This paper presents a switching regression model of investment decision where the probability of a firm facing financial constraint is endogenously determined. The approach, therefore, obviates the use of a priori criteria to exogenously identify the financially constrained firms, and thereby addresses the potential misclassification problem faced in the existing literature. A sample of 576 Indian manufacturing firms, collected across 15 broad industries is used for this study. The study establishes that financially constrained firms exhibit a much higher investment-cash flow sensitivity than those identified to be unconstrained. It also probes into the possible determinants of financial constraints, and finds empirical support for its hypothesis that young, liquidity constrained and low dividend payout firms are more likely to face financial constraints, when compared to their respective counterparts. This paper also provides some insight into the impact of the ongoing liberalization program on the financial constraints faced by the Indian firms.

This study evaluates the relationship between knowledge management (KM) and dynamic capabilities. This goal stems from a lack of research regarding the impact of KM on strategic organisational aspects, particularly in firms from emerging economies. Theoretically, the link between KM and dynamic capabilities (DC) is based on the knowledge-based view of the firm (KBV). This posits that knowledge, when appropriately managed, is the main source of strategic renewal for organisations. As such, hypotheses about the relationship between KM and the dimensions of DC were both formulated and tested, in 93 knowledge-intensive organisations in Colombia, using structural equation modelling. The results indicate that KM has a significant impact on dynamic capability dimensions. For practitioners, this study sheds light on the relevance of the implementation of KM initiatives, in order to activate DC in organisations.

Continued new product introduction (NPI) concerns all companies regardless if they are from advanced economies or emerging ones. Our understanding of NPI in emerging economies is still in the development phase. There is also a lack of studies of variations across sectors relating to determinants of NPI in particular. This study addresses these lacks and, drawing upon a dataset from Turkish companies, it explores whether there are differences regarding influential factors on the introduction of new products or services across sectors. Results reveal major differences with regard to human capital, social capital, and leadership capital.

Technological interventions are adopted in emerging economies to enable sustainable development and empower marginalized communities at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP). Emerging economies are becoming significant contributors in BoP development with the active initiatives from academia-driven organizations engaging in rural development. However, the technological development practice is fragmented and requires unified technology management practices to analyze salient features that lead to a sustainable rural transformation. This study adopts a case-study methodology and obtains primary and secondary data from two distinctive centers of an academia-born organization. The findings enfold three intrinsic characteristics of the technology development process targeted for the BoP sector: the emergence of demand-driven technology, inclusive innovation practices leading towards self-reliance and trends of sustainable green technology. The formative contribution of this research enriches the management of technologies at BoP by connecting the developer’s perspective for innovation practice inclined towards knowledge sharing, inclusiveness, empowerment and sustainable development, thus creating a roadmap for effective policy development focusing on the sustainability of BoP technologies in emerging economies.

Recent research has demonstrated that innovation is a factor that can add a competitive differential among small- and medium-sized enterprises. The literature presents several types of companies that have invested in the process of organizational innovation. Recently, one type of company that has drawn attention is called “graduated”, that is, one that went through the incubation process and received support from an incubator. Research shows that graduated companies (GCs) have enough competencies to develop themselves in their market. This research analyzes the level of organizational innovation in nine GCs in an emerging economy, such as Brazil. To achieve the proposed objective, this study (i) identifies the profile of these companies; (ii) identifies the proposed innovation actions; (iii) applies the innovation radar and (iv) analyzes the dimensions proposed by the innovation radar. The results revealed that the GCs are occasional innovators, with an average of 3.60. Among the nine companies analyzed, seven presented averages above 3.0, considered as occasional innovators and the other two companies, with averages a little above 2.0, were analyzed as little or not at all innovative. GCs, in their majority, are innovative companies. From the theoretical perspective, the results highlight the possibility of improvements and the suggestion of new dimensions for the innovation radar. In the practical scenario, the participating GCs were able to reflect on themes and day-to-day situations that, for lack of time, or even planning, were not analyzed.

This paper examines the impact of personal factors in the decision of small, locally-owned firms from an emerging economy to enter into exporting. It drew on the logistic regression model to analyze the probability of a firm entering into exporting given its founder/owner possesses certain personal attributes. The results reveal personal attributes such as international job experience and foreign travel experience are the most critical in determining whether or not the firm exports. These results demonstrate demographic factors such as age and education level of the owner are less important and behavioral factors are more significant. Public policymakers interested in getting more firms to export can use these results as a guide to develop training centers that will encourage specific entrepreneurial behaviors germane to export initiation in small firms.

The knowledge economy is driven by entrepreneurship, and the entrepreneurial university takes on the role of an important catalyst for regional economic and social development. Academics represent key agents of knowledge and technology transfer from university to society. Previous research suggests that academics’ successful engagement in entrepreneurial activities can positively contribute to the development of local society and economy. However, evidence on the antecedents of academic engagement and commercialisation is scarce. This study examines whether aspects related to academics’ human, physical and organisational capital resources influence their engagement in consulting, sponsored research, licensing/assignment of intellectual property (IP) and spin-off creation with industry, government and civil society. The analysis is based on a new and unique data set of 398 individual academic researchers affiliated to South African universities who were awarded a quality rating by South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF) and covers the full spectrum of academic disciplines. Data analysis employed generalised linear models (GLMs) and demonstrated that the availability of human, physical and organisational resources relate to the four entrepreneurial activities in different ways. The findings support the concept that individual factors are more significant than institutional factors in determining entrepreneurial activities. A key finding is that academics’ engagement in entrepreneurial activities is primarily influenced by their prior entrepreneurial experiences. The study provides scholars investigating academic entrepreneurship, policy makers and university administrators with the key resource drivers of entrepreneurial activities and may assist them in establishing the appropriate role of institutions and organisations in promoting entrepreneurial activities of academics.

We personally interview thirteen board members of seven (out of the ten) companies listed at the Suriname Stock Exchange and ask questions about their past and current decisions and on their risk attitudes. Next, we correlate the answers to company performance in between 2003–2011, like earnings per share, stock returns, book value and market value. Recent literature on risk attitudes in the board, which usually draws on western economies, guides our formulation of hypotheses. At the same time we also perform some exploratory analyses. Our main result is that, for this emerging economy, more risk adversity leads to better firm performance.
