It is well known that local soil conditions play a key role in the amplification of earthquake waves. In particular, a liquefiable shallow soil layer may produce a significant influence on ground motion during strong earthquakes. In this paper, the response of a liquefiable site during the 1995 Kobe earthquake is studied using vertical array records, with particular attention on the effects of nonlinear soil behaviour and liquefaction on the ground motion. Variations of the characteristics of the recorded ground motions are analysed using the spectral ratio technique, and the nonlinearity occurring in the shallow liquefied layer during earthquake is identified. A fully coupled, inelastic finite element analysis of the response of the array site is performed. The calculated stress–strain histories of soils and excess pore water pressures at different depths are presented, and their relations to the characteristics of the ground motions are addressed.

A procedure is presented to extend the static torsional provisions of the Eurocode 8 (EC8) to asymmetrical multi-storey buildings. It is shown that even if the conditions in Annex A of EC8 are satisfied, the static torsional provision will not be effective to compensate for the effect of torsion unless the building possesses a minimum level of torsional stiffness. By means of examples, it is shown that this minimum torsional stiffness condition can be specified in the Code using the mean stiffness radius of gyration of the building calculated based on the proposed procedure as an index.

Earthquakes and microtremor records are used for estimating the site response of hard rock sites comprising four three-component seismic stations which operate as part of the Israel Seismic Network. The response functions are determined by implementing the horizontal-to-vertical component spectral ratio of earthquake shear-waves (receiver function estimates) and microtremors (Nakamura's estimate) observed simultaneously at the site. The sites of seismic stations ATZ (Mt. Atzmon), MBH (Mt. Berech) and MRNI (Mt. Meron) exhibit amplification attributed to topography effects. At ATZ, within the 1.3–2.0 Hz range, the amplification is in the order of factor 4. At MBH amplification levels of 3.0–3.5 are observed in the frequency range 1.5–4.0 Hz. Station MRNI exhibits a relatively strong amplification effect (up to 4) in the frequency range of about 2.5 to 3.5 Hz. Slight amplification around 5 Hz is observed at ATR (the proposed site for a nuclear power plant). These effects were correlated with the thickness of the weathered layer above unweathered chalk. A comparison between the amplification factor observed during earthquakes and those inferred from microtremors shows that these are, in general, in agreement. However, details of the spectral ratios from different microtremor recordings are not exactly the same. Differences appear mainly in the frequency at which the maximum amplification occurs. These observations demonstrate the usefulness of non-reference technique in estimating the topographical effects of ground shaking. These methods may be used in the process of seismic hazard assessment for ridges and mountain tops, common sites for settlements, communication relay stations, bridges, rope-drive and power transmission towers.

The dynamic finite element equations of a two-dimensional structure made of axial-flexural frame elements with tendon-driven actuators have been derived. A critical review of classical optimal control theory is made with respect to its application to the control of structure under seismic excitations. Seven control algorithms, including two newly proposed algorithms, have been described, investigated and discussed. The need of an optimal observer, Kalman filter, is discussed. The validity of separation theorem applicable to the optimal stochastic control of structure for earthquake resistance is shown. How the control system perform under the circumstances of actuator saturation is also shown. Several numerical examples are worked out to demonstrate and compare the efficiency and limitations of those control algorithms.

In this article, H/V ratio are evaluated using different spectral techiniques applied to both earthquake and microtremor data (Nakamura technique). In particular, in order to avoid numerical instability, two different numerical techiniques are taken into account: (a) a smoothing procedure applied to the spectra of the seismogram components and (b) a regularization method applied to the H/V ratio (Landweber scheme). The data set consists of more than 70 earthquake events recorded by three component sensors displaced in the town of Fabriano (Central Italy) during the Umbria-Marche sequence started on September 1997. The local magnitudes range between 2.7 and 4.4, while the epicentral distances range between nearly 30 and 60 km. The stations were set to continuous recording so that a huge amount of microtremors was stored. The results are compared in terms of predominant frequencies and amplification levels in order to point out the influence of the adopted methods. The H/V ratio provides similar results if applied to a smoothed version of both earthquake and microtremor spectra, confirming that Nakamura technique is a cheap and a fast method to collect information on the site amplification effects. Moreover, the results relevant to earthquake data seem not to depend on the method used to stabilize the H/V ratio, whereas those relevant to microtremor data does. The explanation of this fact is suggested by the behaviour of the Landweber filter showing that the predominant frequency detected by means of microtremor data lies in a high instability region of the spectra.

The objective of the present work is to present a methodology for the identification of relevant limit states, namely ultimate limit states leading to structural collapse, and for the assessment of design q factors (or force reduction factors) for reinforced concrete structures under seismic loading. It follows a probabilistic approach based on damage indices. The utilised nonlinear models, as well as the damage indices, which are those proposed by Miner and by Park and Ang, are described. The methodology of analysis is presented emphasising its probabilistic characteristics. Some parametric studies are carried out, including the analysis of one regular plane frame reinforced concrete structure, designed for three different ductility classes (those proposed by Eurocode 8) and assuming different q factors in design. Results show how the chosen damage indices can be used as parameters to characterise the structural response and how the proposed methodology can be used to assess the design q factors. It is also shown that, for moderate seismic input, the three ductility classes are essentially equivalent in terms of maximum damage indices, but that for higher seismic levels the differences are evident, justifying the use of different q factors.
