With the advancement of smart grid technology, the issue of power system network security has become increasingly critical. To fully utilize the power grid’s vast data resources and enhance the efficiency of anomaly detection, this paper proposes an improved decision tree (DT)-based automatic identification approach for anomalies in electric power big data. The method employs six-dimensional features extracted from the dimensions of volatility, trend, and variability to characterize the time series of power data. These features are integrated into a hybrid DT-SVM-LSTM framework, combining the strengths of DTs, support vector machines, and long short-term memory networks. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves an accuracy of 96.8%, a precision of 95.3%, a recall of 94.8%, and an F1-score of 95.0%, outperforming several state-of-the-art methods cited in the literature. Moreover, the approach exhibits strong robustness to noise, maintaining high detection accuracy even under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the method in efficiently detecting anomalies and addressing noise interference.

With the increasing popularity of online social networking platforms, the amount of social data has grown exponentially. Social data analysis is essential as spamming activities and spammers are escalating over online social networking platforms. This paper focuses on spammer detection on the Twitter social networking platform. Although existing researchers have developed numerous machine learning methods to detect spammers, these methods are inefficient for appropriately detecting spammers on Twitter due to the imbalance of spam and nonspam data distribution, the involvement of diverse features and the applicability of data mechanisms by spammers to avoid their detection. This research work proposes a novel hybrid approach of the gravitational search algorithm and the decision tree (HGSDT) for detecting Twitter spammers. The individual decision tree (DT) algorithm is not able to address the challenges as it is unstable and ineffective for the higher level of favorable data for a particular attribute. The gravitational search algorithm (GSA) constructs the DTs with improved performance as the gravitational forces act as the information-transferring agents through mass agents. Moreover, the GSA is efficient in handling the data of higher dimensional search space. In the HGSDT approach, the construction of the DT and splitting of nodes are performed with the heuristic function and Newton’s laws. The performance of the proposed HGSDT approach is determined for the Social Honeypot dataset and 1KS-10KN dataset by conducting three different experiments to analyze the impact of training data size, features and spammer ratio. The result of the first experiment shows the need of a higher proportion of training data size, the second experiment signifies the more importance of textual content-based features compared to the other feature categories and the third experiment indicates the requirement of balanced data to attain the effective performance of the proposed approach. The overall performance comparison indicates that the proposed HGSDT approach is superior to the incorporated machine learning methods of DT, support vector machine and back propagation neural network for detecting Twitter spammers.

As the aging population continues to grow, the increasing number of disabled elderly individuals poses ongoing challenges to society in terms of healthcare and medical burdens. Grading disability is of significant importance for improving medical services and allocating social resources. Traditional grading methods using a single assessment scale tend to be subjective and cannot comprehensively and accurately reflect the real situation. This paper presents the NES (Needs assessment of Elderly care in Shanghai) scale, based on 33 quantified scoring items from basic surveys, to enhance the objectivity and accuracy of disability grading. Correlation analysis of observed items using the C4.5 decision tree algorithm is conducted, followed by an analysis and evaluation of the scale’s performance. The data used in this study are derived from 266 questionnaires collected from eight regions in Shanghai and categorized into three classes: physiological (JKOM/BADL), psychological (BDI/SDS/SAS), and cognitive (CDR). The analysis results show that the NES scale exhibits better robustness in physiological assessment compared to the BADL and JKOM scales. In psychological assessment, the NES scale performs similarly to the SDS and SAS scales. In cognitive assessment, the NES scale’s grading level is slightly higher than that of the CDR scale, demonstrating good comprehensive disability assessment capabilities.

Stroke is an acute cerebrovascular disease characterized by a high incidence, disability rate, recurrence rate, and mortality rate. Depression, as one of the main types of mood disorders, can manifest as symptoms such as a loss of interest in daily activities, reduced energy, diminished self-esteem, insomnia, and decreased appetite. There exists a significant relationship between these two conditions in terms of their pathogenesis. To delve deeper into the factors associated with the occurrence of both diseases, particularly examining the influence of depression on stroke risk, the authors conducted a large-scale investigation and data collection in the population of Shanghai, obtained 5599 valid data points, including information on hypertension, abnormal blood lipid levels, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, body mass index (BMI), a history of stroke, family history of stroke, previous transient ischemic attacks, smoking history, and exercise habits. Ultimately, the authors employed the decision tree C4.5 algorithm to construct a risk analysis model for both stroke and depression, analyzing the risk factors contributing to their occurrence and inferring the correlation between depression and stroke. The results revealed a close association between depression and a history of stroke, BMI, gender, and physical activity. Additionally, in the nonelderly population, psychological factors such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and stress were found to be closely linked to stroke onset. In many instances, regular exercise may mitigate the adverse effects of depression on stroke risk.

This study aimed to analyze the factors influencing vitamin D (VD)-related knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) in middle-aged and elderly patients with ankle fractures using the binary logistic regression and decision tree models, thereby providing scientific evidence for VD-related recovery strategies. A Chinese version of the nutrition KAP questionnaire was administered in a Grade III A Hospital using random sampling for the investigation. Meanwhile, the factors influencing KAP were analyzed using the aforementioned two models. The results of the binary logistic regression model showed that the patient age [odds ratio $\mathrm{\text{(OR)}}=0.186$; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.117–0.295], spouse education ($\mathrm{\text{OR}}=0.336$; 95% CI: 0.267–0.422), and spouse occupation ($\mathrm{\text{OR}}=1.351$; 95% CI: 1.078–1.693) were the factors influencing VD-related KAP. The decision tree chi-squared automatic interaction detector (CHAID) algorithm showed that spouse education, patient age, and living room lighting were the influencing factors, among which spouse education was the most important. VD in middle-aged and elderly patients with ankle fractures was affected by the age and the education level of the spouse. These two models can analyze the influencing factors of knowledge and practice, and can be used together to complement each other.

The objective of this study was to construct a prediction model for early diagnosis and classification of lung cancer based on multi-dimensional clinical data. Three advanced machine learning models — Random Forest, Decision Tree, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) — were employed to predict lung cancer using features such as age, chronic disease history, and clinical symptoms. The models were optimized through various strategies to improve predictive performance. The results demonstrated that all three models achieved high accuracy and sensitivity in lung cancer prediction. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of feature importance identified key factors such as age and chronic disease history that significantly influenced prediction outcomes. Among the models, the SVM exhibited particularly strong performance, providing robust support for accurate lung cancer prediction. Future work will focus on integrating multimodal data and optimizing model architecture and hyperparameters to further enhance the predictive accuracy and clinical utility of the model, thereby contributing to the early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.

Although neural networks are most commonly used in the field of image super-resolution (SR), methods based on decision trees are still discussed. These kinds of algorithm need less time to compute than others because of their simple structure but still yield high quality image SR. In this paper, we propose an SR algorithm using the multi-grained cascade forest (SRGCF) method. Our algorithm first uses multi-grained scanning to process the spatial relationships of image features, thus the representational learning ability is improved. During the reconstruction process, the image obtained by cascade forest training is used as the input of the next training, therefore, the image features are continuously emphasized. The training of the cascade forest ends when the evaluation value is optimal. Because the decision tree uses a divide-and-conquer strategy, the SR of an image is improved in an iterative manner simply and quickly. Compared with existing methods, our method not only avoids the tradeoff between reconstruction quality and run time, but also has a good generalization capability. It can be quickly applied to the many cases of image SR.

Objective: Hidden knowledge could be discovered within a large practical data of in vitro fertilization (IVF) practice. In this study, Machine learning-based data mining techniques were utilized to construct a reliable prediction model for clinical pregnancy in IVF.

Study Design: A retrospective cohort multicenter study involving 4.570 IVF cycles. All patients underwent fresh embryo transfer at either the cleavage or blastocyst stage between January 2015 and December 2019. The experiment focused on utilizing tree-based classifiers to generate and compare the most effective prediction model that could predict a clinical pregnancy through clinical data. Additionally, each classifier is optimized via a genetic algorithm technique, along with the selection of variables.

Results: Both the decision tree and random forest showed similar performance that was much better than the gradient boost. The two superior classifiers achieved a balanced accuracy of roughly 0.62. Additionally, each prediction model was shown to work optimally with different combinations of variables, with some variables being consistently included, such as female age, and some consistently excluded, which provides an insight into the relationship between the variables and each prediction model.

Conclusion: Machine learning algorithm remains effective for the purpose of data mining and knowledge extraction in IVF clinical datasets through which a relatively reliable prediction system for clinical pregnancy could be constructed, provided the available data is sufficient.

Malaria is a life-threatening mosquito-borne disease. Recently, the number of malaria cases has increased worldwide, threatening vulnerable populations. Malaria is responsible for a high rate of morbidity and mortality in people all around the world. Each year, many people, die from this disease, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Thick and thin blood smears are used to determine parasite habitation and computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) techniques using machine learning (ML) are being used to assist. CADx reduces traditional diagnosis time, lessens socio-economic impact, and improves quality of life. This study develops a simplified model with selective features to reduce processing power and further shorten diagnostic time, which is important to resource-constrained areas. To improve overall classification results, we use a decision tree (DT)-based approach with image pre-processing called optimal features to identify optimal features. Various feature selection and extraction techniques are used, including information gain (IG). Our proposed model is compared to a benchmark state-of-art classification model. For an unseen dataset, our proposed model achieves accuracy, precision, recall, F-score, and processing time of 0.956, 0.949, 0.964, 0.956, and 9.877 s, respectively. Furthermore, our proposed model’s training time is less than those of the state-of-the-art classification model, while the performance metrics are comparable.

Measuring distances of cosmological sources such as galaxies, stars and quasars plays an increasingly critical role in modern cosmology. Obtaining the optical spectrum and consequently calculating the redshift as a distance indicator could instantly classify these objects. As long as spectroscopic observations are not available for many galaxies and the process of measuring the redshift is time-consuming and infeasible for large samples, machine learning (ML) approaches could be applied to determine the redshifts of galaxies from different features including their photometric colors. In this paper, by using the flux magnitudes from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) catalog, we develop two ML regression algorithms (decision tree and random forest) for estimating the redshifts taking color indices as input features. We find that the random forest algorithm produces the optimum result for the redshift prediction, and it will be further improved when the dataset is limited to a subset with z ≤ 2 giving the normalised standard deviation ${\overline{\text{Δ}Z}}_{norm }=0.005$ and the standard deviation ${\sigma }_{\Delta z} = 0.12.$ This work shows great potential of using the ML approach to determine the photometric redshifts of distant sources.
