The Effects of Cancer Therapy on Gonadal Function and Fertility

Effective treatment and survival are the prime focus of oncologists and patients with cancer. With longer survival for many patients, the preservation or restoration of the opportunity to have biological children is an important aspect of their management. Impaired fertility can be the result of the cancer or its treatment. In women delay in the opportunity to conceive caused by cancer or treatment may be a significant contribution to their distress. Adult males have the option of sperm cryopreservation, but this may not be possible for adolescent boys and is not available for pre-pubertal boys. Embryo cryopreservation is the most successful option for women with a male partner. Mature oocyte or ovarian tissue cryopreservation currently provides only a slim opportunity of a later pregnancy for single women and prepubertal girls.
