Abstract:

This article describes the history of mathematics and its teaching in Paraguay, from the founding of its first universities until the present. It tells how, in spite of isolated individual efforts, the country could not adjust to the rhythm of mathematical development in the region, with the result of falling behind. It also highlights the recent but promising creation of graduate programs, as well as an incipient but cohesive mathematical research activity.
