We present a kinetic model describing the growth of eukaryotic cells or, more specifically, the dependence of the cell volume on time in terms of the global interplay of the mRNA and protein synthesis and degradation and lipid synthesis. Addressing two long-standing questions in this interdisciplinary field, we explain why the average protein concentration in growing cells is nearly constant and the growth can accurately be fitted by using a bilinear or exponential function.

Collagen fibrils, cable-like assemblies of long biological molecules, the so-called triple helices, are dominant components of connective tissues. Their determinant morphological and functional roles motivated a large number of studies concerning their formation and structure. However, these two points are still open questions and, particularly, that of the lateral assembly of the triple helices which is certainly dense but not strictly that of a well-ordered molecular crystal. We examine here the geometrical template provided by the algorithm of phyllotaxis which gives to each element of an assembly of points or parallel rods the most homogeneous and isotropic dense environment in a situation of cylindrical symmetry. The scattered intensity obtained from a phyllotactic distribution of triple helices in collagen fibrils presents features which could contribute to the scattering observed along the equatorial direction of their X-ray patterns. Following this approach, the aggregation of triple helices in fibrils should be considered within the frame of soft condensed matter studies rather than that of molecular crystal studies.

Plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum is a single cell visible by unaided eye, which spans sources of nutrients with its protoplasmic network. In a very simple experimental setup we recorded electric potential of the propagating plasmodium. We discovered a complex interplay of short range oscillatory behavior combined with long range, low frequency oscillations which serve to communicate information between different parts of the plasmodium. The plasmodium's response to changing environmental conditions forms basis patterns of electric activity, which are unique indicators of the following events: plasmodium occupies a site, plasmodium functions normally, plasmodium becomes "agitated" due to drying substrate, plasmodium departs a site, and plasmodium forms sclerotium. Using a collective particle approximation of Physarum polycephalum we found matching correlates of electrical potential in computational simulations by measuring local population flux at the node positions, generating trains of high and low frequency oscillatory behavior. Motifs present in these measurements matched the response "grammar" of the plasmodium when encountering new nodes, simulated consumption of nutrients, exposure to simulated hazardous illumination and sclerotium formation. The distributed computation of the particle collective was able to calculate beneficial network structures and sclerotium position by shifting the active growth zone of the simulated plasmodium. The results show future promise for the non-invasive study of the complex dynamical behavior within — and health status of — living systems.

Actin polymerization driven stochastic movement of the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes is often measured using single-particle tracking (SPT) methodology and analyzed in terms of statistics. Experimental results suggested a dynamic association between the growing actin filaments and the propelled bacteria. Based on an alternative mathematical formalism for a Brownian ratchet (BR), we introduce such an attractive interaction into the one-dimensional BR model and show that its effect is equivalent to an external resistant force on the bacterium. Such a force significantly reduces the Brownian motion of a driven bacterium, and accentuates the stepping due to polymerization. We then consider the growth, with and without a barrier, of a filamentous bundle consisting of N identical filaments. It is shown that the bundle grows with a similar rate as a single filament in the absence of a load, but can oppose N times the external force under the stalling condition. A set of relationships describing the velocity of the bacterium movement (V_z) and its apparent diffusivity (D_z) as functions of the resistant force (F) and the number of filaments in a bundle (N) are obtained. The theoretical study suggests methods for data analysis in future experiments with applied external resistant force.

In the present technique, an amount of radon gas (2210 ± 5.1 Bq/m³) is collected in a tight PVC chamber equipped with two sources of radium (5 μCi). Blood samples and the pieces of CR-39NTDs are exposed (together) to a known radon concentration for different periods of exposure. Complete blood test and the computer scanning for each piece of CR-39NTDs before and after exposure are carried out. The results show a 95% retention of radon gas in the present technique during the exposure. Thus, the present technique is considered a better technique in terms of conservation of gas, because of the low rate of loss of the gas (4.915%), and this is the advantage of the present technique: keeping the concentration of gas during periods of exposure as much as possible. Deposition of the alpha particles, which are emitted from radon daughters, has reduced the number of platelets in both gender, and this is dependent on the energies of the alpha particles. Exposure time and the energy loss of the alpha particles within the target (blood and CR-39) through the atomic displacements are considered important parameters in the changes of platelet count. At 20-minute exposure time, the rate of absorption dose is 2.255 ± 0.11 μSv and the platelet count reduces rapidly.
