Nonlinear Optical Metasurfaces and Metastructures

Nonlinear Optical Metasurfaces and Metastructures

Aims and Scope

Nonlinear optical metamaterials represent a cutting-edge platform that transcends the boundaries of traditional optical devices, empowering strong control over light-matter interactions, such as enhanced nonlinear effects in hyperbolic materials and zero-index materials. In the past years, the concept of nonlinear optical metasurface has been explored to design various optical functional devices such as optical frequency converters, all-optical switches, quantum light sources, nonlinear imaging and so on. In contrast to conventional methods, metasurfaces offer unparalleled versatility, enabling simultaneous manipulation of amplitude, frequency, polarization, phase, and orbital angular momentum of light. Their potential applications span diverse fields such as optical communications, sensing, imaging and information processing. Recently, different novel metastructures are developed in various new material matrices, such as 2D quantum materials, perovskite and lithium niobate thin films. This special issue is dedicated to exploring the fundamental principles and potential applications of nonlinear optical metasurfaces and metastructures. Submissions for this issue are by invitation only.

Topics within the scope of this topical issue include, but are not limited to:

  • Ultrafast light-matter interactions in nanophotonic devices
  • Nonlinear optical metamaterials
  • Nonlinear optical metasurface
  • Metasurface for switching and modulations
  • Quantum metasurfaces
  • Spatio-temporal light field manipulation
  • Nonlinear optics effects in novel meta-structures
