About the Series Editor

Dr. Joel R Fried is Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Louisville following professorial and chair appointments at Florida State University, the University of Dayton, and the University of Cincinnati (UC) where he is Professor Emeritus and Fellow of the Graduate School. Over nearly 40-years, Professor Fried has been active researcher and educator in the area of membrane separations including industry (Monsanto Permea fundamental research team) and academia (UC, Dayton FSU, and UofL). In a career that expanded 32 years at UC, he was awarded over $16 million in external funding including an $4-million NSF IGERT program on Bio-applications of Membrane Science and Technology, two Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) awards in Membrane Science and Technology, a $2 million award from the Ohio Board of Regents to establish the Ohio Molecular Computation and Simulation Center, and was a co-PI in a $5 million Center of Excellence in Membranes funded by Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio). Professor Fried has approximately 150 archival publications and is currently finishing a textbook on Computational Chemistry and Molecular Simulations (Wiley) and one on Advanced Thermodynamics (McGraw-Hill). He is the author of the widely used textbook Polymer Science and Technology (3rd ed, Pearson, 2014), and is a co-author of a scientific biography on Paul John Flory: A Life of Science and Friends (CRC Press, 2015). He is an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineer (AIChE) where he is a Fellow and currently serves on the AIChE Publication Committee. For the American Chemical Society he a co-instructor of a short course on Polymer Science and Technology. Professor Fried was the Associate Editor of Computational and Theoretical Polymer Science (Elsevier), served on the Editorial boards of Polymer and the Journal of Polymer Engineering, and was the second editor of the Membrane Quarterly of the North American Membrane Society (NAMS). Professor Fried has advised approximately 50 graduate students and 15 postdoctoral scholars at UC alone. His recent research efforts focus on using computational chemistry and molecular simulations to study the diffusion of ions and small molecules in polymeric and biomimetic membranes for gas separations, fuel cells, and ion transport applications.

Membranes can be biological, such as lipid bilayer membranes that encapsulate a human cell, or synthetic membrane that may be polymeric, biomimetic, or inorganic. Common to both is the ability to regulate transport of an ion or a molecule such as water, a fixed gas, or polynucleotides as examples. Membranes find important applications when they can be selective on the basis of size, charge, or polarity. These applications are found in nearly all aspects of our economy and have great importance in medical areas as described in the first volume of our book series, Biomedical Membranes and (Bio)artificial Organs, edited by Professor Dimitrios Stamatialis of the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Another very important application for synthetic membranes is the separation of mixtures of gases that is the focus of Volume 2, Membranes for Gas Separations, edited by Professor Moises Carreon of the Colorado School of Mines. Forthcoming book coverage includes the use of membranes in water treatment, applications of biomimetic membranes that mimic the structure of biological membranes, the use of molecular simulations to study transport properties, applications for ceramic and metallic membranes, the use of membranes in energy and environment applications including fuel cells, and the design and application of membrane systems in the chemical, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. These areas have great technological, economic, and medical importance. It is our expectation that this new book series on Membrane Science and Technology that will provide an authoritative and contemporary coverage of these important topics.
