Skin injury is a major complication during radiation therapy and is associated with oxidative damage to skin cells. An effective and safe radioprotectant to prevent this skin damage is still unavailable. The Rhodiola crenulata root extract (RCE) has been reported to be a free radical scavenger and a potent anti-oxidant in both in vitro and in vivo models. In the current study, we investigated the effects of RCE on ionizing radiation-induced skin injury and its underlying mechanisms. HaCaT cells — a non-cancerous skin cell line together with HepG2, Caco2, A549, and OECM cancer cell lines — were pre-treated with RCE for 24h followed by exposure to 15 Gy using Caesium-137 as a γ-ray source. The cell viability was measured. In HaCaT cells, oxidative stress markers, cellular apoptosis pathways, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression were studied. We found that RCE significantly protected HaCaT cells, but not cancer cells from the loss of viability induced by exposure to ionizing radiation. RCE attenuated radiation-induced oxidative stress markers, cell apoptosis, MMP levels, and expression of cytokine genes. RCE also limited the induction of p53 and p21 by radiation exposure. These findings indicate that RCE may selectively protect the skin cells from ionizing radiation without altering its ability to kill cancer cells. Therefore, we suggest that RCE or its derivatives could serve as a novel radioprotective therapy.

The High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HIγS) is a joint project between Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) and the Duke Free Electron Laser Laboratory (DFELL). This facility utilizes intra-cavity back-scattering of the FEL photons in order to produce a γ-flux enhancement of approximately 10³ over the existing sources. At present, gamma-ray beams with energies ranging from 2 to 50 MeV are available with intensities of 10⁵–10⁷ γ/s, energy spreads of 1% or better (with lower intensities), and 100% linear polarization. An upgrade is presently underway which will allow for the production of γ rays up to an energy of about 225 MeV having intensities in excess of 10⁸ γ/sec. The primary component of the upgrade is a 1.2 GeV booster-injector which will provide for efficient injection at any chosen operating energy of the storage ring from 300 MeV to 1.2 GeV. In addition, an upgrade of the present OK-4 FEL to a helical undulator system (OK-5) is underway. This new system has many advantages over the present one, including making switchable linear and circularly polarized beams available, an increase in power and a decrease in mirror-damaging radiation. The full system, including the booster injector, is expected to be ready for use by 2006. TUNL researchers, in collaboration with outside theoretical and experimental colleagues, have proposed a broad based research program in nuclear physics which is designed to exploit the unique flux, energy resolution and polarization of the HIγS beams. A description of the presently available facility and the anticipated facility following the present upgrades will be given in this review, along with a description of recent and planned experiments.

In this work, we determine the central black hole mass for a sample of blazars including 30 γ-ray loud blazars with available variability timescales. The γ-ray energy, the emission size and the property of a two-temperature accretion disk are used to determine the absorption depth. If we take the intrinsic γ-ray luminosity to be λ times the Eddington luminosity, i.e. , then we have following results: the masses of the black hole are in the range of 0.59 ~ 67.99 × 10⁷M_⊙(λ = 1.0) or 0.90 ~ 104.13 × 10⁷M_⊙(λ = 0.1). Blazars are also discussed.

Gamma radiation and ozone sensing properties of mixed oxides in the form of thermally evaporated thin films are explored. External effects, such as radiation and ozone cause defects in the materials they interact with, cause changes in the material properties. An Edwards E306A thermal coating system was used for the mixed oxides thin films deposition. Cu electrodes were manufactured on the substrate via thermal evaporation, photoresist was spin-coated over it and was exposed to UV light via acetate containing the desired inter-digitated electrode patterns. After the exposure, the substrate was placed in a developer solution and then rinsed in water and placed in the etching solution to reveal the electrode pattern. The optical properties of the films were explored using CARY 1E UV-Visible Spectrophotometer. The influence of gamma radiation on the electrical properties of the films was traced via the measurements of conductance versus radiation dose, which were recorded in real-time using HP 4277A LCZ impedance analyzer at a frequency of 1 kHz. The fact that the explored thin films were sensitive to both gamma radiation and ozone exposure enables the development of cost-effective real-time monitoring system for personnel protection and environmental monitoring. This novel approach would allow the manufacture of the sensor system with multiple sensor heads during one technological process, whereas various shielding materials or pattern recognition could be employed to differentiate between the effects of ozone and gamma radiation on the mixed oxide thin film sensors.

Two examples of the analysis of the hard X-ray/soft γ-ray emission from accreting black holes observed with the INTEGRAL satellite are presented. The first study is based on data covering 16 years of monitoring of the bright persistent Cyg X-1 system. This huge data set allowed us to get more insights into the geometry of the plasma region in different spectral states of the object. In particular, we identify two substates of the hard state and provide new information on the plasma behaviour during the jet emission. The second study is based on data taken during the 2015 outburst of transient black hole binary V404 Cygni. The results of detailed spectral analysis show that a single Componization component, purely thermal or hybrid, is not sufficient to explain the hard X-ray emission during a strong radio emission period.

We investigate the theoretical and observational implications of the acceleration of protons and heavier nuclei in supernova remnants (SNRs). By adopting a semi-analytical technique, we study the non-linear interplay among particle acceleration, magnetic field generation and shock dynamics, outlining a self-consistent scenario for the origin of the spectrum of Galactic cosmic rays as produced in this class of sources. Moreover, the inferred chemical abundances suggest nuclei heavier than Hydrogen to be relevant not only in the shock dynamics but also in the calculation of the γ-ray emission from SNRs due to the decay of neutral pions produced in nuclear interactions.
