This study adopts a random procedure in the evaluation of the effect of the rotational component of earthquake on the accidental eccentricity of symmetric and asymmetric buildings. The spectral density function of the rotational component of earthquake acceleration (about the vertical axis) is obtained on the basis of the spectral density function of the horizontal component of earthquake acceleration. The rotational component of an earthquake can increase the response of the structure. The degree of the increase is highly dependent upon the dynamic characteristics of the system and the rotational component of the earthquake. To bring this increase under consideration, seismic codes represent a parameter referred to as accidental eccentricity, as a part of the design eccentricity. The purpose of the present study is to estimate the value of this increase and to make appropriate suggestions based on frequency domain analysis.

Computational simulations are presented for a unique series of centrifuge tests conducted to assess the performance of liquefaction countermeasure techniques. In these centrifuge tests, the dynamic response of an embankment supported on a liquefiable foundation (medium sand) is investigated. The experimental series included: (i) a benchmark test without a liquefaction countermeasure, (ii) foundation densification below the embankment toe, and (iii) use of a sheet-pile containment enclosure below the embankment. This series of experiments documents a wide range of practical liquefaction response mechanisms (including countermeasure implementation). In order to numerically simulate the above centrifuge tests, a new calibrated soil stress-strain constitutive model is incorporated into a two-phase (solid-fluid) fully coupled Finite Element formulation. Comparison of the computational and experimental results demonstrates: (i) importance of post-liquefaction dilative soil behavior in dictating the dynamic response and deformation characteristics of the embankment-foundation system, and (ii) capabilities and limitations of the numerical modeling procedure.

This paper describes the numerical simulation of the seismic behaviour of a mock-up of a six-floor building, constituted by two parallel R/C walls and experimentally tested on a shaking table. Within the scope of an international benchmark the mock-up was submitted to three earthquakes with intensities up to 0.71g, which induced nonlinear behaviour in the concrete and reinforcement. For the numerical simulations concrete is discretised with 2D finite elements, and its behaviour reproduced via a constitutive model with two scalar damage variables. Steel rebars are discretised with 2-noded truss elements, and their constitutive behaviour under cyclic conditions reproduced by the Menegotto–Pinto model. Specific attention is devoted to Rayleigh damping, focusing on two different strategies: (i) disregarding the damping contribution, or (ii) adopting a damping matrix that takes into account the stiffness changes during the nonlinear analyses. Main results and strategies for simulating the benchmark are presented, with emphasis on the comparison between the numerical and the experimental results, which show good agreement when the damping contribution is neglected.

The applicability of a new, fully probabilistic approach to seismic design and assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is investigated. Fundamental advantages of the method are mathematical simplicity and comparatively light computational effort. The original formulation, which was developed for steel structures, is first illustrated; an extension which allows consideration of multiple failure mechanisms, typical of RC structures, is then proposed. The applicability of the method is demonstrated through an example: the seismic risk of a four storey RC building that was not designed for seismic resistance is evaluated. Three failure mechanisms are considered: joint failure, column shear failure and drift failure.

This paper presents the results of a comprehensive comparison study between the analytically predicted and experimentally identified dynamics of the shaking table system built recently in the Structural Engineering Laboratory at Rice University in Houston, Texas. The primary objectives of the research presented here are two-fold: (1) to shed light into the dynamic performance of a small-to-medium size, uni-axial, servo-hydraulic, displacement-controlled shaking table system, and (2) to validate a linearised dynamic model of the system (in the form of the total shaking table transfer function) developed earlier by the authors from basic principles. The analytical model incorporates the inherent dynamic characteristics of the various components of the shaking table system (i.e. controller, servovalve, actuator, test specimen, and reaction mass) and their dynamic interaction.

The test-analysis correlation study performed over a wide range of operating and payload conditions provides useful information on the sensitivity of the shaking table transfer function to control gain parameters and how it can be used to tune the shaking table controller for optimum performance under various payload conditions. The good test-analysis correlation results obtained validate the analytical shaking table model, show its robustness, and provide keen insight into the underlying coupled dynamics of a shaking table system. In order to achieve this good test-analysis correlation, it was crucial to include a time delay in the analytical model of the shaking table system (innovative feature of the model to account for the time lag in the response of the servovalve-actuator system). The expected significant dynamic interaction between payload and shaking table is also confirmed by this study.

This paper presents the concept of constant strength design spectra for the design of base-isolated structures; particularly those structures using isolators with a bilinear hysteretic behaviour when subjected to dynamic loading. The constant strength design spectra relate peak accelerations, velocities, displacements and effective isolated natural periods for bilinear systems with a given yield strength and post yield stiffness. Constant strength design spectra could be useful for the design of base isolators with bilinear hysteretic behaviour, as these devices can be designed for fixed yield strength and post yield stiffness. The concept of constant strength design spectra and its application for the design of base isolated structures is illustrated with case studies of specific structures.
