With the rapid advancement of Digital Twins (DTs) technologies, they have emerged as viable solutions for enhancing the control and optimization of thermal power combustion processes. This paper presents a pioneering approach that leverages DTs to revolutionize the combustion process control system within thermal power generating units. Focused on bridging the physical and digital realms, our research establishes DTs of the combustion process control system (CPCS), situated within the Networked Control System Laboratory (NCSLab). We propose a novel five-dimensional (5D) DTs model encompassing the physical, data, service, connection, and virtual models, thereby facilitating a comprehensive fusion of physical and digital information. By analyzing the demands and technical intricacies of the combustion process control system, we design and implement a virtual 3D model, enriching the visualization and analytical capabilities of the DT environment. Furthermore, through controlled experiments on the combustion process and rigorous comparison with offline simulations, we validate the efficacy and feasibility of our approach. Importantly, our research opens avenues for future exploration, particularly in harnessing industrial real-time data to drive the virtual 3D model. Through the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques such as Deep Learning, we elevate the capabilities of our DT framework. This enhanced predictive analytics, dynamic optimization, human–machine interaction, and virtual model realism. This research contributes to the advancement of DT technology in the context of thermal power plants and holds promise for driving innovation and efficiency across diverse industrial sectors.

Currently, medical technology is developing rapidly and more medical problems are being solved. However, the shortage of medical resources and the high cost of medical care have become severe medical problems in response to the needs of patients. The continuous improvement of medical experience and quality is one of the most critical issues and is widely valued. The metaverse is an emerging digital space that integrates all kinds of technologies, including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, internet technology, blockchain and digital twin, etc. These technologies can ensure an immersive experience in the metaverse for humans to complete various tasks efficiently. Many fields, including video games, industrial production and medical service, have started to pay attention to the application of the metaverse. In the medical field, medical personnel can use the metaverse to achieve efficient diagnosis, education and treatments. And the interaction between medical personnel and patients in digital space can be strong. In this paper, we review the technologies and the applications of the metaverse and explore the potential of the metaverse in healthcare from several application scenarios. Based on this, the current challenges are analyzed and the possible solutions are proposed as the future direction of medical metaverse.

Smart factories represent the fusion of a myriad of technologies and business approaches to production in manufacturing. In its fully-optimized form, smart factories can evolve to be adaptable systems that can enable continuous improvements of processes and optimize supply chain planning.

In this chapter, we explore the convergence and fusion of various technologies to describe the Factory of the Future. We detail how manufacturing will be transformed in the digital era through technologies that have defined it such as AI, IoT, and Machine Learning to form the Digital Twin and the emergence of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). We analyze the shifts in manufacturing practices, and illustrate several key factors that will shape the future manufacturing environment such as manufacturing operations, Lean Production principles, advanced prototype modelling, IIoT, and the use of integrated manufacturing analytics and the transformation of value chains to value network. We conclude with our thoughts on sustainable innovation and the workforce of the future with increasing scarcity of proficient IR4.0 professionals to support and build the future.

The concept of a digital twin came from the engineering, industrial, and manufacturing domains to create virtual objects or machines that could inform the design and development of real objects. This idea is appealing for precision medicine where digital twins of patients could help inform healthcare decisions. We have developed a methodology for generating and using digital twins for clinical outcome prediction. We introduce a new approach that combines synthetic data and network science to create digital twins (i.e. SynTwin) for precision medicine. First, our approach starts by estimating the distance between all subjects based on their available features. Second, the distances are used to construct a network with subjects as nodes and edges defining distance less than the percolation threshold. Third, communities or cliques of subjects are defined. Fourth, a large population of synthetic patients are generated using a synthetic data generation algorithm that models the correlation structure of the data to generate new patients. Fifth, digital twins are selected from the synthetic patient population that are within a given distance defining a subject community in the network. Finally, we compare and contrast community-based prediction of clinical endpoints using real subjects, digital twins, or both within and outside of the community. Key to this approach are the digital twins defined using patient similarity that represent hypothetical unobserved patients with patterns similar to nearby real patients as defined by network distance and community structure. We apply our SynTwin approach to predicting mortality in a population-based cancer registry (n=87,674) from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program from the National Cancer Institute (USA). Our results demonstrate that nearest network neighbor prediction of mortality in this study is significantly improved with digital twins (AUROC=0.864, 95% CI=0.857-0.872) over just using real data alone (AUROC=0.791, 95% CI=0.781-0.800). These results suggest a network-based digital twin strategy using synthetic patients may add value to precision medicine efforts.
