    The Application of Precision Public Health to Vaccinology

    The Precision Public Health Asia Conference was held on 12 July 2023, where a workshop on Precision Public Health in Vaccinology was conducted. This paper is a post-workshop report of the topics discussed, as well as expanding on the discussions that took place. Precision public health in vaccinology has the aim of facilitating the use of the right vaccine in the right population at the right time. The concept is nuanced and requires cooperation between governments, stakeholders, healthcare professionals and the public to be executed successfully. We explore the instances in which precision public health has already been employed in vaccinology, and further expand on the potential use cases, concerns as well as considerations to be made in future programs. Recurring themes gathered from the workshop discussions such as the development process, data in vaccination modeling, geographically targeting vaccine implementation and inter-disciplinary communication especially when there are different perspectives were looked at through a closer lens. There are many considerations to deploy precision public health in a well-executed vaccinology program, and we have highlighted the areas that need further innovation and improvement to achieve real-world public health impact.

    CONVENTIONAL ECONOMIC THEORY — A CRITIQUE HIGHLIGHTING FLAWS IN AMERICAN STYLE CAPITALISM

    For 200 years, we have lived with capitalism in its American style forged easy access to raw materials. Despite entering an era of scarcities, economics is still anchored in growth and distribution theories reflecting the world of plenty. Production theory does not recognize the significance of sharing of knowledge and group behavior introduced by ICT. Consumption theory is still about buying 'more', neglecting the element of uncertainty. Competition has been eradicated and replaced by a limited number of gigantic corporations. Only recently has economics started to go interdisciplinary to incorporate psychology and brain research to explain behavior when confronted with economic choices and the difference between individual and group behavior.

          Knowledge Management's Relevance to Library and Information Science: An Interdisciplinary Approach

          The study aims at exploring the relevancy of knowledge management (KM) to library and information science (LIS). Besides the review of relevant literature, the study has conducted an online survey of KM education programs offered by different schools of the world. An interdisciplinary approach of KM education is analysed to find its link with LIS. After a random search of KM education programs, 30 graduate programs are investigated to identify leading academic and professional disciplines contributing to the promotion of KM education and research, and also to examine the extent and scope of KM education with special reference to LIS schools. The survey finds that the highest number of KM graduate programs originated from LIS/Information Management (IM) followed by computing/engineering and business and management. The convergent course titles and wide range of KM skills and competencies clearly indicate its interdisciplinary nature. Finally, the paper explores some areas where both LIS and KM can contribute to each other and encourages KM implication in LIS education and library practices.

          INNOVATION CHAMPIONS’ ACTIVITIES AND INFLUENCES IN ORGANISATIONS — A LITERATURE REVIEW

          Innovation champions often play a pivotal role in facilitating new ideas and technology-based innovations within organisations. The rise of digital technology has led to radical changes in the nature of innovation and calls for an assessment of existing knowledge on innovation champions’ activities and their influence on organisations and networks. This paper provides a systematic, interdisciplinary literature review on innovation champions from an individual and organisational perspective. Based on a search of 149 high-quality journals and conference proceedings, we identified 92 articles as relevant and synthesised prior knowledge on innovation champions. We find that, whereas innovation champions’ activities have been explored in detail, research on innovation champions’ influence, especially on networks, has been limited. Furthermore, we identify research gaps with respect to differences in innovation champions’ activities at distinct stages of the innovation lifecycle and the formation of innovation champions’ networks.

          Learning to Expect Surprise: Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria, and Beyond

          Extreme events often bring unexpected situations and impacts, as the sequence of hurricanes and other natural disasters in summer and fall 2017 demonstrated. To reduce the risks associated with such events, many have focused on reducing uncertainty in prediction or reducing vulnerability. Although both are worthy goals, we suggest that the research community should also be focusing on the nature of surprise itself, to investigate the role of surprise in extreme events and its implications. Surprise arises when reality differs from people’s expectations. Multiple factors contribute to creating surprise, including the dynamic nature of natural and human systems, the limitations of scientific knowledge and prediction, and the ways that people interpret and manage risks, not to mention climate variability and change. We argue that surprise is an unavoidable component of weather and climate disasters — one that we must acknowledge, learn to anticipate, and incorporate into risk assessment and management efforts. In sum, although it may seem paradoxical, we should be learning how to expect surprise.

          Chapter 14: UCLA Sustainable LA Grand Challenge: Innovatively Applying Research to Create the First Sustainable Megacity

          In response to the sustainability challenges that the Los Angeles region is facing due to the climate crisis and an increasing population, UCLA launched the first university-led Grand Challenge in 2013 — the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge, thriving in a hotter Los Angeles. The long-term goals of this Grand Challenge are to transition Los Angeles County to 100% renewable energy, 100% local water, and enhanced ecosystem health by the year 2050. UCLA is leading this effort by coordinating research across disciplines, educating and training students to be the next-generation of problem solvers, and engaging stakeholders to create policy recommendations, technology breakthroughs, and partnerships that result in scalable urban sustainability solutions. Los Angeles County’s diversity in sustainability challenges, landscapes, and cultures make solutions implemented in Los Angeles relevant for megacities across the globe.

          Vocational University Students Study in General Physics Laboratory to Increase Generic Science Skills

          In this study we evaluate the generic science skills performance for vocational university freshman through the practical learning in general physics laboratory. Generic science skills will help vocational students to combine the science knowledge and professional skills. The learning design of Physics experiments for vocational university students is not only for theoretic knowledge but also for employability purpose and future interdisciplinary communication. Under the Generative Learning Model, our freshmen are required to prepare themselves for understanding the material information and to study on the generative learning activity. Based on factual knowledge and hands on experience, the freshmen learning in Physics lab make a good approach for their future vocational study.

          Survey Team 4: Interdisciplinary Aspects of the Teaching and Learning of Mathematical Modelling in Mathematics Education Including Relations to the Real World and STEM

          This report presents preliminary results from a survey commissioned for ICME-14 on teaching and learning of mathematical modelling and interdisciplinary mathematics educations. The systematic literature review focusses on how a well-understood relation between mathematics and the real world underpins interdisciplinary work, interdisciplinarity in research and teaching teams, issues and challenges in the relationships among mathematical modelling, mathematics, the real world and interdisciplinarity, and mathematical modelling and a well-understood relation to the real world ensuring mathematical depth in STEM integration.
