ANALYSIS OF AN ABSORPTION CHILLER DRIVEN BY THE HEAT RECOVERY ON A SOLID OXIDE FUEL CELL

This paper studies an absorption machine driven by the heat recovered from a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC). The absorption unit was first evaluated by a cycle analysis determining the sensitivity to the main boundary conditions and to the internal parameters. Then a specific simulation code of all the different devices of the absorption machine was developed to evaluate the performance and size of the unit together with its operating condition limits.

PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF A SIMULTANEOUS HEATING AND COOLING HEAT PUMP IN THE HEAT RECOVERY MODE

The cooling load in winter is significant in buildings and hotels because of the usage of office equipments and the high efficiency of wall insulation. Hence, the development of a multi-heat pump that can cover heating and cooling simultaneously for each indoor unit is required. In this study, the performance of a simultaneous heating and cooling heat pump was investigated in the heat recovery mode (HR mode). The system adopted a variable speed compressor using R-410A with four indoor units and one outdoor unit. In the HR mode, the capacity and COP were improved as compared with those in the cooling or heating mode because the waste heat in the outdoor unit was utilized as useful heat in the indoor units. However, energy imbalance between heating and cooling capacities of each indoor unit was observed in the 2H–1C HR mode. Therefore, the performance of the system in the 2H–1C HR mode was enhanced by controlling refrigerant flow rate through the outdoor unit.

NUMERICAL SIMULATION AND PARAMETRIC STUDIES FOR EVALUATION OF BALANCED VENTILATION AND EARTH AIR EXCHANGERS SYSTEM COUPLED TO A DOMESTIC BUILDING

In this study, we analyze the impact of ventilation heat recovery with the heating and cooling potential of earth air heat exchanger in real climatic conditions in domestic buildings in the Middle Atlas region. In our case study, we calculate the primary energy used by a domestic building built as per the conventional house design parameters required by the Moroccan regulation. We use climate data for the city of Fes in Northern Moroccan.

Three system configurations were considered. The first was the mechanical extract ventilation system both with and without heat recovery. The second was the mechanical extract ventilation system with earth to air heat exchanger system (EAHEX), and the third system was the mechanical balanced ventilation system coupled with EAHEX system.

Primary energy use strongly influences natural resources efficiency and the environmental impacts of energy supply activities. In this study we explore the primary energy implications of the mechanical balanced ventilation system coupled with the EAHEX system in residential buildings.

The results of this study shows that the use of a balanced ventilation system, with a high efficiency instead of a mechanical extract ventilation system, decreases the final and primary energy consumption. Moreover, it decreases or increases the CO2 emission depending on the primary energy sources.

Heat Recovery Time of Adsorption Cooling System

In this study, a two-dimensional numerical model of finned-tube type adsorbers was developed and used to examine heat recovery time to improve the performance of an adsorption cooling system. The optimal heat recovery time, which resulted in the highest COP, was determined for a range of heat source temperatures (60–90C) and cycle times (600–1200s). The introduced heat recovery process enhanced COP, but also reduced SCP. This penalty became more serious when the hot water temperature was low and cycle time was short, which serves as a guideline for when heat recovery should be adopted in a given operating condition.

Improvement of COP with Heat Recovery Scheme for Solar Adsorption Cooling System

Heat recovery ensures optimum usage of the collected energy, and thus, minimizes heat loss for a solar adsorption chiller. Two-bed adsorption chiller with conventional single stage, run by direct solar coupling with heat recovery, has been studied mathematically. In a heat recovery adsorption refrigeration system, to facilitate heat transfer, heat transfer fluid is distributed between two adsorbers maintaining the same mass flow rate. There is no mass transfer between system components during this phase. It is a semi-continuous system performed between two adsorption beds. After completion of desorption/condensation mode, heat transfer fluid is allowed to circulate between the heated desorber and the cooled adsorber. This process distributes some heat of the desorption bed to the adsorber preparing it for the next preheating mode where heat transfer between them is done adiabatically. Consequently, the performance has been checked and a satisfactory increase in the Coefficient of Performance (COP) (approximately 15%) has been detected in the calculated results for the heat recovery operation. It is also observed that the heat recovery process enhances the working hour and overall performances of the solar heat driven adsorption chiller.

    Industrial Integration: A Literature Review

Industrial integration becomes more and more attractive to practitioners in industry, and draws a lot of attention from academia as well. However, the discussion of industrial integration is inconsistent, diversified, and targeted at different prospects. This paper attempts to address a systematic and comprehensive review on 74 articles about industrial integration from 2006 to 2016 in the SCI/SSCI database, in order to present an overview to researchers and practitioners. We will clarify current trends and main findings, and framework, strategies, and case analyses as well. The selected papers are diversified into seven research potential outlets. Summarization and research directions for each outlet are examined. Depending on the selected articles, European countries are the major contributed countries focusing on practical or technological issues regarding industrial integration.
