Narrow Results

The massive topologically and self-dual theories in seven dimensions are considered. The local duality between these theories is established and the dimensional reduction leads to different dualities for massive antisymmetric fields in four dimensions.

We investigate the effect of a small, gauge-invariant mass of the gluon on the anomalous chromomagnetic moment (ACM) of quarks by perturbative calculations at one-loop level. The mass of the gluon is taken to have been generated via a topological mass generation mechanism, in which the gluon acquires a mass through its interaction with an antisymmetric tensor field $B_{\mu \nu }$. For a small gluon mass ($<$ 10 MeV), we calculate the ACM at momentum transfer $q^2=-M_Z^2$. We compare those with the ACM calculated for the gluon mass arising from a Proca mass term. We find that the ACM of up, down, strange and charm quarks vary significantly with the gluon mass, while the ACM of top and bottom quarks show negligible gluon mass dependence. The mechanism of gluon mass generation is most important for the strange quarks ACM, but not so much for the other quarks. We also show the results at $q^2=-m_t^2$. We find that the dependence on gluon mass at $q^2=-m_t^2$ is much less than at $q^2=-M_Z^2$ for all quarks.

We obtain a Lorentzian solution for the topologically massive non-Abelian gauge theory on AdS space by means of an SU(1, 1) gauge transformation of the previously found Abelian solution. There exists a natural scale of length which is determined by the inverse topological mass ν ~ ng². In the topologically massive electrodynamics the field strength locally determines the gauge potential up to a closed 1-form via the (anti-)self-duality equation. We introduce a transformation of the gauge potential using the dual field strength which can be identified with an Abelian gauge transformation. Then we present map including the topological mass which is the Lorentzian analog of the Hopf map. This map yields a global decomposition of as a trivial bundle over the upper portion of the pseudosphere which is the Hyperboloid model for the Lobachevski geometry. This leads to a reduction of the Abelian field equation onto using a global section of the solution on . Then we discuss the integration of the field equation using the Archimedes map . We also present a brief discussion of the holonomy of the gauge potential and the dual field strength on .

We discuss three mathematical structures which arise in topologically massive Abelian gauge theory. First, the Euclidean topologically massive Abelian gauge theory defines a contact structure on a manifold. We briefly discuss three solutions and the related contact structures on the flat 3-torus, the AdS space, the 3-sphere which respectively correspond to Bianchi type I, VIII, IX spaces. We also present solutions on Bianchi type II, VI and VII spaces. Secondly, we discuss a family of complex (anti-)self-dual solutions of the Euclidean theory in Cartesian coordinates on which are given by (anti)holomorpic functions. The orthogonality relation of contact structures which are determined by the real parts of these complex solutions separates them into two classes: the self-dual and the anti-self-dual solutions. Thirdly, we apply the curl transformation to this theory. An arbitrary solution is given by a vector tangent to a sphere whose radius is determined by the topological mass in transform space. Meanwhile a gauge transformation corresponds to a vector normal to this sphere. We discuss the quantization of topological mass in an example.

We present a unified analysis of single excitation vector models in three dimensions. We show that there is a family of first-order master actions related by duality transformations which interpolate between the different models. We use a Hamiltonian (2+1) analysis to show the equivalence of the self-dual and topologically massive models with a covariant nonlocal model which propagates also a single massive excitation. It is shown how the nonlocal terms appears naturally in the path integral framework.

We present a unified analysis of the self-dual, second order, topologically massive and the recently introduced fourth-order models of massive gravity in 3D. We show that there is a family of first-order actions which interpolate between these different single excitation models. We show how the master actions are related by duality transformation. We construct by the same method the master action which relates the fourth-order new massive model with two excitations and the usual second-order model with Fierz–Pauli mass. We show that the more general model obtained by adding a Chern–Simons term to the new massive model is equivalent off-shell to the second-order spontaneously broken linearized massive gravity.

In this paper, we study the ground state energy of a massless scalar field and generation of topological mass by considering a quasi-periodically identified Minkowski spacetime and the “half-Einstein universe”, that is, an Einstein universe where the massless scalar field satisfies the Dirichlet boundary condition. The analysis is performed considering one and two-loop contributions to the effective potential in both cases. We also compare our results with earlier studies.

In this paper, the effective potential approach in quantum field theory is used in order to investigate self-interaction loop correction to the Casimir energy density and generation of topological mass for both massless and massive real scalar fields. It is assumed that the scalar field obeys a helix boundary condition. In addition, it is also considered a CPT-even aether-type violation of the Lorentz symmetry. In the absence of the Lorentz violation, we obtain analytical expressions for the loop correction to the Casimir energy density and to the mass of the scalar field. The same expressions are also obtained assuming the Lorentz violation in each of the spacetime directions. We also show some graphs that exhibit how the loop correction and the Lorentz violation affect the Casimir energy density and the mass of the scalar field.

In this paper, the vacuum energy density and generation of topological mass are investigated for a system of a real and complex scalar fields interacting with each other. In addition to that, it is also included the quartic self-interaction for each one of the fields. The condition imposed on the real field is the periodic condition, while the complex field obey a quasi-periodic condition. The system is placed in a scenario where the CPT-even aether-type Lorentz symmetry violation takes place. We allow that the Lorentz violation affects the fields with different intensities. The vacuum energy density, its loop correction, and the topological mass are evaluated analytically. It is also discussed the possibility of different vacuum states and their corresponding stability requirements, which depends on the conditions imposed on the fields, the interaction coupling constants and also the Lorentz violation parameters. The formalism used here to perform this investigation is the effective potential one, which is written as a loop expansion via path integral in quantum field theory.
