Chapter 4: CHILE: The Context and Pedagogy of Mathematics Teaching and Learning
Chile was one of the first countries in Latin America to develop formal institutions for teacher preparation and to establish graduate programs in mathematics and mathematics education. It is now going through a difficult stage of reevaluating the neoliberal economic policies that have led to a significant experiment in the privatization of education. Currently groups of mathematicians, mathematics educators, and other stakeholders are involved in far-reaching discussions and collaborations that hold the promise of leading to more equitable high-quality educational outcomes for the Chilean people.
