The assembled structures of triangular symmetrically shape molecules with three functional groups, trimesic acid (TMA) and melamine, have been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy on Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG) in ambient. Hexagonal porous structures are formed by these molecules and the cavity of the assembled structure becomes bigger when larger molecules are used as building blocks. The cavity within the assembled structure formed by TMA is bigger enough to host guest molecule.

Caged bicyclic phosphate (CBP) and its dimelamine salt (PDS) were synthesized and added to epoxy resins to obtain the flame retarded epoxy resin composites. The flammability of the composites was characterized by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimeter tests. The LOI values of flame retarded composites increase consistently with the increase of flame retardant amounts, and they are almost the same when the loading of CBP is the same as that of PDS, although the phosphorus content of PDS is much lower than that of CBP. The total heat release increases in the order of CBP30/ER < PDS30/ER < PDS15/ER < CBP15/ER, whereas that of specific extinction area is CBP15/ER > CBP30/ER > PDS30/ER ≌ PDS15/ER. PDS exhibits more effective inhibition of oxidation of combustible gases. In the tests of thermogravimetric analyses (TG) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), it is found that the degradation of the composites is influenced greatly by the addition of flame retardants. By scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a thick and tight char-layer is observed for PDS30/ER, resulting from the interaction of nitrogen species with phosphorus species. Therefore, the combination of CBP with melamine in the flame retarded system can improve the flame retardancy greatly.

In this work, highly active graphitic carbon nitride composite photocatalysts with an isotype heterojunction semiconductor structure have been prepared through the molecular composite precursors consisting of urea and melamine. These photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, UV-Vis, BET and transient photocurrent responses. The photodegradation of dyes in aqueous solution under visible-light irradiation has been investigated over carbon nitride photocatalysts consisting of different urea/melamine mass ratios. Further studies by photocurrent indicate that the photosynergistic effect of isotype heterojunction can remarkably enhance the photoinduced interfacial charge transfer, thereby increasing the charge separation during the photocatalytic reaction.

Large specific surface area porous g-C₃N₄ nanosheets were prepared by utilizing acetaldehyde-mediated melamine. The synthetic processes adopted two-step thermal treatments which are in N₂ and then in an air atmosphere. The introduced acetaldehyde made melamine condensation incompletely and generated body defects in g-C₃N₄ when heated in N₂. Further heating in air realized pores formation at sites of body defects, thus increase the specific surface area of g-C₃N₄. Notably, the introduction of acetaldehyde is beneficial to generate high concentration defects, which are active sites for thermal oxidative etching, and increase the yield of g-C₃N₄ by inhibiting the sublimation of melamine. The photocatalytic performance of obtained g-C₃N₄ was evaluated by the degradation of 2-propanol under visible light irradiation ($\lambda >420$nm). The porous g-C₃N₄ exhibits excellent photocatalytic performance than bulk g-C₃N₄. The addition of trace acetaldehyde significantly increased the specific surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity, providing a new idea for the development of simple, low-cost and high active g-C₃N₄ photocatalyst.

MoS₂/g-C₃N₄ (g-C₃N₄ $=$ graphitic carbon nitride) composite is considered as a promising photocatalyst for hydrogen production, while the preparation method still needs to be improved. Herein for the first time, nanosized MoS₃ and melamine were used as starting materials and a facile one-pot calcination method was successfully applied for the synthesis of MoS₂/g-C₃N₄. The physical and photophysical properties of the as-prepared MoS₂/g-C₃N₄ were characterized by XRD, IR, SEM, TEM and XPS techniques. Sensitized by Erythrosin B (EB), the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance of MoS₂/g-C₃N₄ was investigated and the amount of MoS₂ was optimized. An excellent H₂ production activity of 1091.2$\mu \mathrm{\text{mol}}{\mathrm{\text{h}}}^{-1}$ was achieved for 43% MoS₂/g-C₃N₄, which is about 330 times that of pure g-C₃N₄ (3.3$\mu \mathrm{\text{mol}}{\mathrm{\text{h}}}^{-1})$. In addition, its performance was compared with those of three other MoS₂/g-C₃N₄ samples prepared by conventional methods and a possible mechanism of H₂ production was proposed based on the photoluminescence and photoelectrochemical results.

Near infrared microscopy imaging offers the opportunity to explore not only what kinds of chemical species are present at micro-scale level but also where the chemical species would be present. By revealing the spectral and spatial information, the technique can identify and localize any interested component. This study investigates the feasibility of using Near infrared microscopy imaging to detect melamine in soybean meal. The results showed that 6805 cm^-1 is very sensitive for melamine but not for soybean meal, so can be used for univariate analysis. Single wavelength image and peak integration image at 6805 cm^-1 are simple and effective methods to detect the melamine in soybean meal. Furthermore, Principal Component Analysis is applied to detect the melamine in soybean meal.

This research is focused on the sensor properties of pure and X-decorated ($\mathrm{\text{X}}=\mathrm{\text{B}}$, N, P and S) magnesium oxide (Mg${}_{12}$O${}_{12}$) nanocages for melamine (C₃H₆N₆) molecule detection using density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure approach. Comparative adsorption study was carried out on four distinct computational models of hybrid functionals: $\omega$B97XD, PBE0-D3BJ, M062X-D3BJ and DSDPBEP86 with the double-hybrid (DSDPBEP86), being the superior model at the fifth rung of the Jacobi’s ladder, was used as the reference. The atoms-in-molecule (AIM), alongside with the non-covalent interactions (NCIs) as visual extension had been utilized in the study of weak interactions and to affirm the degree of interactions between the clusters and the toxin. In all cases, this study suggests that the adsorption phenomena are best described as chemisorption due to the negative adsorption enthalpy observed. The mean absolute deviation (MAD) and root mean square deviation (RMSD) statistical approaches suggest the behavior of the possible adsorptions to be ranked as follows: PBE0-D3BJ (first rank), $\omega$B97XD (second rank) and finally, M062X-D3BJ (third rank) with ($\mathrm{\text{MAD}}=0.7846$, 0.7870 and 0.8402) and ($\mathrm{\text{RMSD}}=0.8924$, 0.8946 and 0.9560), respectively. These results are consistent with those of the topological and the sensing parameters, hence, arriving at a conclusive scientific report that Mg${}_{12}$O${}_{12}$ and Mg${}_{12}$PO${}_{11}$ surfaces exhibit relatively better sensing performances for the trapping of melamine (MB).
