A study for applying data extrapolation technique based on wave superposition method (WSM) is proposed to overcome the disadvantages of near-field acoustical holography (NAH). Unlike conformal NAH, where the measurement surface surrounds the entire structure, in the patch holography the measurement surface needs only be approximately as large as the patch on the structure surface where the reconstruction is required. At first, a microphone array is used to acquire the sound pressure field radiated from a vibrator; then a beamforming method is adopted to locate sound sources; after that, a serial of equivalent sources are collocated around these sound sources; at last, a data extrapolation technique based on WSM is applied to extend the measurement aperture and reconstruct the sound field. Since the data extrapolation algorithm requires the inversion of Green's function matrix which may be ill-conditioned, Tikhonov regularization method is used to invert it, and the value of the regularization parameter is determined by the L-curve criteria. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated by numerical simulation with two pulse ball model, and also experiment is carried out in a semi-anechoic chamber using two sound boxes. The results confirm that the exterior sound field can be accurately reconstructed with few iterative times and the reconstruction error is sufficiently suppressed by the proposed method.

In this paper, a new technique is presented for structural acoustic analysis in the case of nonconforming acoustic–solid interface meshes. We first describe a simple method for coupling nonconforming acoustic–acoustic meshes, and then show that a similar approach, together with the coupling operators from conforming analysis, can also be applied to nonconforming structural acoustics. In the case of acoustic–acoustic interfaces, the continuity of acoustic pressure is enforced with a set of linear constraint equations. For structural acoustic interfaces, the same set of linear constraints is used, in conjunction with the weak formulation and the coupling operators that are commonly used in conforming structural acoustics. The constraint equations are subsequently eliminated using a static condensation procedure. We show that our method is equally applicable to time domain, frequency domain, and coupled eigenvalue analysis for structural acoustics. Numerical examples in both the time and frequency domains are presented to verify the methods.

We discuss the inverse problem associated with the identification of the location and shape of a scatterer fully embedded in a homogeneous halfplane, using scant surficial measurements of its response to probing scalar waves. The typical applications arise in soils under shear (SH) waves (antiplane motion), or in acoustic fluids under pressure waves. Accordingly, we use measurements of either the Dirichlet-type (displacements), or of the Neumann-type (fluid velocities), to steer the localization and detection processes, targeting rigid and sound-hard objects, respectively. The computational approach for localizing single targets is based on partial-differential-equation-constrained optimization ideas, extending our recent work from the full-¹ to the half-plane case. To improve on the ability of the optimizer to converge to the true shape and location we employ an amplitude-based misfit functional, and embed the inversion process within a frequency- and directionality-continuation scheme, which seem to alleviate solution multiplicity. We use the apparatus of total differentiation to resolve the target's evolving shape during inversion iterations over the shape parameters, à la.^2,3 We report numerical results betraying algorithmic robustness for both the SH and acoustic cases, and for a variety of targets, ranging from circular and elliptical, to potato-, and kite-shaped scatterers.

A methodology to perform computational aeroacoustics (CAA) of viscous low speed flows in the framework of stabilized finite element methods is presented. A hybrid CAA procedure is followed that makes use of Lighthill's acoustic analogy in the frequency domain. The procedure has been conceptually divided into three steps. In the first one, the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations are solved to obtain the flow velocity field. In the second step, Lighthill's acoustic source term is computed from this velocity field and then Fourier transformed to the frequency domain. Finally, the acoustic pressure field is obtained by solving the corresponding inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation. All equations in the formulation are solved using subgrid scale stabilized finite element methods. The main ideas of the subgrid scale numerical strategy are outlined and its benefits when compared to the Galerkin approach are described. As numerical examples, the aerodynamic noise generated by flow past a two-dimensional cylinder and by flow past two cylinders in parallel arrangement are addressed.
