Narrow Results

We present evidence that multigrid works for wave equations in disordered systems, e.g. in the presence of gauge fields, no matter how strong the disorder, but one needs to introduce a "neural computations" point of view into large scale simulations: First, the system must learn how to do the simulations efficiently, then do the simulation (fast). The method can also be used to provide smooth interpolation kernels which are needed in multigrid Monte Carlo updates.

In this paper we consider an open string attached to a Dp-brane, in the presence of the pp-wave and background gauge fields. The effects of the string mass on the open string propagator, open string metric and the noncommutativity parameter are studied. Some free matrices appear in the propagator and in the open string variables. The symmetries of the string propagator and consistency with the zero mass case put some restrictions on these matrices.

We consider Wong's equations for a particle with a continuous mass spectrum in a random Yang–Mills field approximating the quantum field at finite temperature. We show that particle time evolution can be approximated by a relativistic diffusion. Kubo's generator of the relativistic diffusion is defined as an expectation value of the square of the Liouville operator.

Much of arithmetic geometry is concerned with the study of principal bundles. They occur prominently in the arithmetic of elliptic curves and, more recently, in the study of the Diophantine geometry of curves of higher genus. In particular, the geometry of moduli spaces of principal bundles holds the key to an effective version of Faltings’ theorem on finiteness of rational points on curves of genus at least 2. The study of arithmetic principal bundles includes the study of Galois representations, the structures linking motives to automorphic forms according to the Langlands program. In this paper, we give a brief introduction to the arithmetic geometry of principal bundles with emphasis on some elementary analogies between arithmetic moduli spaces and the constructions of quantum field theory.

A non-Abelian theory of fermions interacting with gauge bosons, the constrained system, is studied. The equations of motion for a singular system are obtained as total differential equations in many variables. The integrability conditions are investigated, and the set of equations of motion is integrable. The Senjanovic and the canonical methods are used to quantize the system, and the integration is taken over the canonical phase space coordinates.

A general coordinate invariant theory is constructed where confinement of gauge fields and gauge dynamics in general is governed by the spontaneous symmetry breaking (s.s.b.) of scale invariance. The model uses two measures of integration in the action, the standard where g is the determinant of the metric and another measure Φ independent of the metric. To implement scale invariance, a dilaton field is introduced. Using the first-order formalism, curvature (ΦR and ) terms, gauge field term ( and ) and dilaton kinetic terms are introduced in a conformally invariant way. Exponential potentials for the dilaton break down (softly) the conformal invariance down to global scale invariance, which also suffers s.s.b. after integrating the equations of motion. The model has a well-defined flat space limit. As a result of the s.s.b. of scale invariance phases with different vacuum energy density appear. Inside the bags, that is in the regions of larger vacuum energy density, the gauge dynamics is normal, that is nonconfining, while for the region of smaller vacuum energy density, the gauge field dynamics is confining. Likewise, the dynamics of scalars, like would be Goldstone bosons, is suppressed inside the bags.

In the recently proposed generalization of the Yang–Mills theory, the group of gauge transformation gets essentially enlarged. This enlargement involves a mixture of the internal and space–time symmetries. The resulting group is an extension of the Poincaré group with infinitely many generators which carry internal and space–time indices.

The matrix representations of the extended Poincaré generators are expressible in terms of Pauli–Lubanski vector in one case and in terms of its invariant derivative in another. In the later case the generators of the gauge group are transversal to the momentum and are projecting the non-Abelian tensor gauge fields into the transversal plane, keeping only their positively definite spacelike components.

A ternary gauge field theory is explicitly constructed based on a totally antisymmetric ternary-bracket structure associated with a 3-Lie algebra. It is shown that the ternary infinitesimal gauge transformations do obey the key closure relations [δ₁, δ₂] = δ₃. Invariant actions for the 3-Lie algebra-valued gauge fields and scalar fields are displayed. We analyze and point out the difficulties in formulating a nonassociative octonionic ternary gauge field theory based on a ternary-bracket associated with the octonion algebra and defined earlier by Yamazaki. It is shown that a Yang–Mills-like quadratic action is invariant under global (rigid) transformations involving the Yamazaki ternary octonionic bracket, and that there is closure of these global (rigid) transformations based on constant antisymmetric parameters Λ^ab = - Λ^ba. Promoting the latter parameters to space–time dependent ones Λ^ab(x^μ) allows one to build an octonionic ternary gauge field theory when one imposes gauge covariant constraints on the latter gauge parameters leading to field-dependent gauge parameters and nonlinear gauge transformations. In this fashion one does not spoil the gauge invariance of the quadratic action under this restricted set of gauge transformations and which are tantamount to space–time dependent scalings (homothecy) of the gauge fields.

We study spherically symmetric solutions of an SO(5) Chern–Simons–Yang–Mills–Higgs system in 3+1 dimensions. The Chern–Simons densities are defined in terms of both Yang–Mills fields and a five-component isomultiplet Higgs. The SO(3) × SO(2) solutions are analyzed in a systematic way, by employing numerical methods. These finite energy configurations possess both electric and magnetic global charges, differing radically, however, from Julia–Zee dyons. When two or more of these Chern–Simons densities are present in the Lagrangian, solutions with vanishing electric charge but nonvanishing electrostatic potential may exist.

We perform the perturbative generation of the higher-derivative Chern–Simons contribution to the effective action in the three-dimensional QED at zero and finite temperatures. In the latter case, we show that as the temperature goes to infinity this contribution vanishes. However, as expected, as the temperature goes to zero only the covariant part survives. The noncovariant part contributes only in intermediate temperatures where it presents a maximum.

The aim of this paper consists in the investigation of both first- and second-order dynamics for a special massless tensor gauge field of degree $(k+1)$. Geometrically, this can be interpreted as a bosonic (1-)form-valued $k$-form that, in specific space–time dimensions, describes either spin-1 or spin 2 gauge fields. The idea of using multi-forms in describing general tensor gauge fields is not new. It was previously investigated at Lagrangian level${}^{1\text{–}3}$ where was displayed interesting exotic gauge theories. In arbitrary Minkowski space–times, the considered geometric object combines two tensor gauge fields with mixed symmetry namely a $(k+1)$-form and a massless tensor gauge field with the mixed symmetry $(k,1)$. Concretely, we first approach the bosonic (1-)form-valued $k$-form from the Hamiltonian perspective, Dirac analysis revealing new compelling gauge structures. Second, we construct the Lagrangian first-order formulations for the considered geometric ingredient.

The Hamiltonian of a nonrelativistic particle coupled to non-Abelian gauge fields is defined to construct a non-Abelian gauge theory. The Hamiltonian which includes isospin as a dynamical variable dictates the dynamics of the particle and isospin according to the Poisson bracket that incorporates the Lie algebraic structure of isospin. The generalized Poisson bracket allows us to derive Wong’s equations, which describe the dynamics of isospin, and the homogeneous (sourceless) equations for non-Abelian gauge fields by following Feynman’s proof of the homogeneous Maxwell equations.

It is shown that the derivation of the homogeneous equations for non-Abelian gauge fields using the generalized Poisson bracket does not require that Wong’s equations be defined in the time-axial gauge, which was used with the commutation relation. The homogeneous equations derived by using the commutation relation are not Galilean and Lorentz invariant. However, by using the generalized Poisson bracket, it can be shown that the homogeneous equations are not only Galilean and Lorentz invariant but also gauge independent. In addition, the quantum ordering ambiguity that arises from using the commutation relation can be avoided when using the Poisson bracket.

From the homogeneous equations, which define the “electric field” and “magnetic field” in terms of non-Abelian gauge fields, we construct the gauge and Lorentz invariant Lagrangian density and derive the inhomogeneous equations that describe the interaction of non-Abelian gauge fields with a particle.

In this paper, we give a general review on the application of ergodic theory to the investigation of dynamics of the Yang–Mills gauge fields and of the gravitational systems, as well as its application in the Monte Carlo method and fluid dynamics. In ergodic theory the maximally chaotic dynamical systems (MCDS) can be defined as dynamical systems that have nonzero Kolmogorov entropy. The hyperbolic dynamical systems that fulfill the Anosov C-condition belong to the MCDS insofar as they have exponential instability of their phase trajectories and positive Kolmogorov entropy. It follows that the C-condition defines a rich class of MCDS that span over an open set in the space of all dynamical systems. The large class of Anosov–Kolmogorov MCDS is realized on Riemannian manifolds of negative sectional curvatures and on high-dimensional tori. The interest in MCDS is rooted in the attempts to understand the relaxation phenomena, the foundations of the statistical mechanics, the appearance of turbulence in fluid dynamics, the nonlinear dynamics of Yang–Mills field and gravitating $N$-body systems as well as black hole thermodynamics. Our aim is to investigate classical- and quantum-mechanical properties of MCDS and their role in the theory of fundamental interactions.

We propose a new approach of many-particle quantum hydrodynamics to describe a system of interacting magnetic skyrmions in the external fields. The model is based on the description of skyrmions as a fluid of point-like particles. The equations of many-particle quantum hydrodynamics are obtained for a system of skyrmions with induced dipole moments and charges. The dipole–dipole interaction between dipoles and the Coulomb interaction between charges are taken into account. The influence of quantum effects in the form of the Bohm quantum potential is obtained. The contribution of Magnus effect to the dynamics of dipoles current density is predicted. The electron–skyrmion interactions are considered, based on a two-fluid model of quantum hydrodynamics with separate description of spin-up and spin-down electrons on the background of skyrmion lattice. The proposed model can be further used to study the dynamical effects in a system of skyrmions in the external fields.

It is well known that a typical Yang–Mills Gauge Field is mediated by massless Bosons. It is only through a symmetry breaking mechanism, as in the Salam–Weinberg model that the quanta of such an interaction field acquire a mass in the usual theory. Here, we demonstrate that without taking recourse to the usual symmetry breaking mechanism, it is still possible to achieve this, given a noncommutative geometrical underpinning for spacetime.

We consider the question of bags and confinement in the framework of a theory which uses two volume elements and Φd⁴x, where Φ is a metric independent density. For scale invariance a dilaton field Φ is considered. This is an overview of applications of the harmonic variables in supersymmetric mechanics, with focusing on some latest results.

An octonionic ternary gauge field theory is explicitly constructed based on a ternary-bracket defined earlier by Yamazaki. The ternary infinitesimal gauge transformations do obey the key closure relations [δ₁, δ₂] = δ₃. An invariant action for the octonionic-valued gauge fields is displayed after solving the previous problems in formulating a nonassociative octonionic ternary gauge field theory. These octonionic ternary gauge field theories constructed here deserve further investigation. In particular, to study their relation to Yang–Mills theories based on the G₂ group which is the automorphism group of the octonions and their relevance to noncommutative and nonassociative geometry.

Semiclassical systems being symmetric under Lie group are studied. A state of a semiclassical system may be viewed as a set (X, f) of a classical state X and a quantum state f in the external classical background X. Therefore, the set of all semiclassical states may be considered as a bundle (semiclassical bundle). Its base {X} is the set of all classical states, while a fiber is a Hilbert space ℱ_X of quantum states in the external background X. Symmetry transformation of a semiclassical system may be viewed as an automorphism of the semiclassical bundle. Automorphism groups can be investigated with the help of sections of the bundle: to any automorphism of the bundle one assigns a transformation of section of the bundle. Infinitesimal properties of transformations of sections are investigated; correspondence between Lie groups and Lie algebras is discussed. For gauge theories, some points of the semiclassical bundle are identified: a gauge group acts on the bundle. For this case, only gauge-invariant sections of the semiclassical bundle are taken into account.

In this paper we discuss various geometric aspects related to the Schrödinger and the Pauli equations. First we resume the Madelung–Bohm hydrodynamical approach to quantum mechanics and recall the Hamiltonian structure of the Schrödinger equation. The probability current provides an equivariant moment map for the group $G=\mathrm{\text{sDiff}}(R^3)$ of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of $R^3$ (rapidly approaching the identity at infinity) and leads to a current algebra of Rasetti–Regge type. The moment map picture is then extended, mutatis mutandis, to the Pauli equation and to generalized Schrödinger equations of the Pauli–Thomas type. A gauge theoretical reinterpretation of all equations is obtained via the introduction of suitable Maurer–Cartan gauge fields and it is then related to Weyl geometric and pilot wave ideas. A general framework accommodating Aharonov–Bohm and Aharonov–Casher effects is presented within the gauge approach. Furthermore, a kind of holomorphic geometric quantization can be performed and yields natural “coherent state” representations of $G$. The relationship with the covariant phase space and density manifold approaches is then outlined. Comments on possible extensions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations, on Fisher-information theoretic aspects and on stochastic mechanics are finally made.
