This paper uses bibliometric methods to review the research on makerspaces. The objective of the study was to document the growth and geographic distribution of makerspace literature, identify the main authors, documents. In addition to this, the study also combined two bibliometric analysis methods, co-citation analysis and co-word analysis to identify the intellectual structure of the makerspace knowledge base and the evolution of research themes over time. A total of 654 documents related to makerspaces between 2012 and 2020 were identified from the Scopus database. The review found that research base on makerspace is starting to grow from 2017 onwards with an accelerating growth rate, however, the published studies are mainly from USA and Europe. The paper also lists the most cited documents, the influential sources of publications and the main authors working on this area. The review also identified five research clusters using co-citation analysis that have emerged over time which are “innovation and development in makerspaces”, “child development in makerspaces”, “learning and STEM education in makerspaces”, “implementation of makerspaces in education”, and “university makerspaces”. Another major finding highlighted “innovation, design, and creativity”, “engineering curriculum”, “skill development”, “computer programming knowledge”, and “learning, collaboration and community development” as the five main research themes using the co-word analysis. These findings provide a robust roadmap for further investigation in this research field.

Artificial intelligence (AI) serves as a technological driver for business model innovation by guiding decisions and automating services, thereby leveraging efficiency-enhancing and profitable business practices. Especially in the electric power industry, a multitude of start-ups have entered the market offering disruptive AI-based services. However, there has been little research to date on what concrete business models result from the diffusion of AI and how these might be classified. In view of this research gap, this paper contributes to a better understanding of start-ups in the electric power industry that use AI technologies by systematically developing a business model taxonomy. In addition, we conducted 12 semi-structured interviews with domain experts for the evaluation step and validated the robustness of the taxonomy based on cluster analysis to identify common business model archetypes. Finally, we derived and discussed the academic and practical implications of our research and highlighted future research avenues.

Growing importance of technology and digitalization, leaded by globalization, has changed the nature of competition. Innovation becomes evident in that competitive environment, and firms began to transform their human resource capabilities and functions in that direction. It is commonly accepted that the competitive advantage depends on mostly efficient and effective utilization of human resources. Thanks to the communication technologies, social media evolved into the most-preferred method to reach high qualified human resource. Although firms have been active in social media networks for a long time, they have started to use this medium for human resource management purposes, such as internal communication, career management and recruiting process, recently. LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ are primarily addressed social media tools which are used frequently in human resource management processes. In this respect, this study aims to examine the social media tools used in human resources management processes and the effects of social media use in human resource management processes on the human resources management performance and firm’s overall performance. The survey was conducted on human resource managers of 122 firms operating in manufacturing and service industry in Turkey. Data obtained from 122 human resource management managers were analyzed through the SPSS 21.00 statistical packet program. Descriptive analyzes, factor analysis, reliability analysis and correlation analysis have been conducted. Proposed relations were tested through regression analyzes utilizing Hayes’ PROCESS Macro. Research findings displayed that human resources management managers use social media tools frequently for recruitment and employee branding processes, and prefer mostly LinkedIn in all processes of human resources management. Furthermore, regression analyzes results revealed that human resources management performance mediates the effect of social media use at human resources management, on firm’s overall performance. The issue of social media use at human resources management have been examined in recent years and there is a limited number of research on that issue. Thus, this study examining social media use at human resources management and its performance effect is expected to contribute to literature.

This work discusses the generally accepted idea that public–private cooperation only generates unilateral transfers of knowledge from public research and development (R&D) institutions to industrial firms and suggests that there are collaborative patterns in which the generation of knowledge is joint and it is characterized by the presence of bidirectional flows of knowledge. Through a multi-case study, this aspect is investigated in three public–private partnerships in the Argentine biopharmaceutical sector, focusing in particular on the knowledge flows and the identification of possible learning processes that the public part develops when cooperating with firms. The main findings and contributions of the work are that knowledge in the hands of the industry flows towards the public part, strengthening its R&D capabilities, that all the benefits received by the public part can be understood in terms of learning and that science–industry cooperation is compatible with the enrichment of the public research agenda.

This paper investigates the relevance of patents as a competitive advantage with regard to the luxury industry. Within the framework of an explorative research design, more than two thousand patents were analyzed, using the international patent classification (IPC) to cluster those patents. The analysis shows that the sole ownership of patents as a resource is not sufficient to achieve business success. In addition, the findings suggest a two-sided relevance of patents within the luxury goods industry as two main groups can be identified: First, traditional manufacturers focusing more on craftmanship, secrecy, and tradition than on novelties and patents. Second, large business groups and high technology businesses dominating the IPC group G04 and emphasizing on the latest technology as well as on patents. Furthermore, the internationalization is also reflected in the patent applications: European patents within category G04 have gained in importance over the last 20 years, while national patents have declined.

The purpose of the study is to answer to the following Research Question (RQ): “What are the perception and the application of ICTs for e-tourism in different LTDs in Campania?” To answer the RQ a qualitative study was done with a questionnaire to 144 managers of Local Tourist Districts (LTDs) in Campania, Italy. The questionnaire was summited in 2017. The acquired data were processed using the factor analyses. The study of the region’s 12 LTDs allowed for the identification of three district typologies i.e. three homogeneous groups. The one, defined as proactive, exhibited positive results thanks to the skills and competencies of its managers. By contrast, despite the wealth of attractions, the other districts did not fare as well mostly due to management inadequacies and organizational culture. The research was limited to only 12 LTDs located in Italy. Possible measures to address operational and cultural problems in the region have been identified in implementation of ITCs’ applications to foster e-tourism and the local entrepreneurial ecosystem as well as the accumulation of knowledge to enhance the awareness of the education as a strategic factor [, J. Moreover, at the national and international level, other strategic elements can be identified in: analysis of good practices and cross contamination of proactive district managers with the participated and insensitive district managers.It is the first research paper on the Campania districts since their inception. The analysis of the phenomenon may be extended to other countries too.

Innovation, especially digital innovation, is indispensable for organizations that want to remain competitive. Employees play a crucial role in developing innovations, but the use of digital technologies for innovation methods that foster employee-driven innovation has rarely been researched. Using a sample of 215 participants and two innovation methods (i.e. digital, non-digital), we show that employees value a digital innovation more if they are involved in the digital innovation, the involvement follows a structured process, and the digital innovation process uses digital technologies. These results have implications for both practice and the innovation and information systems literatures.

Cross-industry innovation (CII) aims to reuse existing solutions by leveraging the innovative power of partners’ knowledge from another industry. CII is a key concept for identifying and adapting potential (disruptive) innovations and technologies and gains importance in recent years. To enable CII in companies, we examine the topic holistically. First, we summarize the existing literature, including frameworks of CII. Second, we conduct expert interviews in order to consider also the practical perspective. We then consolidate the results into a framework with a structured procedure and detailed methods, which can be used by companies. Our contribution has several implications for practice and research. For practice, we derive five recommendations for actions for companies that already use or plan to use CII. For the scientific community, we summarize the state of research on CII and present our framework, which can serve as a starting point for further research.
