Purpose: This paper investigates and compares challenges and success factors within different supply chain ERPs used globally across humanitarian and private organizations in Africa, Asia, Canada, Australia, Europe, and the Americas. Eighteen challenges and 27 success factors were selected from literature published between 2015 and 2020 to determine whether they are equally relevant globally in the private and humanitarian sectors.

Design/methodology/approach: The research utilized an anonymous online questionnaire advertised on different social media websites and completed by 50 humanitarian supply chain professionals and 53 private sector professionals worldwide. The collected data was analyzed using a descriptive statistic–crosstabulation analysis to show the differences or similarities in supply chain professionals’ opinions from humanitarian and private organizations. Additionally, the hypotheses were tested by using the Mann–Whitney Test.

Findings: Findings revealed that all the examined success factors were supported except one, which was similar in both sectors. However, the challenges during the implementation of ERPs differ in these two sectors — with four success factors not supported in the humanitarian sector and nine not supported challenges in the private sector.

Originality: This study’s significance is that, as per the researchers’ knowledge, such a comparative study was never done before, and it will allow both sectors’ professionals to understand all the elements mentioned above better and integrate them while implementing supply chain ERPs.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in studying design thinking from a capability perspective, given the need for deep implementation at the organizational mindset level. However, the impact of the cognitivist paradigm on design thinking has led to a narrow conceptualization of it as a problem-solving process, which overlooks some of its essential capacities. As a result, the ability of design thinking to extract the real capabilities of designers has been weakened. To address this shortcoming, this study focused on extracting designerly capabilities from the original resource by engaging with designers themselves. In-depth interviews were conducted, and the results were thematically analyzed. The findings reveal that designerly capabilities are significantly different in depth and scope from those derived from the conventional academic view of design thinking. The study identifies some key features of design thinking as practiced by real designers, as follows: Engaging with multiple layers of a problem, Skipping and releasing ideas, Adjusting iteratively, Recognizing patterns, Translating concepts, Incorporating and extending existing solutions, and Balancing ambiguity and clarity, as well as Envisioning and imagining possibilities, Expanding the scope of inquiry and Facilitating confrontation and feedback. These features can be grouped into four dimensions: (1) reflection, (2) generation, (3) inspiration and (4) engagement, which show the dynamic capability of design thinking. This complements previous research and suggests ways to improve the innovation potential of design thinking in organizations.

Prior studies indicate that firms yield varying results while adapting to open innovation (OI). They suggest an optimum OI level using the concepts of external search breadth and depth, whose antecedents’ relationships with innovation performance (IP) have been inadequately examined. This study explores how information technology capability (ITC) and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) influence a firm’s external search strategies and impact its IP. A survey of listed German firms ($n=146$) found no support for a curvilinear relationship between open external search strategies and IP. Moreover, the assumption that ITC positively affects the relationship between external search strategy openness and IP was unsupported, proposing a negative moderating impact of ITC. The study observes that EO has differential moderating and direct effects on external search strategy effectiveness and its collective impact on IP.

Recent research has demonstrated that innovation is a factor that can add a competitive differential among small- and medium-sized enterprises. The literature presents several types of companies that have invested in the process of organizational innovation. Recently, one type of company that has drawn attention is called “graduated”, that is, one that went through the incubation process and received support from an incubator. Research shows that graduated companies (GCs) have enough competencies to develop themselves in their market. This research analyzes the level of organizational innovation in nine GCs in an emerging economy, such as Brazil. To achieve the proposed objective, this study (i) identifies the profile of these companies; (ii) identifies the proposed innovation actions; (iii) applies the innovation radar and (iv) analyzes the dimensions proposed by the innovation radar. The results revealed that the GCs are occasional innovators, with an average of 3.60. Among the nine companies analyzed, seven presented averages above 3.0, considered as occasional innovators and the other two companies, with averages a little above 2.0, were analyzed as little or not at all innovative. GCs, in their majority, are innovative companies. From the theoretical perspective, the results highlight the possibility of improvements and the suggestion of new dimensions for the innovation radar. In the practical scenario, the participating GCs were able to reflect on themes and day-to-day situations that, for lack of time, or even planning, were not analyzed.

This paper has presented a case of the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in telecommunications in Pakistan. Through an exploratory case study, it has explored the need for IoT technology, the role of the telecom sector in IoT development, IoT strategies and business models adopted, challenges confronted, and benefits gained by telecom operators in Pakistan. The business-centric, customer-centric, and country-centric approaches were the basis for IoT technology adoption by telecom operators. By providing networks and connectivity, the telecom sector has played a significant role in the development of IoT. The telecom operators have developed their business strategies and used different business models to capitalize on their digital enabler role in the IoT domain. They also have faced challenges related to technological integration, infrastructure resources, and human resources when adopting IoT technology. The benefits realized by telecom operators were improved operational planning and processes, increased productivity, enhanced organizational performance, and IoT knowledge. These findings can guide practitioners, regulators, and policymakers in understanding the opportunities and implications of IoT in telecommunications.

Purpose: Global competition, individualized customer requirements, and volatile market conditions create an environment conducive to agile new product development (ANPD). This research seeks to identify the key factors that influence ANPD adoption along with the development of a conceptual framework for the identified factors.

Design/methodology: Through a literature review, eight factors having 47 sub-factors pertinent to ANPD adoption and its performance improvement were identified. Considering all of these factors, the development of conceptual framework and research hypotheses was carried out. A structured questionnaire was used to collect 118 online responses from both domestic and foreign subject matter experts. The structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was used for validation of the conceptual framework along with the research hypotheses testing.

Findings: This study supported six hypotheses: “Technology management competencies”, “Product development competencies”, “Organizational management competencies”, “Human resource competencies”, “Software management competencies”, and “Policy management competencies”. These supported hypotheses influence ANPD adoption significantly. However, the analysis did not support the two more positive factors, namely “Integrated system competencies” and “Supply chain competencies”, showcasing the necessity for a better understanding of them among the product development experts.

Research limitations: As the proposed methodology relies on qualitative data, it is somewhat complex and time-consuming. While SEM can verify the linear relationship, a hybrid approach involving the SEM-MCDM technique can be employed to comprehend the impact of ANPD adoption and performance improvement.

Practical implications: The findings of this study will assist product development experts, manufacturing executives, and managers in developing effective ANPD adoption policies. It will help in improving the new product development success rate and highlighting the causes of poor performance.

Originality/value: This is a one-of-a-kind and highly beneficial structural modeling-based decision-making tool. This framework can be effective across multiple domains, and incidents of ANPD adoption failure can be mitigated.

This study used TAM to achieve the objective of examining the impact of perceived ease of use (PEOU), perceived usefulness (PU), interactivity, perceived value (PV), and critical mass on business performance (BP) mediating buy social media marketing (SMM) adoption. An online survey was distributed to 174 participants in Jordanian homemade food start-ups. AMOS was used to evaluate a sample of 152 valid surveys. This study had seven hypotheses, all of which were supported. The results highlight that PEOU, PU, interactivity, PV, and critical mass have a significant positive impact on SMM adoption. Furthermore, this study found that SMM adoption has a significant impact on business performance. In addition, this study contributes to the existing knowledge related to SMM adoption and is valuable to enterprises.

With the rapidly changing business environment, the dynamic capability of an enterprise begins with sensing and grasping technology opportunities. Considering that the knowledge gaps between science and technology hinder the exploration of technology opportunities, previous studies proposed methods to extract technology opportunities by identifying the knowledge gaps between science and technology literature. This study improves upon previous methods for identifying knowledge fields contained in the literature by introducing a deep learning-based clustering approach. This study also proposes a way to reduce experts’ workloads in determining gaps in the field between science and technology literature. The key idea of the proposed method is to include technologies other than the technology in question. Additionally, pyrolysis technology can convert plastic wastes into useful materials and is considered a green technology. Therefore, this study applies our improved method to explore the technology opportunities of pyrolysis technology. The results show that our method can effectively identify technology opportunities. In the case of plastic wastes, the results show that recovering carbon fibers from plastic wastes and recycling metals from e-waste plastics are expected to be prevailing technological fields.

This study aimed to investigate and provide insight into the drivers and motivations behind users’ intentions for using car dashcams. The study utilized a purposive sampling technique with a sample size of 225 and obtained responses through a structured questionnaire. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was performed to verify the proposed hypotheses. The findings demonstrated that the perceived quality of the system, the quality of the information, and the quality of the interaction positively influenced the perceived ease of use and usefulness of using car dashcams. Attitude and behavioral intention were affected by perceived ease of use and usefulness, while perceived usefulness had no influence on intention to use car dashcams. While hedonic motivation and price value impacted behavioral intention, social intention did not affect it. Attitude was found to fully mediate the path between perceived usefulness and behavioral intention. The outcomes of the study incorporate a considerable amount of knowledge into the adoption behavior of telematics literature by integrating prevalent technology adoption models into a unified model: The information system success model (ISS), technology acceptance model (TAM), and unified theory of acceptance and use of technology 2 (UTAUT2). The findings provide valuable insights for marketers, the dash cam industry, and policymakers to enhance their understanding of the critical factors affecting the adoption of car dashcams, which can assist in customizing their marketing campaigns and policies to encourage the usage of dashcams, leading to improved road safety and safe driving behavior.

Since the 2000s, the interest around smart cities continues to grow due to the increasing digitalization, urbanization, and marketing of the smart city idea by tech companies. A central characteristic of smart cities is their use of digital technologies. One of these technologies that is increasingly applied in smart cities is the blockchain. Re-search on blockchain and how it is used within smart cities has grown significantly over the last years. Nowadays, research on blockchain in smart cities is a heterogeneous research field with contributions from many different disciplines. This paper therefore seeks to provide an analysis and overview of the emergent research field of the application of blockchain technology in smart cities. We do so by conducting a bibliometric analysis of research published between 2014 and 2021. As results, we give a thematic and bibliometric overview of this research field. This includes an overview of the past research on blockchain for smart cities, its key topics, and main areas of research. Furthermore, by giving an overview of potential future research questions, we aim to provide researchers with a platform for further developments within this field.
