Research and Development (R&D) has become an essential function in any organization whose competitiveness depends on technology. One of the major reasons for that is the increase in the rate of technological change. The drivers behind this change are key technologies which are shaping our industry today: information technology, nanotechnology and biotechnology. While each technology is changing the way we do business in related industries, they also impact the way we live through technological convergence. Some of the sectors which changed drastically in the recent decade include communications, entertainment, sports, transportation, photography, retail, energy and health.
Such changes impact the business world immensely, causing ‘tsunami waves’ that in turn cause established companies to crumble and new ones to emerge. We saw the end of formerly leading companies of their respective industries, such as Blockbusters, Tower Records, Polaroid and Borders; And we witnessed the emergence of the new economic leaders of the digital age — Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook. We also saw an equally dramatic political and economic change in the international arena; we saw countries such as South Korea, India and China become more competitive than previously fathomed in the early 20th Century.
This series will focus on managing R&D effectively at the company, regional, national and international levels, in many sectors; ranging from information and communications to health; and from retail to energy. The series aims to provide a platform for the timely dissemination of state-of-the-art perspectives, new findings and the latest research outcomes in research and development management to enlighten our understanding of technology management.
The topics invited include but are not limited to the following:
