We consider the consequences of applying general relativity to the description of the dynamics of a galaxy, given the observed flattened rotation curves. The galaxy is modeled as a stationary axially symmetric pressure-free fluid. In spite of the weak gravitational field and the nonrelativistic source velocities, the mathematical system is still seen to be nonlinear. It is shown that the rotation curves for various galaxies as examples are consistent with the mass density distributions of the visible matter within essentially flattened disks. This obviates the need for a massive halo of exotic dark matter. We determine that the mass density for the luminous threshold as tracked in the radial direction is 10^-21.75kg · m^-3 for these galaxies and conjecture that this will be the case for other galaxies yet to be analyzed. We present a velocity dispersion test to determine the extent, if of any significance, of matter that may lie beyond the visible/HI region. This is determined by examining the rotation curves at different galactic latitudes, bringing into consideration the global dynamical structure of the galaxy. The demand for global consistency applies not only to our own but also to all proposed models and theories. Various comments and criticisms from colleagues are addressed.

We provide a straightforward computational scheme for the equivariant local mirror symmetry of curves, i.e. mirror symmetry for for k ≥ 1, and detail related methods for dealing with mirror symmetry of non-nef toric varieties, based on the theorems of Refs. 2 and 13. The basic tools are equivariant I functions and their Birkhoff factorization.

Recently, with an enlightening treatment, Baskaran and Grishchuk have shown the presence and importance of the so-called "magnetic" components of gravitational waves (GW's), which have to be taken into account in the context of the total response functions of interferometers for GW's propagating from arbitrary directions. In this paper the analysis of the response functions for the magnetic components is generalized in its full frequency dependence, while in the work of Baskaran and Grishchuk the response functions were computed only in the approximation of wavelength much larger than the linear dimensions of the interferometer. It is also shown that the response functions to the magnetic components grow at high frequencies, differently from the values of the response functions to the well-known ordinary components that decrease at high frequencies. Thus the magnetic components could in principle become the dominant part of the signal at high frequencies. This is important for a potential detection of the signal at high frequencies and confirms that the magnetic contributions must be taken into account in the data analysis. More, the fact that the response functions of the magnetic components grow at high frequencies shows that, in principle, the frequency-range of Earth-based interferometers could extend to frequencies over 10000 Hz.

We define new coordinates using the family of accelerated Rindler observers in Minkowski space–time and study the spatial sections (hypersurfaces of simultaneity) adapted to the noninertial frame that arises from our definition. We show that the geometry of the spatial sections is not Euclidean. Owing to this feature, the new noninertial frame can be employed to illustrate, in a simple way, the connection between acceleration and non-Euclidean geometry in the relativistic context.

Using an effective model for the quantum chromodynamics we study the color deconfinement effects on the chiral transition. We argue that effects of the color deconfinement are important in the chiral limit. As an example we consider in detail the case of two flavors of massless quarks and find that the corresponding chiral transition can be of first order due to the effects of color deconfinement. This is contrary to the conventional expectations that 2-flavor chiral transition is of second order.

One of the promising sources of gravitational radiation is a binary system composed of compact stars. It is an important question of how the rotation of the bodies and the eccentricity of the orbit affect the detectable signal. Here we present a method to evaluate the gravitational wave polarization states for inspiralling compact binaries with comparable mass. We consider eccentric orbits and the spin-orbit contribution in the case of one spinning object up to 1.5 post-Newtonian order. For circular orbits our results are in agreement with existing calculations.

A spatially homogeneous cosmological model with flat geometry filled with perfect fluid is studied in the presence of a variable cosmological "constant." Einstein's field equations are solved by using the "gamma-law" equation of state p = (γ-1)ρ, where the adiabatic parameter γ, varies with cosmic time. The functional form of γ, which is assumed to be the function of scale factor R as proposed by Carvalho, is used to describe the early evolution of universe with variable cosmological "constant." A unified description of early universe is given in which an inflationary phase is followed by radiation-dominated phase. It has been observed that the solutions are compatible with the result of recent observations. Exact expressions for the look-back time, proper distance, luminosity distance and angular diameter distance versus redshift are derived and their meaning are discussed in detail. The various physical aspects of the models are also discussed.

We show that a recent analysis in the strong coupling limit of the λϕ⁴ theory proves that this theory is indeed trivial giving in this limit the expansion of a free quantum field theory. We can get in this way the propagator with the renormalization constant and the renormalized mass. As expected the theory in this limit has the same spectrum as a harmonic oscillator. Some comments about triviality of the Yang–Mills theory in the infrared are also given.

We observe and study new nonlinear global space–time symmetries of the full ghost + matter action of RNS superstring theory. We show that these surprising new symmetries are generated by the special worldsheet currents (physical vertex operators) of RNS superstring theory, violating the equivalence of superconformal ghost pictures. We review the questions of BRST-invariance and nontriviality of picture-dependent vertex operators and show their relation to hidden space–time symmetries and hidden space–time dimensions. In particular, we relate the space–time transformations, induced by picture-dependent currents, to the symmetries observed in the 2T physics approach.
