A micromechanical damage model for the finite element modelling of historical masonry structures is presented in this article. Masonry is considered as a composite medium made up of a periodic assembly of blocks connected by orthogonal bed and head mortar joints. The constitutive equations, in plane stress, are based on the homogenisation theory and they consider the non linear stress-strain relationship in terms of mean stress and mean strain. Different in-plane damage mechanisms, involving both mortar and blocks, are considered and the damage process is governed by evolution laws based on an energetic approach derived from Fracture Mechanics and on a non-associated Coulomb friction law. The failure domain of the model is analysed both in the equivalent stress and in the principal stress space considering different orientations of the bed joints relative to the loading direction. A comparison with experimental results is provided. A numerical simulation of masonry walls subjected to horizontal forces proportional to their own weight is shown in order to discuss the model's capability of describing the influence of the masonry microstructure on its mechanical behaviour.

The goal of this research is to study the effect of cable vibration through a number of control cases of a cable-stayed bridge. In order to consider the complicated dynamic behaviour of the full-scale bridge, a three-dimensional numerical model of the MATLAB-based analysis tool has been developed by the complete simulation of the Gi-Lu bridge. The dynamic characteristics of cables in the cable-stayed bridge are verified between the field experiment and the result from numerical simulation using geometrically nonlinear beam elements in MATLAB program. Three types of control devices are selected to reduce the response of the bridge deck which includes: actuators, viscous-elastic dampers with large capacity, and base isolations. Moreover, two types of control devices, MR dampers and viscous dampers, are installed either between the deck and cables and/or between two neighbouring cables for controlling the cable vibration. A modified bi-viscous model combined with convergent rules is used to describe the behaviour of MR dampers. Finally, through evaluation criteria the control effectiveness on the cable-stayed bridge using different control strategies is examined.

In civil engineering, structural integrity and safety are of utmost importance as the consequences of failure are devastating. Maintaining the structural integrity becomes particularly important when the structures are subjected to severe earthquakes and strong wind-loading. Various passive and active control means have been considered to avoid catastrophic failure due to seismic or wind excitations. In this paper, a new class of hybrid actuators is presented which consists of a piezoelectric stack actuator combined with a viscoelastic damper to form a passive/active brace system (PAB). The actuator is used for mitigating structural dynamic responses of a three-storey structure subjected to simulated earthquakes loading. The proposed hybrid actuator is selected because it combines the attractive attributes of active and passive systems as well as because it has high stiffness-weight ratio, high frequency bandwidth, and low power consumption.

The theoretical and experimental performance characteristics of the three-storey structure with the hybrid PAB actuator are presented. Comparisons are also included when the structure is controlled with conventional viscoelastic dampers or conventional active control braces that operate without any viscoelastic damping. These comparisons emphasize the effectiveness of the hybrid actuator in damping out simulated seismic vibrations.

Based on traditionally accepted hypothesis and verified by existing data, an expression is derived to calculate response spectrum at the ground surface if the response spectrum at the basement rock is known. The fundamental assumptions are with regards to the form of variation of the exceedance rates of spectral accelerations in the basement rock, and based also on the usual (lognormal) distribution forms of the uncertainties associated with the spectral amplification function. The resulting approach multiplies the mean of the amplification function in order to consider in a rigorous way its uncertainty.

The objective of this paper is to obtain the optimum design of 3D reinforced concrete buildings in terms of their performance under earthquake loading. This goal is achieved by considering the minimisation of the eccentricity between the mass centre and the rigidity centre of each storey layout as the optimisation objective in order to produce torsionally balanced structures. This problem is considered as a combined topology and sizing optimisation problem. The location and the size of the columns and the shear walls of the structure of each storey layout constitute the design variables. Apart from the constraints imposed by the seismic and reinforced concrete structure design codes, architectural restrictions are also taken into account. The test examples showed that a reduction in the structural cost of the building is achieved by minimising the eccentricity between the mass centre and the rigidity centre of each storey layout. Evolutionary optimisation algorithms and in particular a specially tailored algorithm based on Evolution Strategies is implemented for the solution of this type of structural optimisation problems.

A wavelet-based procedure is presented for the determination of site frequencies from the analysis of historic earthquake accelerograms recorded at the surface. The acceleration time histories are analysed with continuous wavelet transform and the complex Morlet wavelet is used for this purpose. The procedure, which is based on a zoom-in of the wavelet map after the strong motion part of the earthquake fades away, is able to identify the first natural frequency of a layered soil deposit (and in a few occasions also the second frequency). A methodology to calibrate the model of the soil profile with the identified site frequency is also presented. The thickness of a layer that extends from the last known layer to the bedrock is determined such that the fundamental frequency of the new soil system equals the measured value. The proposed procedures are illustrated with numerical examples and applications to real data.

This paper studies the effects of soil layering in the basin based on the characteristics of basin-edge induced surface waves and associated differential ground motion. Seismic responses of various basin-edge models were simulated using software based on parsimonious finite difference staggered grid approximation of 2.5D elastodynamic wave equation. Seismic responses of various models with different number of soil/soft rock layers but for a fixed thickness of deposit, fundamental frequency and impedance contrast revealed a decrease of surface wave amplitude with an increase in the number of layers in the basin. Shifting of dominant frequency towards the higher values was obtained with an increase of number of layers. An increase of dispersion of surface waves with an increase of number of soil layers in the basin was observed. A minor increase of Rayleigh wave velocity with an increase of number of soil layers was also obtained, but in the case of Love wave it was almost negligible.

Spectral analysis of the edge-induced surface waves revealed that the anomalous earthquake intensity may arise in a zone of width of 2.5–3.0 km, parallel to basin-edge and at an offset of 0.5–0.7 km from the edge. Maximum horizontal differential ground motion (HDGM) developed by Love wave (≈ 4.9 × 10^-2) was more than that of Rayleigh wave (≈ 9.4 × 10^-3). Large variation in HDGM caused by the surface waves was obtained with a change in the number of layers in the basin and maximum HDGM was observed when there were only two layers in the basin. It was inferred that the effect of soil layering in the basin was more on the Rayleigh wave as compared to the Love wave. Development of large HDGM near the basin-edge and its dependency on the number of soil layers reveals that basin-edge induced surface waves need special attention during seismic microzonation or seismic hazard prediction.
