Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) refers to a micro-vascular complication causing vision problems in diabetic patients. It is a serious global public health issue that damages the retinal blood vessels and leaves a large number of patients with loss of vision. Micro-aneurysms, hemorrhages, macular edema, and exudates are some of the lesions used to diagnose it. When detected early, Diabetic Retinopathy can be treated well with precise identification of lesions. Computer-aided diagnosis refers to the approaches used to extract specific features associated with the disease by using image processing filters. Some Machine Learning tools, especially the ones well-suited to data analysis applications are particularly useful. This paper primarily focuses on a comparative performance evaluation of many machine learning and deep learning-based techniques applied for the diagnosis of this vision ailment in diabetic patients.

Oral cancer becomes the most disastrous ailment that affects the oral cavity parts of the mouth. Oral cancer diagnosis is the main challenge in the medical field. It becomes expensive and less capable of classifying oral cancer. In some cases, it may cause unnecessary morbidity and mortality. Recently, the detection of malignant and premalignant oral lesions has been a critical process owing to their low image resolution and lower acquisition time. Thus, a novel hybrid deep learning with meta-heuristic-based optimization is proposed. The pre-processing occurs by median filtering and Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE). The CLAHE method is utilized to reduce unwanted noise. Finally, the classification is done by a proposed hybrid-based deep learning model termed as Recurrent Deep Belief Network (RDBN), in which the Deep Belief Network (DBN) is incorporated with the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN). Here, the RDBN helps to increase the performance classification. Furthermore, the hyperparameters of the RDBN model, such as learning rate, epochs and hidden neurons, are tuned using the proposed Hybrid Beetle-Barnacle Swarm Optimization (HBBSO) algorithm, where the Barnacles Mating Optimizer (BMO) is superimposed with Beetle Swarm Optimization (BSO) algorithms. In the given proposed model, the selected features are extracted by the optimization algorithms. Here, the parameters are fine-tuned to get the better optimal solution. From the experimental outcome, the developed model has acquired 5.2% better than PSO-RDBN, 5.6% improved than GWO-RDBN, 3.2% enhanced than BSO-RDBN and 3.5% superior to BMO-RDBN regarding accuracy. Thus, the proposed model achieves higher results for detecting oral cancer with enhanced classification performance than the existing approaches.

Neuroimaging investigation is an essential parameter to detect infarct lesion in stroke patients. Precise detection of brain lesions is an important task related to impaired behavior. In this paper, we aimed to develop an automatic method to segment and classify infarct lesion in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) of brain MRI. The method includes hybrid fuzzy $c$-means (HFCM) clustering in which the structure of $c$-means clustering is modified with rough sets and fuzzy sets to improve the segmentation performance with self-adjusted intensity thresholds. Quantitative evaluation was carried out on 128 MRI slices of brain image collected from ischemic stroke patients at the Department of Radiology, IMS and SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar. The informative statistical features have been extracted using gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and used to classify the types of stroke infarct according to the Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project (OCSP) classification. The parameters such as accuracy, Dice similarity index (DSI) and Jaccard index (JI) were utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method in detecting the stroke lesions. The segmentation method achieved the average accuracy, DSI and JI of 96.8%, 95.8% and 92.2%, respectively, in support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The obtained results are higher in terms of random forest (RF) classification. With a high Dice coefficient of 0.958 and other evaluated parameters, the proposed method outperforms earlier published results.

Automatic analysis of medical images and endoscopic images, in particular, is an attractive research topic in recent years. To achieve this goal, many tasks must be conducted for example lesion detection, segmentation, and classification. However, existing methods for such problems still face challenges due to the spreading characteristic of the lesions as well as some artifacts caused by motion, specularities, low contrast, bubbles, debris, bodily fluid, and blood. As a consequence, single segmentation or detection could not deal with those issues. Besides, although deep learning has achieved impressive results in many tasks, lacking a large annotated dataset could lead to overfitting problems. In this paper, we tackle these issues by taking particular characteristics of lesions of interest and advantages of deep segmentation models into account. We propose a dual-path framework (namely, DCS-UNet) that combines both segmentation and classification. We first segment lesions from the image using U-Net architecture with different encoder backbones (ResNet-50, VGG-16, DenseNet-201). The segmented regions will be then refined in the second path where we classify every patch in the whole image or the Inner or Outer regions extended from the contours given by the segmentation results. For the refinement scheme, we utilize the color-dependent and texture features as doctors’ advice and deploy the support vector machine (SVM) technique to classify a patch into disease region or not. Extensive experiments were conducted on three datasets of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) endoscopic images as GradeM, GradeA, GradeB, which are defined as modified Los Angeles classification. The experimental results show the improvements of the proposed method compared to the single U-Net or a segmentation using the hand-designed features-based scheme. The proposed method improves mDice and mIoU by 0.5% and 0.36% on GradeA dataset, which is the most challenging dataset with ambiguous separations of GERD vs. normal regions, and by 0.82% and 0.81% on GradeM dataset, which is clearer to segment GERD regions. This proposed framework shows the potential to develop a diagnosis assistance system to help endoscopists reduce burden in examining GERD in the future.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. Computer Aided Detection (CADe) has attracted increasing research interest in recent years. Data exploration and lesion detection in medical images are tedious but can be accelerated using computational intelligence. One approach is to adapt and configure recent deep learning-based object detectors from computer vision to detect abnormalities in medical images. This chapter starts with three state-of-the-art object detectors, namely Faster R-CNN, YOLO v2 and Grad-CAM, to determine the location of lesions in Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) of breast. Each individual detector is first tuned through adjusting network hyper-parameters and backbone architectures, in order to maximize Average Precision (AP). Two different integration approaches, namely cascaded and parallel integrations, are then proposed and implemented to improve the AP. The cascaded integration builds on a coarse-to-fine strategy. It uses Grad-CAM to compute coarse locations of bounding boxes for lesions and then applies YOLO v2 or Faster R-CNN as a fine detector. In the parallel integration approach, the detection result is a combination of results from the three detectors, with the aim of reducing missed detections. The integrated deep learning models exhibit enhanced performance on the detection of breast lesions in MRIs.
