This paper studies online scheduling on an unbounded drop-line parallel batch machine with delivery times and limited restarts. A drop-line parallel batch machine is a system that can process some jobs simultaneously as a batch. Jobs in a batch have the same starting time and the completion time of a job is equal to its starting time plus its processing time. Limited restarts mean that a running batch containing at least one restarted job cannot be restarted again. The objective is to minimize the time by which all jobs have been delivered. We prove that any online algorithm has a competitive ratio of at least $1+\alpha$, where $\alpha (\alpha \approx 0.5188)$ is the positive solution of the equation $x(x+x^2+x^3+1)=1$. We provide a best possible $(1+\alpha )$-competitive online algorithm for the problem. Furthermore, we study the restricted problem with small delivery times and provide a best possible online algorithm with a competitive ratio of $\frac{3}{2}$.

Promising biomedical applications of hybrid materials composed of gold nanoparticles and nucleic acids have attracted strong interest from the nanobiotechnological community. The particular interest is owing to the robust and easy-to-make synthetic approaches, to the versatile optical and catalytic properties of gold nanoparticles combined with the molecular recognition and programmable properties of nucleic acids. The significant progress is made in the development of DNA–gold nanostructures and their applications, such as molecular recognition, cell and tissue bioimaging, targeted delivery of therapeutic agents, etc. This review is focused on the critical discussion of the recent applications of the gold nanoparticles–nucleic acids hybrids. The effect of particle size, surface, charge and thermal properties on the interactions with functional nucleic acids is discussed. For each of the above topics, the basic principles, recent advances, and current challenges are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the systematization of data over the theranostic systems on the basis of the gold nanoparticles–nucleic acids hybrids. Specifically, we start our discussion with observation of the recent data on interaction of various gold nanoparticles with nucleic acids. Further we describe existing gene delivery systems, nucleic acids detection, and bioimaging technologies. Finally, we describe the phenomenon of the polymerase chain reaction improvement by gold nanoparticle additives and its potential underlying mechanisms. Lastly, we provide a short summary of reported data and outline the challenges and perspectives.

Over the last two decades, hundreds of cell penetrating peptides (CPPs) have been intensively developed as drug and nucleic acid delivery vectors. In many cases, however, the efficient delivery of exogenous bioactive molecules through the plasma membrane to their targets remains a tremendous challenging issue. CPPs have attracted tremendous research interest as efficient cellular delivery vehicles due to their intrinsic ability to enter cells and mediate uptake of a wide range of macromolecular cargos, such as proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, drugs and nanoparticle carriers. This review presents and discusses the current perspectives of CPP-mediated siRNA delivery system. We focus on the CPP-mediated siRNA delivery approaches, and particular emphasis is placed on the strategies for the advantages and disadvantages for each delivery approach. Lastly, the cellular uptake mechanisms of CPPs and the specific challenges associated with each delivery system of siRNAs are discussed.

Application of the zigzag (24, 0) single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) in delivery of carbamate and imine tautomers of capecitabine is investigated via quantum mechanical geometry optimizations followed by chemical shielding calculations. Torsion angle between ribose and cytosine rings is very close to the experimental value in both tautomers. This suggests that relative orientation of these rings is independent of presence of SWCNT. Their carbon nuclei become closer to the tube’s internal surface by about 1Å, when going from cytosine ring to aliphatic tail. Their cytosine and ribose rings bend so that fluorine atoms and 2${}^{\prime }$-OH group form ion-$\pi$ interaction with the surface. Calculated binding energies aside from observation of these sorts of interactions in these tautomers can propose SWCNT as their potent delivery tool. Most of the obtained conclusions are manifested in the observed trends for calculated chemical shielding values. They make connections among the reported experimental and computational distributions of chemical shielding values inside SWCNTs.

This article discusses the role of the protein corona in delivery systems with tagged nanoparticles and how knowledge of the protein corona can help in optimizing delivery. The basic question is whether and how the binding of proteins and other biomolecules at the nanoparticle surface interfere with the interaction between a tag and its receptor. This is an interesting problem in many respects, but most intriguing are the observed differences in delivery efficiency in vivo compared with protein-free in vitro conditions. In order to understand possible situations that the nanoparticle will face in a protein-rich biological environment, we will first describe the formation of a protein corona and thereafter discuss potential perturbations of the delivery systems when moving from in vitro testing to in vivo applications. We emphasize the role of mathematical modeling in optimizing the design of functionalized nanoparticles to achieve high success of delivery.
