We discuss the role that synchrotron light sources, such as SESAME, could play in improving the socioeconomic conditions in developing countries. After providing a brief description of a synchrotron light source, we discuss the important role that they played in the development of several economically emerging countries. Then we describe the state of synchrotron science in South Africa and that country’s leadership role in founding the African Light Source initiative. Next, we highlight a new initiative called Lightsources for Africa, the Americas & Middle East Project, which is a global initiative led by the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and the International Union of Crystallography, with initial funding provided by the International Council for Science. Finally, we comment on a new technology called the multibend achromat that has launched a new paradigm for the design of synchrotron light sources that should be attractive for construction in developing countries.

The two-parameter formulae viz. the power index formula, the nuclear softness formula and the VMI model are adopted to accredit the band head spin $(I_0)$ of four superdeformed rotational bands in ${}^{133}\mathrm{\text{Pr}}$. The technique of least square fitting is used to accredit the band head spin for four superdeformed rotational bands in ${}^{133}\mathrm{\text{Pr}}$. The root mean deviation among the computed transition energies and well-known experimental transition energies are attained by extracting the model parameters from the two-parameter formulae. The determined transition energies are in excellent agreement with the experimental transition energies, whenever exact spins are accredited. The power index formula coincides well with the experimental data and provides minimum root mean deviation. So, the power index formula is more efficient tool than the nuclear softness formula and the VMI model. The deviation of dynamic moment of inertia $J^{(2)}$ against the rotational frequency is also examined.

At the Planck scale of length $\sim 10^{-35}$ m where the energy is comparable with the Planck energy, the quantum gravity corrections to the classical background spacetime results in gravity’s rainbow or rainbow gravity. In this modified theory of gravity, geometry depends on the energy of the test particle used to probe the spacetime, such that in the low energy limit, it yields the standard general relativity. In this work, we study the thin-shell wormholes in the spherically symmetric rainbow gravity. We find the corresponding properties in terms of the rainbow functions which are essential in the rainbow gravity and the stability of such thin-shell wormholes are investigated. Particularly, it will be shown that there are exact solutions in which high energy particles crossing the throat will encounter less amount of total exotic matter. This may be used as an advantage over general relativity to reduce the amount of exotic matter.

The extended Einstein–Maxwell-aether-axion model describes internal interactions inside the system, which contains gravitational, electromagnetic fields, the dynamic unit vector field describing the velocity of an aether, and the pseudoscalar field associated with the axionic dark matter. The specific feature of this model is that the axion field controls the dynamics of the aether through the guiding functions incorporated into Jacobson’s constitutive tensor. Depending on the state of the axion field, these guiding functions can control and switch on or switch off the influence of acceleration, shear, vorticity and expansion of the aether flow on the state of physical system as a whole. We obtain new exact solutions, which possess the pp-wave symmetry, and indicate them by the term pp-wave aether modes in contrast to the pure pp-waves, which cannot propagate in this field conglomerate. These exact solutions describe a specific dynamic state of the pseudoscalar field, which corresponds to one of the minima of the axion potential and switches off the influence of shear and expansion of the aether flow; the model does not impose restrictions on Jacobson’s coupling constants and on the axion mass. Properties of these new exact solutions are discussed.

An exact solution of straight spinning cosmic strings in Brans–Dicke theory of gravitation is presented. The possibility of the existence of closed time-like curves around these cosmic strings is analyzed. Furthermore, the stability about the formation of the topological defect discussed here is checked. It is shown that the existence of a suitable choice for the integration constants in which closed time-like curves are not allowed. We also study the (im)possibility of using the obtained spacetime in the rotational curves problem.

A general formalism to investigate Bianchi type $V{I}_h$ universes is developed in an extended theory of gravity. A minimally coupled geometry and matter field is considered with a rescaled function of $f(R,T)$ substituted in place of the Ricci scalar R in the geometrical action. Dynamical aspects of the models are discussed by using a hybrid scale factor (HSF) that behaves as power law in an initial epoch and as an exponential form at late epoch. The power law behavior and the exponential behavior appear as two extreme cases of the present model.

Non-Abelian strings are considered in non-supersymmetric theories with fermions in various appropriate representations of the gauge group U$(N)$. We derive the electric charge quantization conditions and the index theorems counting fermion zero modes in the string background both for the left-handed and right-handed fermions. In both cases we observe a non-trivial $N$ dependence.
