Multiobjective particle swarm optimization algorithms (MOPSO) have been broadly adopted to solve multiobjective optimization problems. In our previous work, a cultural MOPSO with dynamic flight parameters had been introduced in which some parameters had to be tuned. In this paper, the sensitivity analysis of the cultural MOPSO with respect to nine tuning parameters is investigated. The extensive study is performed on different sets of tuning parameters over six benchmark test problems. The additive binary epsilon indicator is adopted as a mean to compare every two algorithms. The graphical box plot comparisons demonstrate the robustness of cultural MOPSO.

In present works authors have developed a computerized classification procedure for tumor mass in breasts using digital mammogram. The process implements genetic algorithm and hybrid neuro-fuzzy approaches to classify tumor masses into benign and malignant group in order to assist the physicians for treatment planning. The classification process is based on accurate analysis of shape and margin of tumor mass appearing in breast. The shape features using Fourier descriptors introduce a large number of feature vectors. Thus, to classify different boundaries, a standard multilayer preceptor needs large number of inputs. Simultaneously, to train the network, a large number of training cycles and huge memory are also required. It is obvious that a complicated structure invites the problem of over learning and misclassification. In proposed methodology genetic algorithm (GA) has been used for the searching of effective input feature vectors. Adaptive neuro-fuzzy model has been used for final classification of different boundaries of tumor masses. The proposed technique is an innovative soft computing approach that removes the limitation of conventional neural networks and indicates a promising direction of adaptation in a changing environment. The classification system utilizes a Euclidean distance function to detect the belongingness of masses in benign and in malignant classes along with degree of benignancy/malignancy. Presently 200 digitized mammograms from MIAS and other databases have been considered for the experiment and which have shown an average of approximately 86% correct classification as compared with clinical data with a highest rate of 88.9%.

A lip-reading technique that identifies visemes from visual data only and without evaluating the corresponding acoustic signals is presented. The technique is based on vertical components of the optical flow (OF) analysis and these are classified using support vector machines (SVM). The OF is decomposed into multiple non-overlapping fixed scale blocks and statistical features of each block are computed for successive video frames of an utterance. This technique performs automatic temporal segmentation (i.e., determining the start and the end of an utterance) of the utterances, achieved by pair-wise pixel comparison method, which evaluates the differences in intensity of corresponding pixels in two successive frames. The experiments were conducted on a database of 14 visemes taken from seven subjects and the accuracy tested using five and ten fold cross validation for binary and multiclass SVM respectively to determine the impact of subject variations. Unlike other systems in the literature, the results indicate that the proposed method is more robust to inter-subject variations with high sensitivity and specificity for 12 out of 14 visemes. Potential applications of such a system include human computer interface (HCI) for mobility-impaired users, lip reading mobile phones, in-vehicle systems, and improvement of speech based computer control in noisy environment.

To improve the modeling performance — such as accuracy and robustness — of artificial neural network (ANN), a new combined ANN and corresponding optimal modeling method are proposed in this paper. The combined ANN consists of two parallel sub-networks, and methods such as "early stopping" and "data resampling" are jointly used in training process to reduce the sensitivity of the modeling performance to its structure. To achieve better performance, the structure of combined ANN is proposed to be adjusted dynamically according to the information of expectation error and real error. Simulation experimental results verify that the optimal modeling method using combined ANN can achieve much better performance than the traditional method.

The time series prediction of avian influenza epidemics is a complex issue, because avian influenza has latent seasonality which is difficult to identify. Although researchers have applied a neural network (NN) model and the Box-Jenkins model for the seasonal epidemic series research area, the results are limited. In this study, we develop a new prediction seasonal auto-regressive-based support vector regression (SAR-SVR) model which combines the seasonal auto-regressive (SAR) model with a support vector regression (SVR) model to address this prediction problem to overcome existing limitations. Fast Fourier transformation is also merged into this method to identify the latent seasonality inside the time series. The experiments demonstrate that the developed SAR-SVR method out-performs SVR, Box-Jenkins models and two layer feed forward NN model-both in accuracy and stability in the avian influenza epidemic disease time series prediction.

Fuzzy Logic is a multi-valued logic model based on fuzzy set theory, which may be considered as an extension of Boolean Logic. One of the fields of this theory is the Compensatory Fuzzy Logic, based on the removal of some axioms in order to achieve a sensitive and idempotent multi-valued system. This system is based on a quadruple of continuous operators: conjunction, disjunction, order and negation. In this work we present a new model of Compensatory Fuzzy Logic based on a different set of operators, conjunction and disjunction, than the ones used in the original definition, and then prove that this new model satisfies the required axioms. As an example, we present an application to decision-making, comparing the results against the ones based on the original model.
