We introduce the notion of a Tsirelson pair of C*-algebras, which is a pair of C*-algebras for which the space of quantum strategies obtained by using states on the minimal tensor product of the pair is dense in the space of quantum strategies obtained by using states on the maximal tensor product. We exhibit a number of examples of such pairs that are “nontrivial” in the sense that the minimal tensor product and the maximal tensor product of the pair are not isomorphic. For example, we prove that any pair containing a C*-algebra with Kirchberg’s QWEP property is a Tsirelson pair. We then introduce the notion of a C*-algebra with the Tsirelson property (TP) and establish a number of closure properties for this class. We also show that the class of C*-algebras with the TP forms an elementary class (in the sense of model theory), but that this class does not admit an effective axiomatization.

In this paper, we study the thermal evolution of three types of quantum correlations under the homogeneous and inhomogeneous spin star Hamiltonian. It is shown that quantum discord (QD) is more stable than the other measures in the thermal regime, but concurrence is more efficient when the Hamiltonian parameters are employed. However, all quantum correlations can reach their maximum, if the inhomogeneous parameter raises. Quantum correlations can be enhanced by a weak external magnetic field and strong coupling parameter. But they vanish in the case of a strong magnetic field, weak coupling parameter, and high temperatures.

We study dynamics of local quantum uncertainty (LQU) for a system of two cavities and two reservoirs. In the start, the cavities are treated as two qubits which are quantum correlated with each other, whereas reservoirs (also qubits) are neither correlated with each other nor with cavities. We answer two main questions in this work. First, how local quantum uncertainty decays from two quantum correlated cavities and grows among reservoirs. The second question is the examination of LQU developed among four qubits and also shed some light on its dynamics. We observe that LQU develops among reservoirs as kind of mirror image to its decay from cavities. For four qubits, we propose how to compute LQU such that the method is intuitive and analytically computable. We find that among four qubits, LQU starts growing from zero to some maximum value and then decays again to zero as the asymptotic state of cavities is completely transferred to reservoirs. We suggest the experimental setup to implement our results.

We investigate the quantum correlations of a two-qubit XYZ Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain model with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. The two-qubit system is considered in thermal equilibrium. The variations of logarithmic negativity, uncertainty-induced quantum nonlocality (UIN) and trace distance discord, versus the parameters characterizing the system, are analyzed. The results show that the UIN measure captures quantum correlations that cannot be revealed by entanglement and trace discord. We also show that the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction enhances the non-classical correlations between the spins and can weaken the undesirable destructive effects of thermal fluctuations. In addition, an entangled–unentangled phase transition can be detected from the behavior of logarithmic negativity.

In this paper, the thermal quantum correlations along with the thermal entropic uncertainty in a two neighboring XYZ Heisenberg spin-1/2 particles subjected to a transverse external magnetic field with the interplay of both antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya and symmetric Kaplan–Shekhtman–Entin–Wohlman–Aharony are investigated. The quantum consonance and uncertainty-induced quantum nonlocality as well as the entropic uncertainty with quantum memory for the considered system are specified and the thermal behaviors of them in terms of the system parameters are examined. The expected decrease of quantum correlations for higher absolute temperatures is confirmed while the inflation of the uncertainty is generated. Moreover, we show that the stronger spin-spin and spin-orbit exchange couplings can enhance the thermal quantum correlations and suppress the uncertainty. Accordingly, our remarks are expected to be beneficent in illustrating the dynamical quantum correlations and entropy-based uncertainty in a general Heisenberg spin-chain model and thus would be useful for practical quantum information processing.

This work reports on the stationary evolution of three different kinds of quantum correlations between two distant magnon modes. The system at hand consists of two spatially separated cavities, where each cavity has a microwave (MW) cavity and a magnon mode. The two cavities are coupled to each other via the photon-tunneling process, and both are exposed to the output field of a squeezed vacuum MW fields source. By calculating the covariance matrix fully describing the state of the two magnon modes, we give the explicit expressions of the measures of correlations defined via the Rényi-2 entropy, i.e. the Gaussian quantum steering ${𝒢}$, Gaussian Rényi-2 entanglement $E_R$ and Gaussian Rényi-2 mutual information $I_R$. We find that, the quantum steering is always upper bounded by the entanglement, which is in turn always upper bounded by half of the total correlations. The obtained results are consistent with the hierarchical Rényi-2 quantum correlations established in [L. Lami, C. Hirche, G. Adesso and A. Winter, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 220502 (2016)], i.e. they fulfill the hierarchical inequality $(1/2)I_R\ge E_R\ge {𝒢}$. The influences of the squeezing parameter, the environmental temperature, the cavity–magnon coupling and the cavity–cavity coupling on the correlations are studied in detail.

Quantum correlations between a pair of spin-1/2 represented by an XYZ-Heisenberg chain are investigated under symmetric, anti-symmetric and long-range dipolar interactions. Entanglement, steering, and nonlocality are quantified through concurrence, 3-steering functions, and normalized Bell functions, respectively. By modulating interaction directions, effects on quantum correlations are elucidated for two scenarios: dipolar coupling along x or z, with symmetric and anti-symmetric terms oriented perpendicular or parallel. The results indicate that quantum correlations are enhanced when dipolar coupling aligns with the z-direction versus the x-direction. Moreover, increasing long-range dipolar interaction strength degrades the quantum correlations for weaker Heisenberg chain coupling. Positioning symmetric and anti-symmetric couplings along the z-direction affect quantum correlation dissipation at a critical point. Furthermore, with symmetric and anti-symmetric terms oriented along x, quantum correlations diminish for x-direction dipolar coupling.

A philosophically consistent axiomatic approach to classical and quantum mechanics is given. The approach realizes a strong formal implementation of Bohr's correspondence principle. In all instances, classical and quantum concepts are fully parallel: the same general theory has a classical realization and a quantum realization. Extending the ''probability via expectation'' approach of Whittle to noncommuting quantities, this paper defines quantities, ensembles, and experiments as mathematical concepts and shows how to model complementarity, uncertainty, probability, nonlocality and dynamics in these terms. The approach carries no connotation of unlimited repeatability; hence it can be applied to unique systems such as the universe. Consistent experiments provide an elegant solution to the reality problem, confirming the insistence of the orthodox Copenhagen interpretation on that there is nothing but ensembles, while avoiding its elusive reality picture. The weak law of large numbers explains the emergence of classical properties for macroscopic systems.

Entangled EPR spin pairs can be treated using the statistical ensemble interpretation of quantum mechanics. As such the singlet state results from an ensemble of spin pairs each with its own specific axis of quantization. This axis acts like a quantum mechanical hidden variable. If the spins lose coherence they disentangle into a mixed state that contains classical correlations. In this paper an infinitesimal phase decoherence is introduced to the singlet state in order to reveal more clearly some of the correlations. It is shown that a singlet state has no classical correlations.

We analyze the quantum discordQ throughout the low temperature phase diagram of the quantum XY model in transverse field. We first focus on the T = 0 order–disorder quantum phase transition QPT both in the symmetric ground state and in the symmetry broken one. Beside it, we highlight how Q displays clear anomalies also at a noncritical value of the control parameter inside the ordered phase, where the ground state is completely factorized. We evidence how the phenomenon is in fact of collective nature and displays universal features. We also study Q at finite temperature. We show that, close to the QPT, Q exhibits quantum-classical crossover of the system with universal scaling behavior. We evidence a nontrivial pattern of thermal correlations resulting from the factorization phenomenon.

We analyze the wave function collapse as seen by two distinct observers (with identical detectors) in relative motion. Imposing that the measurement process demands information transfer from the system to the detectors, we note that although different observers will acquire different amount of information from their measurements due to correlations between spin and momentum variables, all of them will agree about the orthogonality of the outcomes, as defined by their own reference frame. So, in this sense, such a quantum mechanical postulate is observer invariant, however the effective efficiency of the measurement process differs for each observer.

It is shown that the probabilities for the spin singlet can be reproduced through classical resources, with no communication between the distant parties, by using merely shared (pseudo-)randomness. If the parties are conscious beings aware of both the hidden-variables and the random mechanism, then one has a conspiracy. If the parties are aware of only the random variables, they may be induced to believe that they are able to send instantaneous information to one another. It is also possible to reproduce the correlations at the price of reducing the detection efficiency. It is further demonstrated that the same probability decomposition could be realized through action-at-a-distance, provided it existed.

We provide a historical perspective of how the notion of correlations has evolved within quantum physics. We begin by reviewing Shannon's information theory and its first application in quantum physics, due to Everett, in explaining the information conveyed during a quantum measurement. This naturally leads us to Lindblad's information theoretic analysis of quantum measurements and his emphasis of the difference between the classical and quantum mutual information. After briefly summarizing the quantification of entanglement using these ideas, we arrive at the concept of quantum discord, which naturally captures the boundary between entanglement and classical correlations. Finally we discuss possible links between discord, which the generation of correlations in thermodynamic transformations of coupled harmonic oscillators.

We review a recently developed theoretical approach to the experimental detection and quantification of bipartite quantum correlations (QCs) between a qubit and a d-dimensional system. Specifically, introducing a properly designed measure Q, the presented scheme allows us to quantify general QCs for arbitrary states of 2⊗d systems without the need to fully reconstruct them by tomographic techniques. We take in exam the specifics of the required experimental architecture in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and optical settings. Finally we extend this approach to models of open system dynamics and discuss possible advantages and limitations in such a context.

We address the balance of quantum correlations for continuous variable (CV) states. In particular, we consider a class of feasible tripartite CV pure states and explicitly prove two Koashi–Winter-like conservation laws involving Gaussian entanglement of formation (EoF), Gaussian quantum discord and sub-system Von Neumann entropies. We also address the class of tripartite CV mixed states resulting from the propagation in a noisy environment, and discuss how the previous equalities evolve into inequalities.

The classification and quantification of correlations (classical and quantum) in composite quantum systems are of fundamental significance for quantum information processing. While the paradigm of separability versus entanglement has been intensively studied, the scenario of classicality versus quantumness, with focus on the quantum discord, has also attracted many recent interests. In this paper, pursuing further the latter scenario and exploiting the intrinsic structure of bipartite quantum states via local projective measurements, we introduce the notion of coherent dimension of correlations in terms of the Lüders measurements. The coherent dimension can alternatively be regarded as a generalization of the Schmidt number of a pure state. Furthermore, we propose some families of measures for correlations, which extend naturally both the quantum discord and the quantum mutual information (total correlations), and furthermore interpolate between them. These quantities reveal some hierarchial structures, and provide a more complete description, of both classical and quantum correlations in the quantum realm.

We examine bipartite and multipartite correlations within the construct of unitary orbits. We show that the set of product states is a very small subset of set of all possible states, while all unitary orbits contain classically correlated states. Using this we give meaning to degeneration of quantum correlations due to a unitary interactions, which we call coherent correlations. The remaining classical correlations are called incoherent correlations and quantified in terms of the distance of the joint probability distributions to its marginals. Finally, we look at how entanglement looks in this picture for the two-qubit case.

We review the main results and ideas showing that quantum correlations at finite temperatures (T), in particular quantum discord, are useful tools in characterizing quantum phase transitions (QPT) that only occur, in principle, at the unattainable absolute zero temperature. We first review some interesting results about the behavior of thermal quantum discord for small spin-1/2 chains and show that they already give us important hints of the infinite chain behavior. We then study in detail and in the thermodynamic limit (infinite chains) the thermal quantum correlations for the XXZ and XY models, where one can clearly appreciate that the behavior of thermal quantum discord at finite T is a useful tool to spotlight the critical point of a QPT.

We examine the quantum correlations of spin pairs in the ground state of finite XY chains in a transverse field, by evaluating the quantum discord as well as other related entropic measures of quantum correlations. A brief review of the latter, based on generalized entropic forms, is also included. It is shown that parity effects are of crucial importance for describing the behavior of these measures below the critical field. It is also shown that these measures reach full range in the immediate vicinity of the factorizing field, where they become independent of separation and coupling range. Analytical and numerical results for the quantum discord, the geometric discord and other measures in spin chains with nearest neighbor coupling and in fully connected spin arrays are also provided.

We analyze the effects of quantum correlations on the parameter precision in an interferometric configuration. As probe states, we consider a class of two-qubit states for which the analytical expression of the quantum interferometric power, quantifying the quantum correlations, is explicitly derived. Also, we give and analyze the local quantum Fisher information, which evaluates the sensitivity of the probe state to the phase shift, for some relevant local Hamiltonians. The discord-like quantum correlations based on the notion of quantum interferometric power are compared with the original quantum discord based on von Neumann entropy. We also examine the significance of quantum correlations in enhancing the precision of the phase estimation. Our study corroborates the recent series of investigations focusing on the role of quantum correlations other than entanglement on the efficiency of quantum metrology protocols.
