Ecological risks resulting from changes in land use in Wuhan in the past 15 years1

Based on the regional quantitative calculation of five classes of ecological risks, the landscape security pattern in Wuhan has undergone significant differences in terms of ecological risks resulting from changes in land use over the past 15 years. From 1996 to 2010, the Class 1 landscape security pattern became increasingly small and transferred from the north to the west and south. The Class 2 landscape gradually shrank, and its distribution pattern transferred from a scattered form to the urban fringe. The Class 3 landscape pattern transferred from the urban center to the urban fringe and back to the urban center. The Class 4 landscape gradually became large with uneven pattern changes. The Class 5 landscape significantly transferred from the southeast to the east and north. In the urban area from 1996 to 2010, the degree of landscape ecological security in Wuhan exhibited a trend of safe to poor from downtown to the urban fringe. We can observe regular variation in landscape ecological security in Wuhan. In the main urban area, the public need for a suitable urban environment is increasing. Coupled with the controllability of human activities, landscape ecological security has gradually stabilized. However, with the acceleration of urbanization and increases in population and urban construction land, the public have gradually strengthened the development and utilization of suburban areas, particularly of cultivated land, forest, water, unused land, and other natural resources. Therefore, the degree of landscape ecological security of suburban areas has gradually declined because of human intervention.
