Under increasing compression, an unbuckled shell is in a metastable state which becomes increasingly precarious as the buckling load is approached. So to induce premature buckling, a lateral disturbance will have to overcome a decreasing energy barrier which reaches zero at buckling. Two archetypal problems that exhibit a severe form of this behavior are the axially-compressed cylindrical shell and the externally pressurized spherical shell. Focusing on the cylinder, a nondestructive technique was recently proposed to estimate the “shock-sensitivity” of a laboratory specimen using a lateral probe to measure the nonlinear load-deflection characteristic. If a symmetry-breaking bifurcation is encountered on the path, computer simulations showed how this can be suppressed by a controlled secondary probe. Here, we extend our understanding by assessing in general terms how a single control can capture remote saddle solutions: in particular, how a symmetric probe could locate an asymmetric solution. Then, more specifically, we analyze the spherical shell with point and ring probes, to test the procedure under challenging conditions to assess its range of applicability. Rather than a bifurcation, the spherical shell offers the challenge of a destabilizing fold (limit point) under the rigid control of the probe.

We establish a financial price process by continuum percolation system, in which we attribute price fluctuations to the investors’ attitudes towards the financial market, and consider the clusters in continuum percolation as the investors share the same investment opinion. We investigate the cross-correlations in two return time series, and analyze the multifractal behaviors in this relationship. Further, we study the corresponding behaviors for the real stock indexes of SSE and HSI as well as the liquid stocks pair of SPD and PAB by comparison. To quantify the multifractality in cross-correlation relationship, we employ multifractal detrended cross-correlation analysis method to perform an empirical research for the simulation data and the real markets data.

In this study, we determine the associated number of zeros for Abelian integrals in four classes of quadratic reversible centers of genus one. Based on the results of [Li et al., 2002b],, we prove that the upper bounds of the associated number of zeros for Abelian integrals with orbits formed by conics, cubics, quartics, and sextics, under polynomial perturbations of arbitrary degree $n$, depend linearly on $n$.

Nonlinear dynamic cryptosystems or chaos-based cryptosystems have been attracting a large amount of research since 1990. The critical aspect of cryptography is to face the growth of communication and to achieve the design of fast and secure cryptosystems. In this paper, we introduce three versions of a chaos-based cryptosystem based on a similar structure of the Zhang and Fridrich cryptosystems. Each version is composed of two layers: a confusion layer and a diffusion layer. The confusion layer is achieved by using a modified 2-D cat map to overcome the fixed-point problem and some other weaknesses, and also to increase the dynamic key space. The 32-bit logistic map is used as a diffusion layer for the first version, which is more robust than using it in 8-bit. In the other versions, the logistic map is replaced by a modified Finite Skew Tent Map (FSTM) for three reasons: to increase the nonlinearity properties of the diffusion layer, to overcome the fixed-point problem, and to increase the dynamic key space. Finally, all versions of the proposed cryptosystem are more resistant against known attacks and faster than Zhang cryptosystems. Moreover, the dynamic key space is much larger than the one used in Zhang cryptosystems. Performance and security analysis prove that the proposed cryptosystems are suitable for securing real-time applications.

In this article, a prey-predator system with Holling type II functional response for the predator population including prey refuge region has been analyzed. Also a harvesting effort has been considered for the predator population. The density-dependent mortality rate for the prey, predator and super predator has been considered. The equilibria of the proposed system have been determined. Local and global stabilities for the system have been discussed. We have used the analytic approach to derive the global asymptotic stabilities of the system. The maximal predator per capita consumption rate has been considered as a bifurcation parameter to evaluate Hopf bifurcation in the neighborhood of interior equilibrium point. Also, we have used fishing effort to harvest predator population of the system as a control to develop a dynamic framework to investigate the optimal utilization of the resource, sustainability properties of the stock and the resource rent is earned from the resource. Finally, we have presented some numerical simulations to verify the analytic results and the system has been analyzed through graphical illustrations.

Digital stabilization of unstable equilibria of linear systems may lead to small amplitude stochastic-like oscillations. We show that these vibrations can be related to a deterministic chaotic dynamics induced by sampling and quantization. A detailed analytical proof of chaos is presented for the case of a PD controlled oscillator: it is shown that there exists a finite attracting domain in the phase-space, the largest Lyapunov exponent is positive and the existence of a Smale horseshoe is also pointed out. The corresponding two-dimensional micro-chaos map is a multi-baker map, i.e. it consists of a finite series of baker’s maps.

In this paper, we propose a dual particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for parameter identification of chaotic systems. We also consider altering the search range of individual particles adaptively according to their objective function value. We consider both noiseless and noisy channels between the original system and the estimation system. Finally, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed dual PSO method by estimating the parameters of the Lorenz system using two different data acquisition schemes. Simulation results show that the proposed method always outperforms the traditional PSO algorithm.

In this paper, we present two classes of lopsided systems and discuss their analytic integrability. The analytic integrable conditions are obtained by using the method of inverse integrating factor and theory of rotated vector field. For the first class of systems, we show that there are $n+4$ small-amplitude limit cycles enclosing the origin of the systems for $n\ge 2$, and ten limit cycles for $n=1$. For the second class of systems, we prove that there exist $n+4$ small-amplitude limit cycles around the origin of the systems for $n\ge 2$, and nine limit cycles for $n=1$.

In the present paper, we investigate the chaotic implications of a seven-equation model of the business cycle. The main distinguishing features of the model are related to: (a) the role played by the bargaining power in the process of income redistribution; (b) the consideration of hysteresis effects on workers’ consumption demand; (c) the effect of public expenditure on labor productivity. In addition, the role played by the agents’ memory on the actual dynamics of the economic system, with particular regard to their learning-by-doing process, is particularly emphasized. Under all these assumptions, the system exhibits a rich and complex phenomenology, characterized by a number of transitions to chaos (in particular via sequences of period doubling bifurcations), aperiodic behavior, bistability, tristability, etc. We maintain that our analysis takes us another step forward in the building of a more general model of the business cycle. In particular, the model we propose may be of help in the explanation of some peculiar features of advanced capitalist economies, with particular regard to the role played by the State in the determination of agents’ disposable income, to the debt dynamics of the various macroagents, and to the main dilemmas of economic policy. More in general, the main lesson one learns from our investigation is that “disequilibrium paths”, characterized by “complicated” dynamics which, more often than not, takes the form of aperiodic motion, should be considered as the “normal” state of the system.

This paper addresses local and global bifurcations that may appear in electrical power systems, such as DC microgrids, which recently has attracted interest from the electrical engineering society. Most sources in these networks are voltage-type and operate in parallel. In such configuration, the basic technique for stabilizing the bus voltage is the so-called droop control. The main contribution of this work is a codimension-two bifurcation analysis of a small DC microgrid considering the droop control gain and the power processed by the load as bifurcation parameters. The codimension-two bifurcation set leads to practical rules for achieving a robust droop control design. Moreover, the bifurcation analysis also offers a better understanding of the dynamics involved in the problem and how to avoid possible instabilities. Simulation results are presented in order to illustrate the bifurcation analysis.

In this paper, we have considered Time-Frequency Analysis (TFA) and Poincaré Surface of Section (PSS) for the study of the phase space structure of nonlinear dynamical system. We have examined a sample of orbits taken in the framework of Circular Restricted Three-Body Problem (CRTBP). We have computed ridge-plots (i.e. time-frequency landscape) using the phase of the continuous wavelet transform. Clear visualization of resonance trappings and the transitions is an important feature of this method, which is presented using ridge-plots. The identification between periodic and quasi-periodic, chaotic sticky and nonsticky and regular and chaotic orbits are done in comparatively less time and with less computational effort. The spatial case of Circular Restricted Three-Body problem is considered to show the strength of Time-Frequency Analysis to higher dimensional systems. Also, with the help of ridge-plots, we can visualize the phenomenon of transient chaos.

In this paper, we extend the well-known Melnikov method for smooth systems to a class of periodic perturbed planar hybrid piecewise-smooth systems. In this class, the switching manifold is a straight line which divides the plane into two zones, and the dynamics in each zone is governed by a smooth system. When a trajectory reaches the separation line, then a reset map is applied instantaneously before entering the trajectory in the other zone. We assume that the unperturbed system is a piecewise Hamiltonian system which possesses a piecewise-smooth homoclinic solution transversally crossing the switching manifold. Then, we study the persistence of the homoclinic orbit under a nonautonomous periodic perturbation and the reset map. To achieve this objective, we obtain the Melnikov function to measure the distance of the perturbed stable and unstable manifolds and present the theorem for homoclinic bifurcations for the class of planar hybrid piecewise-smooth systems. Furthermore, we employ the obtained Melnikov function to detect the chaotic boundaries for a concrete planar hybrid piecewise-smooth system.

Recently, many rare chaotic systems have been found including chaotic systems with no equilibria. However, it is surprising that such a system can exhibit multiscroll chaotic sea. In this paper, a novel no-equilibrium system with multiscroll hidden chaotic sea is introduced. Besides having multiscroll chaotic sea, this system has two more interesting properties. Firstly, it is conservative (which is a rare feature in three-dimensional chaotic flows) but not Hamiltonian. Secondly, it has a coexisting set of nested tori. There is a hidden torus which coexists with the chaotic sea. This new system is investigated through numerical simulations such as phase portraits, Lyapunov exponents, Poincaré map, and frequency spectra. Furthermore, the feasibility of such a system is verified through circuital implementation.

In this paper, we consider a model created by diffraction in periodic media. The study of the traveling wave solutions for this model derives a planar dynamical system with a singular straight line. On the basis of the investigation of the dynamical behavior and bifurcations of solutions of the planar dynamical systems, we obtain all possible explicit exact parametric representations of solutions (including solitary wave solutions, periodic wave solutions, periodic peakon solutions, compactons, etc.) under different parameter conditions.

In this paper, we investigate pattern formation in Keller–Segel chemotaxis models over a multidimensional bounded domain subject to homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. It is shown that the positive homogeneous steady state loses its stability as chemoattraction rate $\chi$ increases. Then using Crandall–Rabinowitz local theory with $\chi$ being the bifurcation parameter, we obtain the existence of nonhomogeneous steady states of the system which bifurcate from this homogeneous steady state. Stability of the bifurcating solutions is also established through rigorous and detailed calculations. Our results provide a selection mechanism of stable wavemode which states that the only stable bifurcation branch must have a wavemode number that minimizes the bifurcation value. Finally, we perform extensive numerical simulations on the formation of stable steady states with striking structures such as boundary spikes, interior spikes, stripes, etc. These nontrivial patterns can model cellular aggregation that develop through chemotactic movements in biological systems.

It was shown in [Li & Xiao, 2007] that in a predator–prey model of Leslie type with simplified Holling type IV functional response some complex bifurcations can occur simultaneously for some values of parameters, such as codimension 1 subcritical Hopf bifurcation and codimension 2 Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation. In this paper, we show that for the same model there exists a unique degenerate positive equilibrium which is a degenerate Bogdanov–Takens singularity (focus case) of codimension 3 for other values of parameters. We prove that the model exhibits degenerate focus type Bogdanov–Takens bifurcation of codimension 3 around the unique degenerate positive equilibrium. Numerical simulations, including the coexistence of three hyperbolic positive equilibria, two limit cycles, bistability states (one stable equilibrium and one stable limit cycle, or two stable equilibria), tristability states (two stable equilibria and one stable limit cycle), a stable limit cycle enclosing a homoclinic loop, a homoclinic loop enclosing an unstable limit cycle, or a stable limit cycle enclosing three unstable hyperbolic positive equilibria for various parameter values, confirm the theoretical results.

An interesting question is whether the intrinsic complexity of the gliders in $D$-dimensional cellular automata could be quantitatively analyzed in rigorously mathematical sense. In this paper, by introducing the $D$-dimensional symbolic space, some fundamental dynamical properties of $D$-dimensional shift map are explored in a subtle way. The purpose of this article is to present an accurate characterization of complex symbolic dynamics of gliders in Conway’s game of life. A series of dynamical properties of gliders on their concrete subsystems are investigated by means of the directed graph representation and transition matrix. More specifically, the gliders here are topologically mixing and possess the positive topological entropy on their subsystems. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the method presented in this paper is also applicable to other gliders in different $D$ dimensions.

Alternate quadratic systems

where $a$ and $a_{\ast }$ are different parameters, seem to be interval maps in a range of the parameter values. However, after a careful graphical analysis of their bifurcation diagrams we conclude that this is true only for system B, but not for system A. In system A we find a hidden and nonstandard bifurcation diagram (“hidden” because it is not visible at normal resolution and “nonstandard” because the bifurcation diagram is empty for some ranges of the parameter values). The different behavior of the underlying critical polynomial in the range of parameter values in both alternate quadratic systems explains why the hidden and nonstandard bifurcation diagram is present in system A and not in system B. The analysis of the Lyapunov exponent also shows both the existence and the different behavior of the hidden bifurcation diagram of system A.

A chaotic attractor solution of the Lorenz system [Lorenz, 1963] with foliated structure is topologically characterized. Its template permits to both summarize the organization of its periodic orbits and detail the topology of the solution as a branched manifold. A template of an attractor solution of the Chen system [Chen & Ueta, 1999] with a similar foliated structure is also established.

Recently, we looked more closely into the Rabinovich–Fabrikant system, after a decade of study [Danca & Chen, 2004], discovering some new characteristics such as cycling chaos, transient chaos, chaotic hidden attractors and a new kind of saddle-like attractor. In addition to extensive and accurate numerical analysis, on the assumptive existence of heteroclinic orbits, we provide a few of their approximations.
