The Melnikov theory for detecting subharmonic responses in periodically forced oscillators, the so-called subharmonic Melnikov theory, is a well-known technique within the dynamical system fields. The method succeeds in establishing the existence and stability of subharmonics in perturbed Hamiltonian systems as well as in discussing their bifurcations. But the parameter values estimated for the bifurcations are often found to be in poor agreement with those determined numerically. For damped and periodically driven oscillators, an approach which may substantially improve the agreement between analytical predictions and numerical investigations is proposed. The suggested technique consists in analyzing the forced regime of the oscillations by variational procedure, starting from the (approximate) solution for the free but damped oscillations. Applying this approach to the weakly nonlinear Duffing oscillator, it has been possible to detect analytically some subharmonics that the standard Melnikov theory fails to detect, thus demonstrating the ability of the proposed technique to capture much more of the dynamics.

In this work, a zero static error proportional controller for a two-cell DC-DC buck converter is synthesized and analyzed. Under a traditional proportional control scheme, the system presents a constant error of the current supplying the output load. As the proportional feedback gain is increased, the average static error decreases. However, subharmonic oscillations and chaotic behavior emerge beyond successive bifurcations. To achieve zero current and zero voltage static error, we suggest a modification of the traditional proportional controller. By optimizing the feedback gain, the settling time is also decreased. Then, using nonlinear analysis and Lyapunov stability theory, we prove that zero static error is achieved even in the presence of duty cycle saturation. Numerical simulations are presented to confirm our theoretical results.

We prove that the superlinear indefinite equation

In the first part of this paper, elastostatic stability of cracked conservative flanged concrete beam-columns has been analyzed. Using the derived expression for the lateral stiffness under constant axial force, their elastodynamic stability is investigated in this second part. As expected, the instantaneous values of the stiffness and the damping coefficients of the lumped-mass underdamped SDOF nonlinear structures are found to depend upon the vibration amplitude. The natural frequency has been found to vanish at the two critical axial loads defined in the first part. For axial load exceeding the second critical value, the concrete beam-columns in the second equilibrium state are shown to exhibit loss of dynamic stability by divergence. Depending upon the initial conditions, the phase plane has been partitioned into dynamically stable and unstable regions. Under harmonic excitations, the nonlinear dynamical systems exhibit subharmonic resonances and jump phenomena. Loss of dynamic stability has been predicted for some ranges of damping ratio as well as of peak sinusoidal force and forcing frequency. Sensitivity of dynamic stability to the initial conditions and the sense of the peak sinusoidal force have also been predicted. The theoretical significance and the methodology adopted in this paper are also discussed.

In this paper the study of complex phenomenon in buck converter under voltage mode control, operating in discontinious current mode, within Matlab/Simulink simulation environments is provided. To perform simulations different types of models are used: based on discrete-time maps, differential equations and real elements (including different nonidealities). The main goal of this paper is to detect the ability of various Matlab/Simulink models to identify and to explore different types of complex behaviour, such as chaos and bifurcataions, in switch-mode DC-DC converters, as system parameters are changed, as well as to estalish the possibilities of each model in this kind of investigation. Simulations are carried out by means of Matlab/Simulink simulation environment that provides wide range of blocks and elements for complete investigation procedure, including the implementation of all types of mentioned models and appropriate result data postprocessing and visualization. The verification of accuracy of developed models is based on the detection of Feigenbaum numbers. All models with definite level of precision are able to reveal that under certain circuit parameters period doubling route to chaos is observed.
