The viral safety of blood derived products relies in properly chosen inactivation procedures. In this way, it has been reported that some photosensitizers are useful products for blood sterilization. The data presented here show the high incorporation efficiency of the chlorin 3-phorbinepropanol, 9,14-diethyl-4,8,13,18-tetramethyl-20-(3S-trans) (CHL) into anionic unilamellar liposomes, give a protocol for the steric immobilization of chlorin-containing liposomes in a chromatographic support and provide the studies of photodynamic inactivation of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) with chlorin-containing liposomes, free in solution and immobilized on Sephacryl S-1000 beads. The study demonstrates the successful inactivation of the enveloped virus BVDV by both preparations in culture medium and the resistance of the non-enveloped virus EMCV. The effectiveness of CHL-containing liposomes, in solution and immobilized in the chromatographic support, decreased when the culture media was replaced with human blood plasma. Moreover, the reduction factor of the virus titer after irradiation was smallest when immobilized liposomes were used. Nevertheless, the reduction factor for the virus titers of enveloped viruses after irradiation of human blood plasma samples with immobilized chlorin-containing liposomes increased with the reduction of the sample thickness. The more outstanding aspect of this paper is the design of a system useful for blood sterilization that can be easily removed after photodynamic treatment and, therefore, able to be applied in the manufacturing processes.

Porphyrin-based photodynamic processes have been used for the inactivation of microorganisms and treatment of tumors. The virucidal activity of porphyrins 3-PtTPyP and 4-PtTPyP was investigated against bovine viruses representative of the main structural groups (enveloped/non-enveloped, DNA/RNA: BVDV, BoHV-1, BAV and BEV), and against two epitheliotropic viruses (VSV and VACV). Viral suspensions were incubated at 0.91 $\mu$mol ${}^{.}$ L${}^{-1}$ and exposed to a white-light LED array source (25 mW ${}^{.}$ cm${}^{-2}$; 90 J ${}^{.}$ cm${}^{-2})$ for 0, 15, 30 and 60 min followed by determination of the remaining virus titers. Porphyrin 3-PtTPyP reduced almost 6 log of VSV and 3.5 log of BVDV titers after 15 min and complete virus photoinactivation was achieved after 30 min. 4-PtTPyP at 0.91 $\mu$mol ${}^{.}$ L${}^{-1}$ produced reduction of titers of all enveloped virus depending on the time of light irradiation. No virucidal activity of any of the porphyrins was observed for non-enveloped viruses and these results showed the potential of porphyrins to inactivate viruses in premises.

The inactivation ability of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) was examined using two types of transparent Cu₂O thin films with different crystallinities on a Na-free glass substrate. The low-crystallinity Cu₂O thin film, which was fabricated by irradiating 254 nm ultraviolet (UV)-light with an intensity of 6.72 mW cm${}^{-2}$ onto a spin-coated precursor film involving Cu${}^{2+}$ complexes at room temperature, exhibited an outstanding COVID-19 inactivation ability to reduce 99.999% of the virus after 1 h of incubation. The X-ray diffraction results of the UV-irradiated thin film indicated a cubic Cu₂O lattice with a small crystallite size of 2 ± 1 nm. Conversely, the high-crystallinity Cu₂O thin film with a crystallite size of 16 ± 3 nm, obtained by heating a spin-coated precursor film containing another Cu${}^{2+}$ complex, showed a negligibly low inactivation activity at the same level as the Na-free glass substrate. The eluted concentrations of Cu ions from both Cu₂O thin films were analyzed after immersion in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM) for 0.25–2 h. The eluted Cu–ion concentration of 1.16 ppm was observed for the UV-irradiated thin film by DMEM immersion after 1 h, but that of 0.04 ppm was observed for the heat-treated thin film. This indicated that an important factor of virus inactivation on Cu₂O thin films is highly related to the elution of Cu ions that occurred from the surface in the medium.

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), known for its ability to generate Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS), has emerged as a promising tool in many biomedical applications, including cancer therapeutics and virus inactivation. In cancer therapy, ROS and RNS induced by plasma have been shown to selectively target cancer cells, triggering apoptosis and inhibiting tumor growth while sparing healthy cells. This selective cytotoxicity makes plasma an attractive option for localized cancer treatment with minimal side effects. Additionally, the antimicrobial properties of ROS and RNS make plasma an effective agent for virus inactivation. By connecting the dots between cancer therapy and virus disinfection, this review paper sheds light on the potential of plasma-generated ROS and RNS as versatile tools in medical applications, offering a dual benefit of targeted cancer treatment and effective virus control. Specifically, this review explores the effects of CAP treatment on B16 melanoma cells, assessing changes in cell viability, proliferation, apoptosis and oxidative stress response. Dichloroacetate (DCA), a mitochondrial modulator, has shown promise in inducing apoptosis in melanoma cells. However, its clinical use is limited by side effects related to its neurotoxicity and suspected carcinogenicity. The potential of CAP in enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of DCA on B16-F10 melanoma apoptosis is also explored. CAP therapeutics for other types of cancers are also explored in this review. Alongside its implications in oncology, CAP has gathered substantial attention for its extraordinary potential in neutralizing viruses. CAP’s exceptional precision in targeting viral envelopes, genetic material and structural components disrupts their integrity and vital functions. This orchestrated mechanism offers a swift and efficacious route to render viruses inactive, encompassing both enveloped and nonenveloped viral types. In parallel pursuit, this review examines CAP-generated reactive species’ proficiency in deactivating SARS-CoV-2 across various surfaces. The inquiry entails subjecting surfaces to CAP treatment, succeeded by quantifying viral load and scrutinizing viral integrity. The outcomes gleaned from these investigations provide pivotal insights into CAP’s potential as a robust surface disinfection strategy, poised to combat the propagation of viral transmission.
