontology design patterns. The M3O serves as generic modeling framework for integrating the existing metadata models and metadata standards rather than replacing them. As such, the M3O can be used internally as semantic data model within complex multimedia applications such as authoring tools or multimedia management systems. To make use of the M3O in concrete multimedia applications, a generic application programming interface (API) has been implemented based on a sophisticated persistence layer that provides explicit support for ontology design patterns. To demonstrate applicability of the M3O API, we have integrated and applied it with our SemanticMM4U framework for the multi-channel generation of semantically annotated multimedia documents.

Information flow control on the Internet is a desirable feature when it comes to content such as neo-Nazi propaganda, child pornography, or material showing extreme violence or crimes. In order to provide for a flexible control of information flow on the Internet, we present the pattern system InFO (short for: Information Flow Ontology). InFO provides a common support for different enforcing systems such as routers, proxies, or name servers by abstracting from existing as well as possible future regulation types. Thus, unlike existing solutions, InFO provides information flow control on the Internet-layer, transport-layer, as well as application-layer. In addition, InFO allows for linking the technical implementation of a flow control policy with a human-readable representation including its legal background (law) and organizational motivation (code of conduct). Besides a detailed description of the pattern system, we also provide various examples demonstrating the practical applicability of InFO. InFO has been implemented for name servers, routers, as well as application-level proxy servers. Its source code is available to the public.

Legal ontologies play a key role in various legal applications and have been broadly used by many stakeholders. Innovative systems and ontologies in the law hold potential to conduct legal research. With the needs for legal information management in smart applications, especially for Vietnamese law, it is vitally important to construct core legal ontologies for knowledge representation. This study proposes a core ontology for Vietnamese legal documents which covers general legal domain called as ViLO. The ViLO ontology mainly consists of related institutions of Vietnamese political system, types and structures of legal documents. The method of the NeOn-based collaborations among domain experts and ontology engineers was conducted to build up the ViLO ontology. Through FOCA-based validation results, the proposed method was shown to be effective and efficient. The resulting ontology was demonstrated to be reliable and enriched. The ViLO ontology is supposed to be a basis for further constructions of domain ontologies and artificial intelligence applications in Vietnamese law.
