In 1852, six Brothers of the Christian Schools, following in the tradition of their founder St. John Baptist de La Salle, gave up all they had and travelled to the Far East to bring education to the poor. They landed in Singapore and established the second school of the La Salle Brothers in this region. Their unparalleled approach to education saw an astronomical rise in student numbers and reputation. For years, St. Joseph's Institution has been an icon of Singapore's history, grooming many of its leaders.
An earlier book Men for Others by Warren Fernandez celebrates the first generation of post-independence leaders. In the same spirit, this edition honours some of those who have taken on the mantle of service leadership for the next generation of Singaporeans. Inspiring alumni featured in this edition include Gerard Ee, Justice Chan Seng Onn, Teo Hock Seng, and Peter Seah. This book commemorates the 165th anniversary of the Christian Brothers in Singapore by showing that the mission of those first Brothers is well alive, 165 years on.

“They could’ve suspended or caned all of us but they didn’t, they tried to understand what exactly the issue was and how they could actually get us to cooperate with the teachers, and that kind of thing… I really appreciated that about SJI.” Hailing from the class of 1977, Gerard Ee has transitioned from the rebellious and playful teenager during his time in SJI to become a veteran social worker with an important mission — to help low-income families break out of the poverty cycle. Gerard recalls SJI, speaking with nostalgia about the times when he got into trouble as well as the times when he ate at the stall across the road with friends from different classes and levels. Describing it as a school “that brought everyone together”, Gerard is proud of his Josephian heritage. So, I went on a trip with my family to visit them and see where my donations were going. It was a surprise when I saw so many people crammed in one house. Many people were homeless. So, I decided I needed to do something for them. So, I decided to make a U-turn. I had been running hotels, living the good life. I decided to sell all my stuff and change my fate by committing full time to this cause”…

Friar John-Paul Tan is the Chancellor of the Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore. He is responsible for the Chancery, which is an arm of the Archbishop’s offices — collectively known as the Curia — that handles administrative functions such as HR, clergy matters and records management and archives. While this may sound bureaucratic, the focus of the Chancery is keenly pastoral. The primary responsibility of the Chancery is to help the Archdiocese in its administrative functions and governance, and to preserve and safeguard documents for the Church’s future. When Archbishop Emeritus Nicholas Chia retired in 2013, his successor, Archbishop William Goh, appointed Franciscan Friar John-Paul Tan, as the Chancellor, a role mandated by canon 482 of the Code of Canon Law. The good friar was well positioned for the role given his extensive experience as Parish Priest of St. Mary of the Angels, Defender of the Bond for the Ecclesiastical Tribunal and as Guardian (Superior) of the Franciscan Houses.
