This paper reviews the work carried out in a wide variety of scientific programmes with particular reference to broad beam PIXE and elemental mapping. The paper is illustrated with results from studies in Biomonitoring, Environmental Health and Human Diseases. In mammals and especially in humans, pollutants can be inhaled, ingested or contact mucosa and skin and be internalized, eventually entering the circulation and accumulating in tissues. Persistent exposure to environmental contaminants is known to cause pathologies that become chronic and debilitating. Human diseases often influence the amount of essential trace element in tissues and organs. Thus, organic fluids, organs and tissues, when accessible, may give significant data on the individual physiological status. Relating clinical, functional and morphological changes with variations in the elemental contents and other biochemical indicators, can significantly contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms of disease and toxicity risks of certain pollutants.
We consider a standard susceptible–infected–susceptible (SIS) model to study the behaviors of steady states of epidemic spreading in small-world networks. Using analytical methods and large scale simulations, we recover the usual epidemic behavior with a critical threshold λc below which infectious diseases die out. For the spreading rate λ far above λc, it was found that the density of infected individuals ρ as a function of λ has the property ρ≈f(K)(lnλ-lnλc).
We study two kinds of weighted networks, weighted small-world (WSW) and weighted scale-free (WSF). The weight wij of a link between nodes i and j in the network is defined as the product of endpoint node degrees; that is wij =(ki kj)θ. In contrast to adding weights to links when networks are being constructed, we only consider weights depending on the "popularity" of the nodes represented by their connectivity. It was found that both weighted networks have broad distributions on the characterization of the link weight, the vertex strength, and the average shortest path length. Furthermore, as a survey of the model, the epidemic spreading process in both weighted networks was studied based on the standard susceptible-infected (SI) model. The spreading velocity reaches a peak very quickly after the infection outbreaks and an exponential decay was found in the long time propagation.
We discuss the role that synchrotron light sources, such as SESAME, could play in improving the socioeconomic conditions in developing countries. After providing a brief description of a synchrotron light source, we discuss the important role that they played in the development of several economically emerging countries. Then we describe the state of synchrotron science in South Africa and that country’s leadership role in founding the African Light Source initiative. Next, we highlight a new initiative called Lightsources for Africa, the Americas & Middle East Project, which is a global initiative led by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and the International Union of Crystallography, with initial funding provided by the International Council for Science. Finally, we comment on a new technology called the multibend achromat that has launched a new paradigm for the design of synchrotron light sources that should be attractive for construction in developing countries.
The aim of the present paper is to state a simplified nonlinear mathematical model to describe the dynamics of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The design of the mathematical model is described in terms of four categories susceptible (S)S), infected (I)I), treatment (T)T) and recovered (R)R), i.e. SITR model with fractals parameters. These days there are big controversy on if is needed to apply confinement measure to the population of the word or if the infection must develop a natural stabilization sharing with it our normal life (like USA or Brazil administrations claim). The aim of our study is to present different scenarios where we draw the evolution of the model in four different cases depending on the contact rate between people. We show that if no confinement rules are applied the stabilization of the infection arrives around 300 days affecting a huge number of population. On the contrary with a contact rate small, due to confinement and social distancing rules, the stabilization of the infection is reached earlier.
