In this paper, a delayed cytokine-enhanced viral infection model incorporating nonlinear incidence and immune response is proposed and studied. The global stabilities of the equilibria of the model are characterized by constructing suitable Lyapunov functionals. The existence and properties of local Hopf bifurcation are discussed by regarding the immunity delay as the bifurcation parameter. Moreover, the global existence of Hopf bifurcation has been proved by regarding the immune delay as the bifurcation parameter. Numerical simulations are carried out to validate the obtained results. The results show that ignoring the cytokine-enhanced effect makes the infection risk underevaluated. The simulations show that increasing the immune delay destabilizes the model and generates a Hopf bifurcation and stability switches occurs. Moreover, it shows that immune delay may dominate the intracellular delays in such a viral infection model which means that the immune system of the host itself is complicated during virus infection.

This paper presents a detailed analysis on the dynamics of a two-dimensional delayed small-world network under delayed state feedback control. On the basis of stability switch criteria, the equilibrium is studied, and the stability conditions are determined. This study shows that with properly chosen delay and gain in the delayed feedback path, the controlled small-world delayed network may have stable equilibrium, or periodic solutions resulting from the Hopf bifurcation, or the multistability solutions via three types of codimension two bifurcations. Moreover, the direction of Hopf bifurcation and stability of the bifurcation periodic solutions are determined by using the normal form theory and center manifold theorem. In addition, the study shows that the controlled model exhibits period-doubling bifurcations which lead eventually to chaos; and the chaos can also directly occur via the bifurcations from the quasi-periodic solutions. The results show that the delayed feedback is an effective approach in order to generate or annihilate complex behaviors in practical applications.

A diffusive Brusselator model with delayed feedback control subject to Dirichlet boundary condition is considered. The stability of the unique constant equilibrium and the existence of a family of inhomogeneous periodic solutions are investigated in detail, exhibiting rich spatiotemporal patterns. Moreover, it shows that Turing instability occurs without delay. And under certain conditions, the constant equilibrium switches finite times from stability to instability to stability, and becomes unstable eventually, as the delay crosses through some critical values. Then, the direction and the stability of Hopf bifurcations are determined by the normal form theory and the center manifold reduction for partial functional differential equations. Finally, some numerical simulations are carried out for illustrating the analysis results.

The paper presents a detailed analysis on the collective dynamics and delayed state feedback control of a three-dimensional delayed small-world network. The trivial equilibrium of the model is first investigated, showing that the uncontrolled model exhibits complicated unbounded behavior. Then three control strategies, namely a position feedback control, a velocity feedback control, and a hybrid control combined velocity with acceleration feedback, are then introduced to stabilize this unstable system. It is shown in these three control schemes that only the hybrid control can easily stabilize the 3-D network system. And with properly chosen delay and gain in the delayed feedback path, the hybrid controlled model may have stable equilibrium, or periodic solutions resulting from the Hopf bifurcation, or complex stranger attractor from the period-doubling bifurcation. Moreover, the direction of Hopf bifurcation and stability of the bifurcation periodic solutions are analyzed. The results are further extended to any "d" dimensional network. It shows that to stabilize a "d" dimensional delayed small-world network, at least a "d – 1" order completed differential feedback is needed. This work provides a constructive suggestion for the high dimensional delayed systems.

A predator–prey system with neutral delay is investigated from the viewpoint of bifurcation analysis on neutral delay differential equations. Stability and Hopf bifurcation of the inner equilibrium are given, by which we show how the neutral terms affect the dynamical behavior of the prey and the predator. To give more detailed information on the periodic oscillations, the direction and stability of Hopf bifurcation are studied by using the normal form theory of neutral equation. We find neutral delay makes the predator–prey system more complicated and usually induces stability switches or double Hopf bifurcations. Near the double Hopf bifurcation we give the detailed bifurcation set by calculating the universal unfoldings. It is shown that the population of prey or predator may exhibit transient quasiperiodic oscillations driven by the neutral delay. Finally, we carry out several groups of illustrations.

In this paper, we investigate the stability and Hopf bifurcation of a delayed density-dependent predator–prey system with Beddington–DeAngelis functional response, where not only the prey density dependence but also the predator density dependence are considered such that the studied predator–prey system conforms to the realistically biological environment. We start with the geometric criterion introduced by Beretta and Kuang [2002] and then investigate the stability of the positive equilibrium and the stability switches of the system with respect to the delay parameter $\tau$. Especially, we generalize the geometric criterion in [Beretta & Kuang, 2002] by introducing the condition $(i^{\prime })$ which can be assured by the condition $(H_2^{\prime })$, and adopting the technique of lifting to define the function ${\tilde{S}}_n(\tau )$ for alternatively determining stability switches at the zeroes of ${\tilde{S}}_n(\tau )$s. Afterwards, by the Poincaré normal form for Hopf bifurcation in [Kuznetsov, 1998] and the bifurcation formulae in [Hassard et al., 1981], we qualitatively analyze the properties for the occurring Hopf bifurcations of the system (3). Finally, an example with numerical simulations is given to illustrate the obtained results.

In this paper, we consider a Cohen–Grossberg neural network with three delays. Regarding time delays as a parameter, we investigate the effect of time delays on its dynamics. We show that there exist stability switches for time delays under certain conditions and the conditions for the existence of periodic oscillations are given by discussing the associated characteristic equation. Numerical simulations are given to illustrate the obtained results and interesting network behaviors are observed, such as multiple stability switches of the network equilibrium and synchronous (asynchronous) oscillations.

The emergence of any new infectious disease poses much stress on the government to control the spread of such disease. The easy, fast and less expensive way to slow down the spread of disease is to make the population be aware of its spread and possible control mechanisms. For this purpose, government allocates some funds to make public aware through mass media, print media, pamphlets, etc. Keeping this in view, in this paper, a nonlinear mathematical model is proposed and analyzed to assess the effect of time delay in providing funds by the government to warn people. It is assumed that susceptible individuals contract infection through the direct contact with infected individuals; however the rate of contracting infection is a decreasing function of funds availability. The proposed model is analyzed using stability theory of delay differential equations and numerical simulations. The model analysis shows that the increase in funds to warn people reduces the number of infected individuals but delay in providing the funds destabilizes the interior equilibrium and may cause stability switches.

In this paper, we study a delayed viral infection model with cellular infection and full logistic proliferations for both healthy and infected cells. The global asymptotic stabilities of the equilibria are studied by constructing Lyapunov functionals. Moreover, we investigated the existence of Hopf bifurcation at the infected equilibrium by regarding the possible combination of the two delays as bifurcation parameters. The results show that time delays may destabilize the infected equilibrium and lead to Hopf bifurcation. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the main results and explore the dynamics including Hopf bifurcation and stability switches.
