Tugrul U Daim is a Professor and the Director of the Technology Management Doctoral Program in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science at Portland State University (PSU), USA. He is also the Director of the Research Group on Infrastructure and Technology Management, and a Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Solutions.
His research has been funded by the US Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, National Cooperative Highway Research Program, and many other regional, national and international organizations. He has published over 200 refereed papers in journals and conference proceedings,and edited more than 20 books and conference proceedings. He has overseen 11 PhD graduates who are now in leading positions in government, industry and academia.
He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Innovation and Technology Management and International Journal of Energy Technology and Policy. He is also an Associate Editor for Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Technology in Society, Foresight, Journal of Knowledge Economy and the International Journal of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Tugrul has also edited more than 20 special issues in international journals.
Prior to joining PSU, he had worked at Intel Corporation for over a decade in varying management roles. At Intel he managed product and technology development. During his tenure at PSU, he has acted as a Strategic Consultant to the Chief Technology Innovation Officer of Bonneville Power Administration, a part of US Department of Energy. Tugrul has helped develop regional and national technology roadmaps in the energy sector. He also consulted for many other international, national and regional organizations including Elsevier, Biotronik, NEEA, Energy Trust of Oregon, EPRI, ETRI, Koc Holding, Arcelik, Tofas, Ford Otosan, Kirlangic, Siemens, Mark and Spencer, and Castrol.
He is also a visiting professor with the Northern Institute of Technology at Technical University of Hamburg, Harburg, Germany. He has given keynotes and distinguished speaker lectures at conferences, companies, universities and research centers around the world including Iamot, Euromot, Samsung, Helmut Schmidt University (Germany), Kuhne Logistics University, Seoul National University (Korea), Bogazici University (Turkey), Koc University (Turkey), University of Gaziantep (Turkey), Izmir Institute of Technology (Turkey), University of Pretoria (South Africa), Tampere University of Technology (Finland), Science and Technology Institute (Korea), and the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center at UNCC (USA).
He was given the Research Publication Award by the International Association of Management of Technology (IAMOT) and Fellow Award by the Portland International Center for Management of Engineering and Technology (PICMET) both in 2014.
He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Bogazici University in Turkey, MS in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, USA, MS in Engineering Management from Portland State University, USA, and PhD in Systems Science: Engineering Management from Portland State University in Portland Oregon, USA.
Terry Oliver was Chief Technology Innovation Officer at the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), USA. Beginning in 2005, Terry led the management of BPA's US18 million annual direct investment in research, development, and demonstration, which represents approximately US60 million annually in leveraged R&D investments, and an investment nearly 5 times the average US utility. Under his leadership, BPA's Technology Innovation program has enabled breakthroughs and operational improvements in nearly every area of the agency's core businesses — marketing wholesale hydropower, operating more than 15,000 circuit miles of high-voltage transmission lines, advancing energy efficiency and integrating renewable resources. Recent successes include the use of synchrophasors for wide-area control, helical connector shunt innovation and the exploration of end-use-to-generation smart grid integration.
He serves as a member the board of directors of the GridWise Alliance, and is also a member of the International Advisory Board for the International Journal of Innovation and Technology. Terry is also part of the Management and the Advisory Council of the Engineering and Technology Management Department in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science at Portland State University, USA. In addition, he is a member of Southern California Edison's technical advisory board, Carnegie Mellon University's Electricity Industry Center advisory board, Oregon Institute of Technology's Renewable Energy Engineering Program industry advisory committee, and the technical review panel for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory Wind Program. He is a past member of the Electric Power Research Institute board.
Notably, he's championed a disciplined research management approach, including benchmarking, technology roadmapping, and effective portfolio management, which has led to an unprecedented level of success for BPA's R&D program. Terry is a Fellow with the Portland International Center for the Management of Engineering and Technology. Terry has also been the recipient of BPA's Administrator's Meritorious Service Award, the agency's highest award.
Robert Phaal joined the University of Cambridge Centre for Technology Management in 1997, where he conducts applied research in the area of strategic technology management. This work has focused on supporting companies to customize and initiate roadmapping processes. He has a mechanical engineering background, and post-graduate qualifications in applied and computational mechanics, with industrial experience in technical research, consulting and software development.
