Ganoderma lucidum is a herbal medicine commonly used in oriental countries as a remedy for treating various medical conditions. In this controlled study, we evaluated the safety and tolerance of oral administration of Ganoderma lucidum in 16 human volunteers who received 2 grams of the extract or placebo twice daily for 10 consecutive days. During the study, information from subjective questionnaires were obtained, electrocardiograms, complete blood counts, blood chemistry analysis and urinalysis were performed. In addition, blood tests reflecting immunity were done. Our data showed that compared to placebo group, no adverse effects were observed after the extract intake. Although there were no obvious changes in CD4, CD8, and CD19 levels after the extract, CD56 cell count increased during the study and returned to baseline 10 days after the herbal intake. However, due to relatively high variability and small sample size, this CD56 increase did not achieve statistical significance, and remains to be re-evaluated in the future. It appears that an additional long-term safety and tolerance trial with herbal dose-escalating design is warranted.

The Potential of Saving Human Lives with Hibernation.

In order to investigate the search performance and strategies of nonhuman primates, two macaque monkeys were trained to search for a target template among differently oriented distractors in both free-gaze and fixed-gaze viewing conditions (overt and covert search). In free-gaze search, reaction times (RT) and eye movements revealed the theoretically predicted characteristics of exhaustive and self-terminating serial search, with certain exceptions that are also observed in humans. RT was linearly related to the number of fixations but not necessarily to the number of items on display. Animals scanned the scenes in a nonrandom manner spending notably more time on targets and items inspected last (just before reaction). The characteristics of free-gaze search were then compared with search performance under fixed gaze (covert search) and with the performance of four human subjects tested in similar experiments. By and large the performance characteristics of both groups were similar; monkeys were slightly faster, and humans more accurate. Both species produced shorter RT in fixed-gaze than in free-gaze search. But while RT slopes of the human subjects still showed the theoretically predicted difference between hits and rejections, slopes of the two monkeys appeared to collapse. Despite considerable priming and short-term learning when similar tests were continuously repeated, no substantial long-term training effects were seen when test conditions and set sizes were frequently varied. Altogether, the data reveal many similarities between human and monkey search behavior but indicate that search is not necessarily restricted to exclusively serial processes.

The accumulation of genetic alterations causes cancers. Since this accumulation takes time, the incidence of most cancers is thought to increase exponentially with age. However, careful measurements of the age-specific incidence show that the specific incidence for many forms of cancer rises with age to a maximum, and then decreases. This decrease in the age-specific incidence with age is an anomaly. Understanding this anomaly should lead to a better understanding of how tumors develop and grow. Here we derive the shape of the age-specific incidence, showing that it should follow the shape of a Weibull distribution. Measurements indicate that the age-specific incidence for colon cancer does indeed follow a Weibull distribution. This analysis leads to the interpretation that for colon cancer two subpopulations exist in the general population: a susceptible population and an immune population. Colon tumors will only occur in the susceptible population. This analysis is consistent with the developmental origins of disease hypothesis and generalizable to many other common forms of cancer.

BACKGROUND: Male infertility is a global health challenge and the prevalence is increasing, particularly in the so-called infertility belt of sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria. The etiologies are complex and multifactorial. The impact of thyroid disorders on male reproductive health is often overlooked. This unrecognized link can significantly affect sperm quality, quantity, and overall fertility. The involvement of thyroid dysfunction in male infertility is now increasingly reported, but thyroid hormone evaluation is rarely determined in the laboratory work-up during fertility evaluations. The aim of this review is to highlight the involvement of thyroid hormones in the regulation of reproductive function, how thyroid dysfunction induces male infertility, diagnosis, and future directions for research in thyroid-associated male infertility.

METHODS: Scientific information reviewed for this purpose was obtained from Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, and other search engines.

RESULTS: Studies have indicated that thyroid dysfunction in male infertility is critical to spermatogenesis. Any disruption in the interaction between thyroid hormones and the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis may lead to alterations of the fine hormonal balance needed for optimal reproduction and a spectrum of endocrinopathies. Thyroid dysfunctions have an adverse impact on fertility and male reproductive organs.

CONCLUSION: The need to focus on how specific thyroid-related interventions will improve semen quality and if routine thyroid hormone evaluations be included in the diagnostic workup for male infertility are discussed.

This paper presents a comprehensive empirical analysis of the factors affecting growth and psychological development of over 100 infants from birth to age 6 months in the Embu region of Kenya. The analysis was divided into four parts. First, infants' birth weight, and length and head circumference as measured few days after birth, were modeled using multiple regression models. Maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), gestation period, and parity were associated with infants' anthropometric measurements (P < 0.05). Second, the scores on seven clusters of the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale were explained by health and socioeconomic indicators. While the models had poor predictive power, the scores were comparable to those reported in the literature for Puerto Rican and African American infants. The third part of the analysis modeled infant growth between 1–6 months by analyzing longitudinal data on length, head circumference, and weight. Dynamic models were postulated for the effects of nutritional, socioeconomic, and environmental factors and morbidity on anthropometric variables. The results showed that infants' calcium intakes were positively associated with length (P < 0.05). Maternal BMI and hemoglobin concentration were positively associated with infant weight (P < 0.05); infant morbidity was negatively associated with weight (P < 0.05). Lastly, the infants' scores at 6 months on the Bayley Motor Scale and on eight items from the Bayley Infant Behavior Record were explained using anthropometric, socioeconomic, and psychological variables. The infants' arm circumference and intake of protein were significant predictors of scores on the Bayley Motor Scale. In addition, time spent by the mother talking to the infant was positively associated with the scores on the Bayley Infant Behavior Record. The empirical results have implications for identifying vulnerable children in developing countries.

XtremeCT is a three-dimensional (3D) high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HRpQCT) device that enables the acquisition of both volumetric bone mineral density (BMD) and bone structure. This chapter provides general information on the specific features of XtremeCT, and a guide to perform XtremeCT measurements using standard measurement protocols for in vivo human application. Its potential for studying large animals in vivo and ex vivo is also mentioned.
