This follows on from the very well-received Volume I UNIVER-CITIES: Strategic Implications for Asia — Readings from Cambridge and Berkeley to Singapore edited by Anthony SC Teo and published in 2013. The early discussions on the topic "univer-cities" sparked considerable interest, leading to the Inaugural Univer-Cities Conference 2013.
Volume II is the result of papers presented at the Inaugural Univer-Cities Conference 2013. Founded by Anthony SC Teo, the Conference was held under the auspices of Nanyang Technological University and the Lee Foundation in Singapore. The Inaugural Address was delivered by His Royal Highness Raja Dr Nazrin Shah and followed by presentations by eminent scholars and leaders of thought from universities all over the world.
Building on the foundation for further research, discussion and input from scholars worldwide and the international community, the next univer-cities conference is planned for 2016.
*His Royal Highness Raja Dr Nazrin Shah ascended the Throne as the 35th Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan on 29 May 2014.

"The role that universities have played in the economic development of cities, regions and nations has been seriously underappreciated. From their origins in the medieval centuries in Europe and the Islamic world to their centrality in the growth of entire new industries in modern times, universities have played a key part in the evolution of urban and regional economies. The beneficial effects of clustering of research and entrepreneurship around great universities has radiated outwards and profoundly affected the course of the global economy. The editors of this Univer-Cities book are to be congratulated for producing a timely and prescriptive book that should be read by all those concerned with the inter twining of centres of learning with the improvement of mankind's material and qualitative conditions."

"In our highly interconnected world, knowledge networks will play an ever-increasing role in fueling economic growth, societal development and interactions, as well as developing the engaged deep dialogues which are essential for communities around the world to understand and advance thinking on complex global issues. This is an area where Universities are uniquely placed to lead and contribute, and will be a growing part of the distinctive value that we can bring in a rapidly changing environment."

"Univer-cities are redefining the New Silk Road by posing new vistas of challenges for Asia's universities with multi-focussed approaches to the future. Interestingly, we are building upon half a millennium of West Asia-East Asia cross-links and can visualize these in Asia's emerging multimedia super-corridors."

"When Professor Teo addressed the faculty and community leaders, including Alumna Governor Esther George of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, at a UMKC dedication event, he spoke about 'Univercities' which struck a chord with us. It does take a city and its universities to reinvent the emerging Univer-City in the 21st century as with the mid America frontier hub of Kansas City founded in 1854.
Repositioned with state, city, public, civil society and a tradition of univercitizens in philanthropy from Vogel and his founding 41 acres to Hyde, Kauffman and Henry Bloch to co-create a global vibrant city with UMKC and Henry W Bloch School of Management to pioneer entrepreneurship and innovation through experiential learning, attract talent, higher value jobs, businesses, research, start-ups and a by-product — an overarching spirit evoked by the peerless Kansas City Royals in World Series 2014 versus The Giants as destiny versus dynasty."

"The big Greco-Roman books have influenced learning at universities, cities and society. With the rise of China, Confucius is now making a comeback, anecdotally a preferred undergraduate course at Harvard. 25 centuries ago, my ancestor Zengzi (曾子) transmitted the teachings of Confucius to posterity. After 75 generations, I (曾繁如) at a personal level am amping up its essence to the West in selected Univercities."
